I have German ancestry, too, aus Hessen.
But I'm kind of a mutt, with Dutch, English, Danish, Scottish, Irish, French . . . who knows what else?
Me too!
If you've got French in you, then you might have Cherokee too.
That's what my family discovered.
In addition, we discovered that we are French Lebanese - and probably the Irish side are Irish-Lebanese because we are also black Irish, hence our dark hair and fair complexion.

My prayers!
Do you have any oil from the shrines of the saints, like St. Nectarios or St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco?

I went to our Icon corner and looked in the altar drawer drawer, and there is a bottle of oil rom St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco!
So I brought it down to Seraphima and I did a cross on her forehead and the back of her hands with it. I'm praying to St John NOW!
Thanks, and God bless you Aria!

Why is that sad?
Do you really want me to get into politics, religion, and my philosophies on both? Suffice it to say that given the choice between an areligious 'democratic republic' and a Christian (even INO) monarchy, I'd jump at the monarchy.
Plus some of our country's current policies are reprehensible to me. I support our troops; doesn't mean I support the 'war' they're fighting.

so a friend of mine was going to give the homily at the anglican mass today and he invited us all along, so i went because i was specifically invited by a friend and it would be at least reasonably reverent. he asked me to do the epistle but i declined. i don't even remember what the gospel reading was, but the epistle was the one about preaching Christ crucified. the whole thing felt weird. later today, though, my parish is having a bbq for all those college students. doot doot. deacon dan is driving.

It was so much fun, and it was much cleaner and brighter than I expected. I never felt afraid, I was never pickpocketed. It was easy to find my way around. The Metropolitan Museum of Art was awesome. I went to see Julius Caesar on Broadway with Denzel Washington(what a hottie!!!) which was spectacular. David Letterman wasn't taping but I had my picture taken under his sign, got a Late Show t-shirt at the CBS store, and went to the Hello Deli and met the real Rupert Jee! He was very friendly and he makes great sandwiches!
The only bad thing was that we had one of my mom's friends with us who was very pushy and bossy who wanted her way all the time. She made us walk from Greenwich Village all the way to the end of Manhattan, and then around to catch the Staten Island ferry. We went to visit Ground Zero and there were people selling junk, and she actually wanted to buy something. How horrible. I was trying to find a phone book so I could call the port authority and get them hauled out of there! Grave robbers!!!

Aria,
I was going off on my job to a friend the other day while chilling in the mall. I was really steamed 'cuz I have to move my week of vacation to another week and my boss didn't seem to think twice about making me do it. So when this friend asked why I looked so upset earlier that morning I told her about what happened and she asked about my iconography and financial aspects of it and then said to me "You really have to love what you are doing to continue doing it much longer (in light of your growing career in iconography)." It really got me thinking yesterday.

Thank you, Kolya! I am actually very excited about this. I need to get back in contact with Oberlin college to discuss my teaching the much more indepth class on iconography that will involve the actual writing of an icon this winter at Oberlin. My priest and I are talking about me teaching this same class in the evenings at my parish and it being open to all Orthodox Christians. The priest who chrismated me thinks I should charge the people who attend a nominal fee so that they have something invested in the class.

There have been some iconographers who offer summer workshops for children or adults and they also charge a fee. However, the fee is usually charged by the church and then a stipend is given to the iconographer. The fee covers the luncheon also. These seminars are very popular. With limited seating, the tickets sell out quickly.

This class will not actually be about teaching people to write icons. If I were teaching someone to write an icon they would pay me very well for that. This class is more my explaining the meaning of iconography.

ROFL indeed. When I was growing up, my home was party central so there was always something going on. When you can fall asleep on the floor with loud music, flashing lights, laughter and people dancing, you can fall asleep most anywhere. Unlike my MIL. If you go to the bathroom during the night, she will sigh exasperatedly in the other room then complain the next morning how she didn't sleep well.

Hey there, folks. How are things going wherever you are?
A couple things for me:
1.) I started learning Byzantine chant last night at Late Vocations. Wow, is it a LOT easier than Obikhod! That's not to say that it's necessarily better, but it's very different and a whole lot easier. I really like not having to shoehorn the text to fit the melody.
2.) Could you pray for Marlene and I? There are some issues going on in both our lives that we need prayer for. Thanks.

Alcoholism runs pretty deep on my father's side of the family. I guess it sort of goes with being Irish.
I'm always careful when I drink. I haven't been drunk since 9th grade.
Yes, but you can develop a problem very gradually and not even realize that you are becoming an alcoholic. My mother was like that. I don't drink because both of my parents were alcoholics, and both of my brothers have had a drinking problem as well (one hasn't had a drink in about 15 years, but the other is still an alcoholic). Both me and my priest have decided it is not a good idea for me to start drinking. With both parents having been alcoholics, my chance of becoming an alcoholic if I started drinking is about 80%. To me, it ain't worth it.

That's me as well. My sister isn't an alcoholic but she's marrying into a big Yankee family that drinks like fish. Combined with my family's susceptibility to alcoholism on our mother's side, this doesn't bode well for her and I'm hoping she won't have to learn the hard way. I should take a picture of their recycling bin and post it here, y'all would not believe the stack of liquor bottles...
Ironically, my grandfather on my father's side was killed in a drunk driving accident many years ago, back when it wasn't really considered much of a crime. Our family was lucky--the guy spent one year in jail for killing my grandfather.

I'm taking some kids from my high school and we are on one of those package tours. It will be fun- I won't have to do much thinking, but nothing is gonna be exactly first-class.

Here's dictionary.com's answer:
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=yankee
The one I used is #2, the European one is #3. Two is better than three so I win. :D
From Wikipedia:
To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is an Easterner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.
—(an old definition)
"It is used by people from other countries as slang to mean Americans, both as a term of endearment and as an insult. Hence, the term has had various positive, negative, contextual and regional associations over the years, as books, media, troops, teams, and peoples have used it differently for different purposes."

Don't laugh, I took a bus in France and it was actually nice... saw more of the countryside than on the train (speedy trains go too fast for you to see much of anything!), and the bus driver handled my 70 pounds of luggage for me instead of me having to stow it myself in the train's overhead compartment. So you and the young'uns might enjoy the bus better than you would the train.

However, the Irish in particular have a tendency to blackout with amnesia when they get in a drunken stupor. One Irish drunk raped a women and claimed amnesia, but the judge didn't buy it.

Hey, I'm Irish and I have blacked out when eating barley. No fooling.
About 20 years ago, while I was shopping, I ate one of those Tiger Milk bars that contain barley malt. I left and went home. Then I realized that I had missed my doctor's appointment. So I called the doctor and he said that I had just been there an hour ago and that if I would check my purse, I'd find a prescription inside it.
Well, I found the prescription, but to this day, I don't remember a thing about going to the doctors, who drove me, or if I drove myself, or how I got home. Nada.
When the allergist checked me for barley, I again experienced temporary amnesia.
So I avoid it.

At first I thought that I was passing by a bakery with the strong smell of yeast, then I started coughing and my husband pointed out the breweries. You can smell them for miles sometimes. I am so thankful that I don't live next to one of those, as I would probably act spacy all the time.

I have a massive problem with my fingers swelling during DL (I have bad circulation to begin with). I don't eat much salt at all so that's not it... but standing with my hands down so long... I end up having to move my ring to my little finger toward the end. :( Other times it's almost too loose...

Since you're speaking of Eire, I've got somethign I've been dying to tell you when you got back. I ran an idea past my priest (who's Irish himself), and he gave me some info and liturgics on it, after approving it. He thinks it's OK for me to write an Akathist to St. Patrick!!! Woot!

In IC XC,
Marjorie
To be honest Marjorie, I'm not really sure. From all my studying, I am GUESSING (not certain, just guessing) that the early Irish church probably kept the word Theotokos, just as we seem to do. I am guessing that a good reason for that would be that a similar word in Irish would have serious pagan connotations that would be impossible to overcome later....I'm not a linguistics major, or a serious scholar, but I know the history and the literary language of my people very well...the word for all that would sort blend into "Dana" who was goddess of my people....the Tuatha de Dannan were "the gods" who were her children.... in the words of Aunt Voula: That why that no work!
The word: a Mháthair Dé (I had to copy it and paste from an Irish an Gaelic RC site to make sure it was right) means: mother of God. All perfectly well. BUT, in the ancient world this would have been immediately understood to be Dana, the goddess, especially by illiterate peasants ^_^ That's why I tend to think that St. Patrick, Columba, Brigid, all these wonderful folks probably just used the "Theotokos" in public, although they might have used the Irish word in private...Another reason I think this is because St. Patrick's Dictum pretty much ordered everyone to use the Greek of Kyrie Eleison!:
"As recorded in Tírecháns Brief Account.
I had the fear of God as my guide through Gaul and Italy and the islands in the Tyrrhene Sea.
You have gone from this world to paradise, thanks be to God.
Church of the Irish, or rather of the Romans! In order that you may be Christians like the Romans, you must chant in your churches at every hour of prayer that commendable utterance: "Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison." Let every church that follows me sing "Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison." Thanks be to God. "
..I think it "works" in the RC rite in Ireland now, only because of 1000+ years remove from their pagan roots.

I will send you a copy when I'm done. In fact, I'll get you a copy of what I have so far, even though it's still rough and unedited and nowhere close to being finished. I might consider another one, though this Akathist will probably take a good long time.
And you put the tish marks on the vowels like this:
á = Alt + 0225
é = Alt + 0233
í = Alt + 0237
ó = Alt + 0243
ú = Alt + 0250
You have to use the number pad to put in the numbers, but it's relatively easy once you figure out how to do it. You could also use the Character Map to insert them, too.
You know one more thing that awesome? The Priest who I mentioned (a Hieromonk, actually) said that if he wanted to, he has an ancestral right to the See of Armagh! He essentially said that if he sets foot on Irish soil and wishes the see, the sitting RC Bishop is obligated to give it up. Now, I'm not sure if I heard him right, but I know that in the early Irish Church, sees were generally passed along clan lines, especially since many members of a clan would join monasteries, so his claim could be true.
Well, back to work.

Thanks so much for everything Philip!!!! I appreciate this very much and will print it out.
This is, believe it or not, quite right, although the problem there would be this: the See of Armagh has been in the political hands of Protestants for so long, that I'm not sure Fr. would want it back...LOL Also the "Historical Register" would get involved and then its Vogons everywhere...but according to ancient law, he's quite right. Tell him you have another friend with a claim (spurious as it may be!) to Iona (although I think the Scots would not even entertain the argument and would likely want to beat me up...) LOL

I know, but could you imagine how freakin' awesome it would be to have an Orthodox Bishop sitting in the Throne of St. Patrick again? Fr. Patrick (yup, Vladyka KYRILL named him Patrick) has already thought up a Tropar to the New Martyrs and Confessors of Ireland that would surely spring up if Orthodoxy started to return in force. I love that priest. He's even got a Shilleleaugh, and he's threatened me with it a couple of times!

Apparently St. Photios was a simple man who couldn't understand the arguments presented to him.
BTW, I think the argument that TtLF is making is that since the Son has His source in the Father, the Spirit having His source from the Father and the Son is the same as saying the Spirit has his source in the Father alone. Of course, she'd rather just call you ignorant, and quote web pages with her size 400 font.

Yeah, I learned that lesson big time. Just because someone tells you he/she is Orthodox doesn't make them Orthodox. Orthodoxy is not about hating other religions, or about hating people who have wronged you. Orthodoxy is about embracing God and letting his love consume your life. Orthodox is also not something that one can become overnight, it is rather something that you must grow in learning and living. Beware of those who are more Orthodox than everyone else, they are usually hiding something.

And down the road you'll realize that what you then considered bad, wasn't so bad at all... and we all learn both good and bad from our experiences. Probably the most important thing about a relationship (after we get over the hurt and issues) is how we ourself grow and learn about ourselves from the relationship. Hey, in my area there is a large number of a sect off the Lutheran church. Other "hotspots" for this church is in Minnesota, Dakotas, etc. It is a very Scandanavian-centric, family-centric, insulated church. They have huge families and it seems most of the clans in my area are inter-related. They have these yearly "meetings" , the location alternates and the youth are encouraged to attend to meet youth from other areas of the country...mix up the DNA a bit.

No, the 80s hair band CINDERELLA had a song "don't know what you got until it's gone."
I can’t tell ya baby what went wrong
I can’t make you feel what you felt so long ago
I’ll let it show
I can’t give you back what’s been hurt
Heartaches come and go and all that’s left are the words
I can’t let go
If we take some time to think it over baby
Take some time, let me know
If you really want to go
Don’t know what you got till it’s gone
Don’t know what it is I did so wrong
Now I know what I got
It’s just this song
And it ain’t easy to get back
Takes so long
I can’t feel the things that cause you pain
I can’t clear my heart of your love it falls like rain
Ain’t the same
I hear you calling far away
Tearing through my soul I just can’t take another day
Who’s to blame
If we take some time to think it over baby
Take some time let me know
If you really wanna go
Don’t know what you got till it’s gone
Don’t know what it is I did so wrong
Now I know what I got
It’s just this song
And it ain’t easy to get back
Takes so long
Do you wanna see me beggin’ baby
Can’t you give me just one more day
Can’t you see my heart’s been draggin’ lately
I’ve been lookin’ for the words to say
Don’t know what you got till it’s gone
Don’t know what it is I did so wrong
Now I know what I got
It’s just this song
And it ain’t easy to get back
Takes so long
Don’t know what you got till it’s gone no
Don’t know what it is I did so wrong
Now I know what I got
It’s just this song
And it ain’t easy to get back
Takes so long

Wow, I used to LOVE Cinderella. I saw them in concert too. They were opening (along with Warrent) for KISS.

That's how I pretty much feel about it too. I do still like a little bit of it though....It makes me nostalgic. I'm kind of more stuck in the 90s era though.

Very true. Unfortunately I have a way of not listening to my intuition. I've put myself through some very hard times, knowing full well beforehand where the road would lead. But I did learn from it.
Don't we all... esp in our know-it-all early age :D ! Man I knew more than anyone could possibly fathom. Now I've realized my own mortality and the fact that the bird next door probably knows more than I do...
