I'm still thinking about changing my name. There are sooo many Govt depts and Banks and Driver's licence etc to change.

Morning Everyone

And good night to those going to bed now.

Kolya

I figured that since I still have to fork over half an arm to get all changed (green cards, passports, drivers licenses etc in TWO countries) I could as well do it.

Ok, I'm out of here for today... going to the spa (present to myself for graduation and relaxation after my parents left) ;)

Hi everyone!

Just felt the need to tell y'all that isn't not yet noon in the "rainy" NW and it's above 80 degrees out! We're supposed to reach 90 today. There's a hot dry east wind blowing down the Columbia River Gorge. (in western OR & SW WA, the east wind means hot/dry in summer, cold/icy in winter). And by Monday, we'll be back to cloudy and in the 60's. :)

So tomorrow AM I'll be helping my grandpa plant beans. He's been anxious to get his garden started, it's been raining here for weeks.

OK, weather report over!

I've been doing fairly well myself. I might actually be staying in North Carolina for a few weeks/months, so I'm looking for a parish there right now. No OCA parish is very close, the GOAA parish has pews  , so I am looking at an Antiochian parish right now.

Seraphima thinks that's brilliant. She had an Indian Gent on the line just now, who told her he had been speaking to a guy in the office called "Mohammed", And M had been giving the client a hard time. So the Gent tells Seraphima in his Lilting Indian accent, " I told him, 'You know what, you must go to Mosque to pray!'"
At this Seraphima just cracked up laughing, and said she wished she could tell them that sometimes. The Gent replies "You'll lose your job!"

Oh well, the joys of living!!;)

US Airways stinks. I didn't even fly, and they managed to lose my luggage!

I should be out of town right now, but instead I'm back in my hizzy hanging out with my house-sitter until tomorrow morning.

I was supposed to leave today on a short trip, but stupid US Airways decided to not let me on my flight because they didn't think I could have made my connecting flight (as it turned out, I could have). They were supposed to stop my luggage and send it home with me tonight, but it got sent on.

Idiots. I have a spare shirt and skirt, but only grubby shoes to wear to a special occasion tomorrow. :sigh:

mysteries are cool. what isn't cool is that i was supposed to see the place i'd be subletting for two months this summer, but the person who owned the place wasn't in. but i got to meet the guy i'd be subletting it from, he seemed hip and things work. but the inside of the place, still shrouded in mystery...

the good news is i'll be at my parish back home for a week, two straight sundays, before i come back here to work in said sublet. doot doot. i prefer it here, but it'll be good to have a change-of-pace.

Can allergies turn into a cold?

Yip! Allergies can weaken your immune system so you might come down with a cold more frequently.

Sometimes allergies can mimic a cold. So, a particularly bad allergy season (lots of pollen ) can give you a sore throad, low grade fever, and lots of mucus flowing from your nose -- but it could just be allergies. It has happened to me.

Hope this helps.

Since I have been taking MSM, my allergy symptoms are almost nil.

But I also did the following -

I got rid of household chemicals
started to read labels before eating anything,
try to eat only organic foods,
and have basically adopted a vegetarian diet (except for yogurt and feta cheese).

My allergies diminished rather quickly once I gave up meat, chicken, eggs, and milk. I guess I have a lactose intolerance.

Happy 4000 Michael! Keep 'em comin'.

How are you today?

I am growing. And as always, with growth there is always pain. But, it is good pain. Happy pain as Fr. Basil S. calls it. And, my icon order backlog keeps growing, which is a good thing. I have learned alot in the past month and hopefully those things that my mind has learned my soul will soon learn.

I got rid of household chemicals
started to read labels before eating anything,
try to eat only organic foods,
and have basically adopted a vegetarian diet (except for yogurt and feta cheese).
My allergies diminished rather quickly once I gave up meat, chicken, eggs, and milk. I guess I have a lactose intolerance.

*ufonium looks at her swelled sinuses and red nose, then at the refrigerator full of inorganic meaty goodness*

I think I'll have to take allergies over organic vegetarianism. It's like I don't see the point of excercising three hours a week in order to prolong your life by a year or two. Were you really living those thousands of hours you spent on the treadmill anyway? Seems to me it evens out. Anyway, I'm allergic to potatoes and mushrooms, so vegetarianism is no fun at all for me.

I don't do treadmills - I'm not a rodent in a cage. :D

My exercise is walking to my classes at the university while some students ride on skate boards, skooters and electric wheelchairs.

I'm also allergic to mushrooms as well as penicillin (the two are related -both are fungi). Yes, and potatoes tend to have fungi attached as they are in the ground. ugh.

I just eat to live.... boy do I crave eggs and things made with eggs. My son makes a mean New York Cheesecake and I cannot even have a spoonful to taste.

It is teaching me temperance though.

What icons do you have in the works? Are you going to show us your latest ones?

My backlog includes the following icons:

1. The Lifegiving Tree
2. Christ Pantocrator
3. Rublev's Trinity
4. St. Matrona of Chios
5. St. Boniface Enlightener of Germany
6. St. Basil Fool for Christ
7. St. Xenia of St. Petersburg
8. St. Maximos the Hut Burner
9. The Theotokos of the Inexhaustible Cup
10. A personal icon, for my own veneration of (St.) Fr. John Kaiser, MHM, Martyr and Apostle to Kenya (Please, I don't want any arguments on the canonicity of this icon, it is for my own veneration.)

You will get to see new icons as they are completed. Almost all of these icons will have prints available through Come And See Icons. There is one one that I am not making prints of (other than the icon of Fr. John).

Thank you Rob! Actually, it's all downhill from last Friday.

I have two jobs at my school: teaching Spanish in the morning and doing admin work in the afternoon. My main admin job has been preparing the school for a visit by the accreditation team. I've been stewing over this for the past ten months. If we didn't pass this preliminary visit, which was Friday, our students' credits wouldn't count at state colleges, other schools, etc. It was a Big Hairy Deal. So guess what? They came Friday, took a look around and said "Excellent!" and said we will pass.

Now that THAT's over with, the rest of the week is a piece of cake!!!

Good evening, everyone!

Dear brothers and sisters from TAW,

As you may have noticed, as of lately I haven't posted as much as I used to. The reason for this is twofold:

1) Last february I got a new job in another town about 55 miles from where I live. Sometimes I get home so tired that I simply don't feel like turning my PC on. Not to mention that I use a PC to work, so the last thing I wnat to see in front of me when I get home is another computer. :D

2) The second reson is that I'm getting married next October, so all the free-time I have left - especially on weekends - is spent on my marriage preparations.

anyway, I'd just like to say that I really miss all of you very much. Of course I'll not stop posting here, but if I spend a few days without showing up, don't be worried, ok?

And last, but not least - I have to say something to a very special friend (I won't mention any names, you know who you are): I know I have been a lousy friend lately. I haven't written or shown up in the last few months, but now you know why. Anyway, don't forget I love you as a very dear and special friend. I'll do my best to keep in touch.

Amin Kolya.. the desert of sabbatarianism is bad bad waterless area of dark and pain and selfrighteousness and phariseeizm... Some traits become so inbeded that are hard to get rid off.

It is so painful watching and reading what poor souls are writting. And to know how much worse they think about everyone else is even worse.

Sigh... I'm lonely at the moment, and I'm getting ready to go to bed, and it would mean the world to me if someone would just say "Hi there, I know you're alive" before I go to sleep.

Thanks.

Thanks, CaDan. I guess maybe I do exist!

I love BBQ, but unfortunately, I'll have to pass. I just filled up on a nice, juicy steak and a delicious margarita, so I'm afraid there's no room at the inn.

Nice of you to offer, though.

Wow - what a kind thing to say! Thank you, Xenia.

To tell you the truth, sometimes I feel like I exist in some sort of weird cyber void. The only contact I have with Orthodoxy at all is through books and this forum. I don't know a single Orthodox individual personally.

I don't fit it in my "real" world anymore because I'm leaning heavily toward Orthodoxy, and I don't quite fit in here, because I'm not Orthodox.

Anyway, more than you wanted to know. Thanks again for your kind words. I needed them.

A little more for GMP,

I learned almost all I know about Orthodoxy from books and from the Internet, just like you. I was chrismated a few years ago and I love my parish, but I have no close friends there. They all kiss me when I arrive on Sunday and forget me when I leave. I don't blame them; I make no special effort to make friends, either. Yet if I did find someone I thought I could relate to, I am sure I would make the effort.

Now why is this, I ask myself. At my former church, I had lots of friends. We don't have much in common anymore, so those friendships have pretty much ended. So here I am, pretty much alone on this curious path into this peculiar old church. I know I'm on the right path, but why does God see fit to give me no companions for the journey?

I have come to think this: I am inclined to follow people. If my good friend (back when I had good friends) becomes a vegetarian, I am inclined to take up vegetarianism. I think God wants me to do this with Him and not with another person, because people can fail us but God never will. In other words, this is too serious of a thing to be a mere fad like vegetarianism or quilting or the other things I followed my friends into. So it's just me and Him and the Church, even though the Church can seem pretty impersonal at times.

You'll be ok. We internet Orthodox may not be able to take you a pot of soup when you get sick but we will pray for you and encourage you the best we can.

Love,
Xenia

Oh yeah, and when I get my kitten, I think I've narrowed it down to a few names. If it's a boy: Excalibur, Mortimer, Shashi or Boris. If it's a girl: Etcetera, Serafima, Kiska or Sashenka.

You guys have any suggestions? It's a solid white kitten.

Xenia,

It seems to me that it must have been a pretty big thing for you to step out in faith and become Orthodox - especially if you tend to follow the path of others. The path you have chosen is surely not a common one, at least in the United States.

I am reminded of Abraham. God called him out of Ur, to leave his father's house and his city and go to a place that he did not know. The Lord didn't even tell him what his final destination was, just to step out in faith and follow. God is faithful to bless those who will walk with Him in faith, even when the road seems dark, hard, or lonely. In my experience, the dark, difficult, and lonely days are the ones in which I grow the most in my love for God and my faith in Him.

Thanks for sharing your story, Xenia - you are a blessing!

Grace

TAW is the only forum I do feel comfortable in. I surely do not fit in any of the other denominations anymore. I agree, I was comfortable in my previous church, and had some good friends, and then .... I became very ill, and the doctors in their treatments made it even worse... however, now I'm on the mend (minus the doctors!), and hoping to reach out into the real world soon - would have already if not for this badly sprained ankle. Anyway, I do not know what God has in mind for me, but I do know this... his direction will be good for me - and hopefully for others too.

Could you guys pray for my friend Chiara? And her father, though I don't know his name. She is going through a lot right now, including her father's depression, and I would appreciate it if you would pray for her, and also that she may find divine consolation. She is the most receptive person I have ever met to faith, but she is, right now, still empty. I got her a two-part icon set of the Lord and the Theotokos and she says it is helping... so please pray! I love her very much.

Kolya, Lord is risen!

I tried to upload some pics, but it did not work and then when it did, the file was to big.. so what I am going to do, wait for this Lords Day Coming so I can get some pics of me and the church.. and cut it down so I can send it.. so, answer is soon LOL.

I am great. Been reading and listening to AFR; all in all it is very good. Thank God! Really good. Been praying for His will to be.. and for me to accept His will... so, I guess Angels are goint to bring the answers soon.

I got this angel who really does not care about me... He kinda sticks to what the God tells him to do..(just kidding, it is an awesome angel, as long as you can stick with me, you must have nerves of steel).

I guess I'll have to start asking St. Sava to starts kicking dust up there! (Then again St. Sava will probably say: Wait you serb, get drowned first and then we will talk sbout stuff!)^_^.

How is winter treating you?
