So, I finally have some icons and a hanging lamp is in the mail. I know having an icon corner will help my prayer life, so I'm really excited about. Are there any rules about how an icon corner should be made?

And while we're at it, does anyone know where I can find an icon of "The Joy of All Joys?" Even just a black and white picture of it makes me all teary eyed.

Some links that might help. I have my main icon corner in my bedroom, mainly because my cats tend to get into things (no hanging from the lampada here) and it needs to be safe. It does not face East because there is a window on that wall. Can't do much about things when you rent. I also have icons of Theotokos, Christ the Saviour and Blessed Xenia of St Petersburg (my patron saint) in my living/dining room (but they are high up in safety from the cats). I'm getting another set for the second bedroom/computer room when I have money.

I found a prayer rope helped me immensly to intensify my prayer life. I have a 100 knot one in my icon corner and I often carry a 50 knot one on one of my belt loops for easy access.

Hopefully some of those help you... others probably have websites I don't have here right now...

Do I need to get my house (or room since my family isn't Orthodox) blessed?

Do I need to get my house (or room since my family isn't Orthodox) blessed?

My apartment is not blessed (our priest only does houseblessings between (I guess - I'm not positive on the starting time) Nativity and beginning of Lent) and it has never come up. I would think Father would have said I need to have my house blessed too, if it was necessary. We'll see how it goes since Father is very allergic to animals etc. and I have three cats and a doggie. Us animal-people always feel bad and we were joking we need to get him a long pole with a blessing brush so he can just stand outside and we'll open each window.
All three of my cats are Sacred Birmans (from Burma aka we joke that they are Buddhist) and I would just love to see their faces when they get dosed with Holy Water. Especially since Father has a affection for drenching people... I can visualize him going after the cats... I did have a jar of kitty treats and a doggie bone in my Pasha basket so the pets can stay on the right track too...

House/apartment/dwelling blessings typically began at Theophany. Some priests don't emphasize it that much, others do. Unless your parents consent to having the whole house blessed, he probably wouldn't do a "room blessing." When I lived with my family, they held off on the house blessing (not because my family would've minded probably, but the priest thought it might be "too much, too soon" to ask.) However, when I lived with one other person in an apartment who consented to the whole apartment being blessed, he happily did that.

I'll take a couple pics of my new, improved (ie. away from my door) icon corner once I get home and hunt down a couple batteries for my camera. When I'll get them posted is another question altogether.

I look forward to it!

I'm going to the monastery tomorrow to stock up on icon corner goodness. If I can find someone I know with a digital camera, I'll snap a few and get someone with enough posts to post them for me.

I will photograph mine and post it in the next few days. There's a sleeping baby near it right now, so there's no way I'm engaging that flash bulb! :D
