The other day I went to the protestant Mission on the other side of the city. To see what it was like. Well before I went in I stoped in the doorway. Some person praying began speaking in this erm Gibberish is how i could only describe it. I asked the person what this was and she said 'I was speaking in 'tongues' " ????? what is this "tongues???

It sounds like Pentecostal of Charesmatic... they believe that all those who have been baptised in the Spirit are able to speak in tounges; it seems to be mostly unique to those denominations.

Charismatics tend to believe that, instead of speaking a known language not previously understood by the speaker (which I think is the interpretation of most modern Christians), speaking in tongues is the speaking of an unknown "angelic" language, not meant to be understood by anyone but God. This phenomenon is called glossolalia and is only one of many (disturbing to a visitor) charismata, or "gifts of the Spirit." Other gifts of the Spirit include fainting or being "slain in the Spirit," "Holy Laughter," barking like a dog, and various other highly emotional outbursts. Any given Charismatic church may practice/believe in all or one or more of these charismata, but glossolalia is the most common and unifying one.
Correct me if I'm wrong anywhere.

If you want an Orthodox perspective on this phenomenon, read In Peace Let Us Pray to the Lord (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1928653065/qid=1116187724/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-8539859-5923039?v=glance&s=books) by Fr. Alexis (Trader). Fr. Seraphim Rose touches on it as well in his book Orthodoxy and the Religion of the Future (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/188790400X/qid=1116187814/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-8539859-5923039?v=glance&s=books).

Since this topic has come up, can anyone point me to a resource online that discusses "false tongues" accounts? Such as the one with the 2 Orthodox Arab guys who entered a small church in Alabama while they were speaking in tongues and heard some people speaking perfect Arabic but they were saying horrible, blasphemous things?

Here (http://www.orthodoxphotos.com/readings/sign/gifts.shtml) is an article I found about it.

Oy... stay away from that stuff.

It is not from God.

I think that every great once in a while it might be from God, but so rarely as to be of little consequence.

I head that some people from other countries who came to America and converted to Protestantism recognized their language being spoken in those charismatic "blahblings" and said that those who spoke the "tongues" actually blasphemed the Lord not knowith it. So, it's most definatly demonic. Like the Apostle said that whoever approaches us and starts preaching the teaching which the Apostles didn't teach, we shouldn't listen to them, and even it an Angel of Light will appear and say something different, we shouldn't listen. But how will you tell if the speaking of tongues is of God if you don't even understand what is being said??? How can you check if it corresponds to the original and true teaching? I think it's stupid to make God responcible for every strange thing that happens to a man. Most of the time it's demonic.
