Many pro choice people will base thier main argument for abortion on this statement:
"A baby is not alive until it can survive outside the mother's womb."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Consider if you will the kangaroo. The young of the kangaroo are born seemingly before they should be. They emerge as a tiny, naked, pink fetus looking thingy. They struggle to find the mother's pouch where they attach themselves to a teat and remain until thier development is complete. This little critter has the folowing characteristics:

-Cellular division
-Growth
-Movement

It is also totally unable to survive for any length of time outside of the mother's pouch. (READ: outside the mother)

It is a felony in the state of Georgia (and many others) to take a baby kangaroo, throw it in a blender, give it a few good pulses, and flush it down the toilet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

A Live Oak Tree is the state tree in Georgia. (Live Oak is the name of the species) An oak tree does not move. It does not feel pain. An oak tree does not think. It does however have these characteristics:

-Cellular division
-Growth

It is against the law to kill a Live Oak tree in the state of Georgia.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The sea turtle is an endangered species. The baby sea turtle is unable to survive if prematurely removed from it's egg. (ok.. I will concede that you could probably crack the egg a day before and it might survive....anyhoo...)

The baby sea turtle while in it's egg has the following characteristics:

-Cellular Division
-Growth
-Movement

It is illegal to destroy baby sea turtles and sea turtle eggs.

For that matter, it can also be argued that already born children are parasites on society, because they can't earn a living wage and therefore must be supported by someone - whether it is their parents, foster parents, or whoever - until they are 18.

Of course that is ridiculous! A fetus is simply a stage of development, just like an infant, a child, a teenager, etc. An infant cannot survive without being cared for - cannot feed itself, bathe itself, or clothe itself. A child cannot go out and get a job to support him or herself. A teenager is not as emotionally mature as someone in their 30s. When does it end?!?!!?

I'm all for protecting endangered species and against the senseless killing of animals for sport, but the argument that a baby is not alive because they cannot survive outside the mother's womb is absolutely inane!
