The empty place is 'Tohu', same as used in Genesis 1:2 ( without form)
formlessness, confusion, unreality, emptiness
formlessness (of primeval earth)
nothingness, empty space
that which is empty or unreal (of idols) (fig)
wasteland, wilderness (of solitary places)
place of chaos
vanity
When we look at the Northern sky we see that there is indeed a space that is an empty place, devoid of all stars.
http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~dolan/constellations/gif/precession.gifThat is in the vacinity of Cepheus and Polaris and Ursa Major ( Big Dipper), to the bottom right in this view of the sky above.
Interestingly, Cepheus is also known as 'The KING'. ;) Kinda makes "I will exalt my throne above the stars" new meaning, huh?
Interesting tidbit about Ursa Minor:
Ursa Minor is mostly known for Polaris, the North Star which may be found at the end of the asterism, the Little Dipper. Ursa Minor does not have any mythology attached to it, it was created in the 6th century B.C. as a navigational aid for sailors out of a long forgotten constellation called the Dragon's wing.
About Draco:
Draco, the Dragon, used to hold special significance as the location of the pole star, but due to the Earth's precession, the pole has shifted to Polaris in Ursa Minor. The Dragon is usually associated with guardian's of the temples and treasures. Draco was important as it was the guardian of the star that never moves, the celestial pole. The celestial pole in ancient times was the doorway between the mortal world and the eternity. ( Read more about Draco here http://www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?p=15408762#post15408762)
There is this spot in space that is called now the 'Hubble Deep Field North' that is what seems to be almost devoid of any stars or galexies and guess where it is located? Right at the base of the Dragons tail.
WHERE IS HUBBLE DEEP FIELD NORTH
Centred at right ascension 12h37m50s, declination +62d13m (2000), the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N) mosaic covers a total area of about 200 x 200 square arcsec. The region lies in Ursa Major, the nearest bright star (outside, and actually far-removed physically from HDF-N) being 76 UMa. The star SAO 15901 is even closer to HDF-N. The region is circumpolar from northerly latitudes, greater than latitude +37 degrees, so it is also observable at several major northern observatories on Earth for long periods.

HDF North is located just to the north of the Plough (The Great Dipper) as indicated by a small cross. The star SAO 15901 is marked to aid in identification of the region

Interactive Constellation chart for Draco http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~dolan/constellations/java/Draco.html If you click on the "more stars" button below the chart you will see that approximatey at "5 o'clock" from the tip of draco's tail heading towards the left edge of the bowl of Ursa Major there is nothing visable at all.
The imagery of the night time sky tells a story:
Rev 12:
1 And there appeared a great wonder (SIGN) in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. 3 And there appeared another wonder (SIGN) in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
