How often do you say grace? Before every major meal ie; breakfast, lunch & dinner. Only at dinner time? Only on special occasions? Or before every meal... snacks too?

I couldn't vote either...somewhere in between "For breakfast, lunch and dinner" and "Only on special occasions". not that often, but not that infrequently! but like Rose232, I know I should be thankful more.

I never say grace, but I try to remain thankful for food - especially good food.

I should, but really only do on special occasions. Supposedly if you can do something ten times in a row it becomes a personal habit; I should try that with saying Grace.

What annoys me, are people who say grace, then complain about the food.....

I would never put anything in my mouth without blessing it first. In todays world I would not eat without asking God to clean sanctify and bless it. I would never eat without expressing Thanks to the God who provided it for me.

That is an excellent point.

So, time to confess something: I absolutely love toast. I sometimes think there is no more perfect food than golden-brown white fluffy bread with butter on it.

I just want to point out that the sheer delight to be had from good food is one of the reasons I believe in God.

I always say grace before meals, as does my wife.

It's funny to watch people's reactions in resturants when we both make the Sign of the Cross while saying "In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit", join hands, bow our heads, and recite together softly: "Bless us, O Lord, and these, Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen", then make the Sign of the Cross again while we again invoke the Trinity.....it's one of those "Catholic things" that draws people's attention.

Some people look uncomfortable or embarrassed; some look annoyed or irritated; others look nonplussed. Other Catholics usually smile and nod, while Protestant Fundamentalists will stare at us, stare at each other, and shake their heads in an "Omahgawd" fashion---we've had some folks come over and leave Gospel tracts as they leave the resturant, in order to "save" us.

Regardless of the reaction, we go on saying grace, at home or away, because first, we are thanking God, from Whom all blessings flow, and we also think it's a good witness. We don't do it in a manner that's deliberately provacative, it's quiet and doesn't involve anyone else but us. But you can get profound reactions, nevertheless. We've never had anybody get up and actually leave, but once or twice we have had people glare at us with hostile glances throughout the meal, like we smelled bad or something.

It's interesting. You never know what you're going to get. :D
I just want to point out that the sheer delight to be had from good food is one of the reasons I believe in God.
As my sister is fond of saying, "Food is God's love, made edible." ;)

That's really uncalled for Wols. Unless they are wearing their denomination like a badge on their shirts, you can't possibly know who is protestant and who isn't. This was just meant as a mean slam against a group of people you don't like.

It's called bigotry.

I said one "grace" a long time ago than covered all futured "graces," for the sake of efficiency :-)

I still remain thankful, even for non food things, such as electricty. A relatively major storm hit us (north Texas) recently and knocked out power for 17,000 residents. We were without electricty from Saturday at 10:45pm to Monday at 9:10am.. I am certainly thankful (and realize how much I rely on it and technology that uses it) and don't let a day go by that I don't thank him for it :-)

As i am the only Christian (with the possible exeption of my mum) in my family we never have really said grace.
But then we never sit down to eat together usually (i know it's sad :( you don't have to tell me)

This post has inspired me. Y'know what i'm gonna say grace by myself in the future. Thanx for helping me :)

I make sure that I thank God for His provision before every meal, but my hope is that an attitude of thankfulness would be alive in my heart not only in times of eating. To make a ritual of consuming food does nothing for the soul, and little more for the mind. However, I believe firmly that having a thankful attitude in all that we do benefits us much, as it reminds us of our humble and meek position before our God. Furthermore it reminds us of His constant grace in our lives, which is completely undeserved upon sinners such as us.

To those of you concerned with the "purity" of the food you are eating, I would humbly put forth that there are many people in the world desiring even the most unclean food that you eat. Therefore, I would urge you to be more concerned with rejoicing in God's provision than with questioning the quality of His provision. Perhaps this is something to think about.

May grace and peace be with you,
Nathan

then make the Sign of the Cross again while we again invoke the Trinity.....it's one of those "Catholic things" that draws people's attention.

Well, Wolseley, making the sign of the cross is not really just a 'Cahtolic thing', but I definitely understand where you are coming from with people looking at you funny. :)  I, personally, have decided to pay more attention to my prayers, my meal, and my companionship than the other people who could possibly be watching. That way, I'm not even aware if people decide that they want to have a problem with what I am doing. :holy: :sigh:

I don't say grace as often as I should, and I think that my problem stems in part from the fact that my husband and I are almost always 'eating on the run'. When we do sit down to a legitimate meal (instead of a handfull of something here and there), it is with my family. Since my father is atheist and my sister is wiccan, you can imagine how tense dinner time is under those circumstances. Instead, I usually express my thanks when I say my morning and evening prayers.

I say grace for all I eat. Even if I am in the middle of eating it and I had forgotten to thank God for the food, I stop and say grace.
Even if it is an apple or a chocolate bar.
I am thankful to the Lord for all I have.
I don't want any food unless it has been blessed by God almighty!!!

In my house we take turns saying grace. We all say the same one, which makes it special. "Bless us, O Lord, and these, Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen" It sounds really neat coming from someone different each night. I want to make a habit of saying it for breakfast and dinner.

I forget to say grace, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas, which was my answer. My brother's family says grace always, even at restaurants and I want to remember, especially because of the words "and when He had given thanks, He broke the bread"! I say Grace at every mealtime and it goes this way:

"Dearest Heavenly Father, thank you Father God for this food you have provided and your Blessings upon it. In Jesus' Name, through The Holy Ghost, Amen."

I know it is rather simple and to the point, but then, you don't want to take too long because the food will get cold. Anyway, after I bless it, I dig in!!!!

I try to give thanks for everything...breakfast, lunch or supper. Without The Lord I would not have anything I have today...he has made the food in my life possible. Usually I save my big prayers for all those I love and my enemies and issues close to my heart before I go to bed or quiet time at night...usually before meals I say a pray that was taught to me at school...yes school...when I was little "God is great God is good let us thank him for our food by his hands we all are fed give us Lord our daily bread" I think this prayer sums up everything...The Lord is our daily bread.

I ALWAYS say Grace for breakfast, lunch and supper. Since I am very new at this, I occassionally (although not often anymore) forget, and if that happens, I stop right away and say it. Unfortunately, I don't usually even think to do it if I eat say, a potato chip or something small like that, but I do ALWAYS get it in for the meals.

God bless,

I voted "Only on special occasions." However, I must say that I say grace more often than on special occasions, it's just really rare. Maybe once per week if that. I never remember to say it. It wasn't anything that I did growing up either except for on Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners sometimes. I've always been used to just simply sitting down and digging in. lol. But I am of course, thankful to God for my food and for pretty much everything. I don't necessarily feel that I need to tell Him that in a prayer for Him to realize that.

I try to rember to say it all the time, but some times, I might grab a bag of chips, and munch without saying Grace, other times I do.

And then when the bag is just there at the desk the next day, I might just reach in a grab some without even thinking.

Just joking! hee, hee...but I just think thats cute.

I pray over all my big meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner...but if its a bag of chips, then no, I won't. Is that bad? LOL.

I usually just say, 'thank you Lord Jesus for this meal I am about to receive. I pray Lord that You may bless the meal and bless the hands that prepared it. I pray that it nourishes my body, and I always give you thanks and praise for everything You set before me.

Something like that ^^

My family doesn't pray before meals (aren't really Christians) but when my friends family and I go out to eat, we always hold hands and pray. Usually we get a few stares, but nothing drastic.

We mostly get that 'awww..thats so cute their praying' attitude. How is praying 'cute'? *scratches head*

I try to be thankful for everything in my life whether it's food or trials. I strive to continually let the Lord know how thankful I am but if I forget to verbally show my gratitude I think He is merciful enough to overlook it. I don't think God is as legalistic as we are. I would also be careful not to pray as the Pharisees did with repetitive, meaningless words. I never pray for the sake of being heard or for the sake of prayer itself.

Oh dear. I just realized something. My family don't say Grace. I'm the only one in my family who is a christian. Just a thought: Maybe I have been using the fact that my family don't say grace as an excuse to not say grace myself. I'm not sure, but maybe!

I've thought about the future and having my own family and always wanting to say grace together but, how silly is that?! Why say grace then when I don't say grace now? It needs to start now. Just because my family doesn't say grace doesn't mean I can't. Thanx for helping me realize this! :D;)

Here's a story I heard a while back on this very subject, I'm not good at telling stories but here it goes anyway...
At a small church they were having one of their regular church dinners as was their custom. The food was made ready and everyone gathered around for prayer before the meal. As the pastor started "Heavenly Father, please bless this food..." At this point he was cut off by one of the old men in the congregation who felt the need to exclaim "There's nothing wrong with the food!"...
This is all I was told/remember of the story itself but the point was that there are more important things to pray about than just food when we sit down to talk to God before meals.
I usually have a short prayer time before meals. Doing more than just asking blessing on the food and actually taking some time to talk to God has really helped my prayer life. It is a great to slow down and take time to pray during the middle of the day, I would highly recommend it.
God Bless Ya'll

I couldn't vote on this one because none of the answers fit my answer. I, unfortunately, was not brought-up in a household were saying grace was important ... neither was my husband. So, although we are both trying very hard to stress the importance of living a Godly-life to our son, saying grace is one thing that sometimes slips through. I try to remember to say grace with my son at every meal, but it doesn't always happen that way.

Occasionally... That's bad, I know. We, too, didn't grow up in a strict Christian home and grace wasn't really an issue. Now, after being saved for over 4 years, I want to, but it feels very awkward. My kids would be into it, but my husband, who goes to church with us now and then, would think I'm crazy or just showing off or something along those lines...so, we don't.

I'm protestant, so I don't say the Catholic Grace, but I do always give thanks to the Lord before I eat. Its something I view as being important because it means I have to stop before doing something as routine as eating, and thanking the Lord for all he has blessed me with. It keeps me rooted a little more in my faith.
I generally say it only in front of meals, unless I'm snacking on something more substantial then a couple of biscuits etc, then I just pray when I feel led to.

Breakfast, lunch & dinner.

1 Timothy 4:4-5(KJV)
4) For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 5) For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Now that I think about, I'd better start saying grace for everything I eat. Snacks, and the like, usually need more sanctification then the rest. LoL.

I'm really bad about praying before meals. My prayer time is usually right before I go to bed, or first thing when I wake up in the morning.

Generally I say grace for main meals, but I've been known to thank the Father for a snack. Everything he gives, is from his mercy grace and love, and therefore He should be honoured. That being said, God knows our hearts also. As long as we are not ashamed of Him, and love Him, it is enough.

Well I'm in the middle between, breakfast lunch and dinner and only on special ocasions. If Im eating alone, I tend to forget if Im with family or freinds we remember. So since I work at a ministry we eat lunch together and I join them for most dinners....

It is funny what reactions you get in the restaurant when you say grace.. My friends and I just bow our heads and pray out loud!! It's really quite funny, because people are always staring at us in the wierdest manner. It is an awesome witness though!!

I say "Grace" at certain times.
I am not a real religious person.
I do go to church in all and I am saved and all that stuff. I just don't say "Grace" but at a certain time.

I do try to say a little grace before I eat anything. Sometimes it's just a silent little thank you. And i do forget sometimes i admit. I remind my kiddos to say grace before each of their meals. I think prayer is so important. I always remind my children to pray and communicate w/God.

Growing up we said grace all the time before the dinner. I still remember it. "Bless us oh Lord for these I gifts, which we are about to receive, through thy bounty, in Christ, oh Lord, Amen." However now we only say it when someone remembers to, like on a special occasion, eating in the dining room and all that. :P

I try to pray many times throughout the day, and use mealtime as a reminder to thank God once again for His blessings.
When I go to lunch with Christian friends we generally pray before we eat thanking God for fellowship and food. We don't genuflect but we do hold hands and at times we get "looks" from others.
The most encouraging thing is a few times I have seen others sitting nearby also bow their heads for a second. Maybe praying in public is a gentle reminder to others that we need to continue to be grateful to God.

I say grace all the time, every time I have something to eat or drink. I love this one:
Lord God of all the universe, through your goodness we have this food which Earth has given and human hands have made. We give you thanks and praise, Almight God, for this and all of your blessings and ask You to bless us, Oh Lord, and these your gifts which we receive from your bounty. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen!
