Matthew 12: 1 - 50
1 One Shabbat during that time, Yeshua was walking through some wheat fields. His talmidim were hungry, so they began picking heads of grain and eating them.
2 On seeing this, the P'rushim said to him, "Look! Your talmidim are violating Shabbat!"
3 But he said to them, "Haven't you ever read what David did when he and those with him were hungry?
4 He entered the House of God and ate the Bread of the Presence!" -- which was prohibited, both to him and to his companions; it is permitted only to the cohanim.
5 "Or haven't you read in the Torah that on Shabbat the cohanim profane Shabbat and yet are blameless?
6 I tell you, there is in this place something greater than the Temple!
7 If you knew what `I want compassion rather than animal-sacrifice' meant, you would not condemn the innocent.
8 For the Son of Man is Lord of Shabbat!"

How can the cohanim profane the Shabbat and yet be blameless?
Any thoughts on this?

It means that when the cohanim 'observed Torah' as ordered, they were tasked with meanial duties, on Shabbat. B'midbar 28:9
"'On Shabbat offer two male lambs in their first year and without defect, with one gallon of fine flour as a grain offering, mixed with olive oil, and its drink offering.
Vayikra 24:5 "You are to take fine flour and use it to bake twelve loaves, one gallon per loaf. 6 Arrange them in two rows, six in a row, on the pure table before ADONAI. 7 Put frankincense with each row to be an offering made by fire to ADONAI in place of the bread and as a reminder of it. 8 Regularly, every Shabbat, he is to arrange them before ADONAI ; they are from the people of Isra'el, as a covenant forever. The amount of "WORK" required by Torah on the Shabbat is what Yeshua was refering to. He remarks that it's not the work (or lack there of), or the Temple, that produces holiness, it's the Ruach HaKodesh. YHVH.
"Have you not read how I gave mitzvot to the levi to WORK on my Shabbats?, I AM Lord of all, I created Shabbat. And you do not understand it." (paraphrase)

You try swinging a few hinds quarters as a wave offering and you will start to sweat and give your body a workout.:P
Obedience to the commandment for them they were commanded to do these things on the sabbath for them not to would have been disobedience to the Torah.
Hunger and pain causes the body discomfort/work so eating and healing actually fulfill the sabbath. If they had a sickle and were harvesting then that would have been a totally different matter.
Shalom,
Mikhail
