Aside from the Bible what book has had the greatest impact on your life? Please do not name the Bible...we all agree that the Bible is the greatest book on earth - I am interested in additional reading. If you do not believe in reading anything besides the Bible, please just ignore this thread. The purpose of this thread is to promote spiritual growth - I hope to find and read the books listed here. Thank you.

My choice: Why Revival Tarries by Leonard Ravenhill. I had to get on my knees after reading the first page...:)

Thanks for the feedback.

I hope you are not getting sick of my questions...:)

My second most important book? It's got to be, "Gone With The Wind." I've always pictured myself as a good looking Rhett Butler.....

Umm.........surely you jest! :D Rhett Butler was my childhood epitome of the perfect man....so when you say 'a good looking' Rhett....you do realize he was already good-looking, right? ;) Ah, those dimples!

Launch out into the Deep by Mark Rutland.

This is a testimonial that will knock your socks off. It should come with a warning.....

'Warning! Warning! The following book is harmful to the laundry, cooking and stack of bills! They won't get done while reading this book! Beware!' :D

For English speaking Christian people, the Book of Common Prayer is probably one of the most important. On pentecost, English people walked in to churhc and heard the service for the first time ever in their native tongue, English. Previously it had been in Latin.

I would say that Darwin's Origin of the Species has been one of the most influential books in the world, not on my life specifically so much as in society in general. Society's shift from believing in creation by God to evolution by chance has affected the world profoundly.

Free online-you can't beat that-it's a BIG BOOK-and a standard in mennonite family libraries and churches...

Just going through it and looking at the pictures is as gruesome as anything you can see-highly recommended!

Well I am listing more than one..... :)

Gary Smalley - "The Joy that Lasts" - about keeping your life in perspective
Charles Stanley - "Handle with Prayer" - about developing a true relationship with God...your personal relationship
Beth Moore - "When Godly People do Ungodly things" -just an excellent book from understanding the tricks Satan likes to play using our weaknesses no matter how strong we believe our relationship with God is. Solidified what my heart told me, and tells me. A wake up call to ALL of us as Christians on accountability and vulnerability.
CS Lewis- "Mere Christianity" - many statements he made solidified what my heart tells me rather than "what I had learned"

Trust me I am sure there is more.... ;)

Hahaha - my husband is "mad" at me because I developed Mennonite theology without being exposed to Mennonites. He is terrified that I will whine him into converting to Mennonite! (He's a minister with another denomination)

I told him no way - I wanted to go Amish!

good question,

for me probably the top three are as follows, in no particular order

Mere Christianity - C.S. Lewis
Orthodoxy - G.K. Chesterton
Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien

Also, I can't not mention
The Persuit of God - A.W. Tozer

Oooo...I'm prolly going to get tossed out on my ear for these...

"God Emperor of Dune" Frank Herbert
Why? Nudged me closer to Jesus. Started me wondering. No particular reason...God uses everything to His purpose. :amen:

The entire Narnia series. What an awesome series for kids...Adults too! C.S. Lewis.

"Illusions" See my explaination for "Dune".

Last but not least "Left Behind"...This one shattered me and brought me back to the Lord. Not everyone's cup of tea but I'm incredibly thankful.

Have to think a bit more about this question...the titles are blurring in my mind. Soooooo many. Right now though I've been buried in the Word since Nov. 15th 2004 :D

He's a vegetarian. Sigh. Who ever heard of a vegetarian amish guy? plus, he isn't "tool" oriented. He's much better off with modern conveniences.

Some powerful testimonies there. That read was a blessing to me also.

Mere Christianity - C.S. Lewis

A classic. The Problem of Pain was another excellent one by Lewis.

In His Steps - Charles M. Sheldon

I loved that one also.

Just Like Jesus - Max Lucado

My favorite book by Lucado is In the Grip of Grace.

Well i have to add a couple more books to my list of favorites:

I already named "Why Revival Tarries"

Other favorites include...

"Holiness" by J.C. Ryle
"Revival Lectures" by Charles Finney
"Rees Howells Intercessor" by Norman Grubb (I know he is controversial...but this biography is excellent!!)

It's an good book. It drives home the point that we are here for a purpose and that it isn't about me, it's all about the Lord Jesus Christ. But, I knew that :)
It's a good tool for those searching.
This one is for the girls
On The Other Side of the Garden - Biblical Womanhood.
I read that book when I was first saved.

I have not read all of it yet, but in what I have:

His unique perspective into the satisfying joy that Christ brought which easily drowned out his sexual lusts.

The amazing work of prayer in that of his mother praying for him for so long.

I also just flat out love the way he writes, he is so descriptive and fights to conquer the seemingly most petty sins.
