I'm praying for you and Seraphima. I'm sorry to hear that you both are not doing well. I'm still struggling with some difficult decisions but it should be gone by this week.

Nicodemus,
Congrats to you and the wife.
All the best!
P.S. Just a reminder, this would NOT be a good time to ask the wife if she wants another one.:D
After hours upon hours of labor and then having to have a C Section, I said to my wife later, "So...I suppose if we want more kids, that adoption is looking pretty good right now." :D

Yes indeedy. I've been "functioning" on 2-3 hours per night. It's magnified by the fact that my wife can do virtually nothing because of the C Section and we have no family here.

That's not the problem! My mom doesn't really want to have much to do with the planning at all. Her latest was: Oh, that date isn't very good. I was planning on going to Sweden to hunt then. I'll have to see what I do now...
I was ready to scream... but I've decided I'm just not going to let it get to me and just say: Well, you choose whatever is more important to you. At least I'll have my dad back me up this coming week. I just cry when I get upset and she of course gets a kick out of that... UGH UGH UGH!! My mom is soooo self centered!

My inlaws frustrate me so badly sometimes. While they're here, we're sleeping the bedroom with the baby and they're in our bedroom. Our prayer/icon corner is in our bedroom. I got up this morning and found spare change, sewing needles, credit cards and a face cream jar on the table scattered amongst icons, prayer ropes, The Holy Scriptures, prayer books, etc. If I went into their house and threw my wallet and keys on top of their shrine, they'd have a heart attack. They don't wear shoes in their house because they say their home is a temple due to the presence of the idol, yet they can't keep their clutter and stuff on the nightstand or the dresser? GRRRRRRRR.

What are your parents, Nicodemus?
My wife's parents are Jain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jainism)
(my parents are lapsed Methodists)
Besides annoying, that is? They're generally very nice people, but they do some unbelievably obnoxious stuff. For instance, when we got home from the hospital, we discovered that they decided to rearrange all of the furniture in our house and to do stuff like that (my mother in law is really into feng shui.) I can't find jack squat right now either. I asked them where something was tonight and they said they don't remember, but that it isn't that important right now. They're right that it isn't very important, but they're missing the point that I put it somewhere I wanted it and now I don't know where it is and that you don't rearrange someone's entire house without asking.

When my son had jaundice, they told me to breast feed him on demand at least every two hours and to place him near the window so that he could get sunlight.

Nicodemus, I'll pray for your little Isaac! My ex had jaundice when he was little and they said the mom had too much iron during the pregnancy (that was a long time ago so who knows). Good try Emmanuel. Sounds more like Dutch though.:) Did you use 'Babelfish'?
It should read: Goeie dag, hoe gaan dit? (Good day, how are you?<lit. How's it going?>) Hoe dat could also mean "How's that?
We should start a language lab thread here. lol

Dear Kolya,
Could you please kindly consider starting a thread here in TAW where we could learn a few words of Afrikaans. I have encountered a little in my linguistics classes and it's a very interesting language.
Is your language phonetic based?
I'll see if I can find my Language Files text - they have lots of examples of Afrikaans.
Thanks,

Most certainly Elizabeth. Yes it is mostly phonetic. Many new words though are transliterated directly from english.
Just let me get past this weekend - I have two days of DL ahead of me - then I'll start with a rudimentary lesson.
I'm off to bed now. Have a great week-end.

I remember looking at the language and wondering if what I was seeing was a transliteration (like Greek into English phonemes) or if it was the real thing.
Thanks, I welcome any input ... but I am studying for finals now until the end of May. So, if you need to take time to come up with the thread ... please do take your time. Since your language is based on the Dutch, it should be very similar to German and English. Isn't that true?
Perhaps we should cut and paste our posts here into a new thread? I wonder if Oblio (our Reader Chris) can help us out?
Thanks to all.

Oh my, I awoke to a WINDY Saturday! I had remembered how windy New Mexico can be, but it had been a few years. I think, however, that the weather is a bit more pronounced this year than when I lived here last.
Tonight the newly illumined and me, the remaining catechumen, are meeting with Father before Vespers. I plan to spend a good part of the day doing laundry and trying to catch up on my reading for the catechumenate. If I could just stay focused I might be able to catch up.

Good day America, it's 4:45pm here now. The day is almost done.
Fine Elizabeth. I'll take my time. Hope all goes well with your studies. I'll pray for you. I've saved our messages to a word doc, so we can take it later from there. It is a Germanic language, with input from slaves in the 19th century imported from Indonesia. Some interesting results.:)
Our English Liturgy this morning went OK, but there was a poor attendance, and nobody communed.:sigh: A little dissapointing for us, but we did it to the Honor and Glory of God. That is the motive anyhow.
Have a good day all!

Howdydoo!!
Greetings from Finland! Wonderful and glorious spring time... it's soooo darn pretty here right now. Fantastic weather on top of all.
Yesterday I went to the meeting I came for but ended up skipping out on the rather boring dinner with my pompous relatives and went fishing instead with a friend I hadn't seen for a year. Caught a rainbow trout! Pretty fish - put up a good fight!
I'm soooo tired tho, I've gotten very little sleep cuz I've been sitting up chatting with people half the night. It's going to be some very rough next few days with finals and stuff that I need to get done. YIKES!
Anyways, I'll head back to the US tomorrow and should be back to semi normal on Monday... although very busy the next few days.
Take care everyone!
PS: Now I'm going to hunt for the icon of St Nicholas my mom can't find. GRRR! Grandma bought me a new book about Icons and internal and external journies of the faith. Now I just have to keep my hands off of it til I'm done with school.

My inlaws are going to drive me to drink! They're trying to institute more of their pagan customs on my son! They want to put a black dot on him to ward off the "evil eye" and they've collected his precise birth information (which I wanted to conceal from them) so they can go to an astrologist to get his "life prophecy" deciphered.
I've repeatedly told them I don't want my child involved in any of that stuff. I KNOW they are going to pull these stunts later in life when we let him spend the weekend with them or something like that. I hate having to be firm and/or rude, but they were warned in advance that we didn't even want to talk about it, much less be petitioned to entertain these wild notions.

Your inlaws are probably afraid that since your wife converted to Christianity, Isaac will not know anything of his heritage. Do what you can to allay their fears, and make sure he learns about the culture your wife's family is from. If your inlaws speak a language other than English, perhaps Isaac can be taught that language growing up. They might not be so pushy with the religious beliefs then.

Please don't let them have him alone for the weekend. I never did allow that because my parents were into Benny Hinn. Tell them that you can come and visit with them or have a family outing but never leave him alone, not even to baby sit. Otherwise, you might find a permanent black tatoo on his forehead.
Have you heard about kidnappings by grandparents?... it is done especially by religious fanatics.

Dear Alexis:
What is your user name at OC.net and Monachos?
I stay away from Monachos - I just don't like it except for the online articles which are quite excellent. I wish we could have a section here at CF where we could generate good articles. I suggested it, but it went nowhere quickly.
There are a lot of us who know how to research and generate good scholarly papers. I'd sure like to see that here. However, there would have to be some way to edit and combine the posts in an orderly method utilizing moderator privileges in a special forum or area of the board that is inaccessible to others and also to protect by having copyrights, etc. I guess that was a big issue as some people may copy our hard earned essays and then sell them on those special student paper websites. Monachos does copyright their online articles, but Monachos is more like a website than just a forum. The forum is just one part of their website. The same set-up appears at the Byzantine Forum. CF appears to be only a Forum, but Erwin may have some areas that I don't know about.
Neither do I frequent OC.net as there are some types there that just complain and whine all the time about the postings of others. It spoils the whole forum.
What is the Cross and Flame?
If you cannot post this information without violating the rules here, which keep changing weekly or even daily, then please PM me. Perhaps that would be best and preserve your confidentiality.
Thanks. Try not to violate any rules at CF because we love you. Just stay in TAW where hopefully you will be safe.

Yes.
They know we want Isaac to be proud of his Indian heritage. That's why he has an Indian middle name and why we named him after an Asian saint. They know that I'm very supportive of him knowing Indian stuff too (we have quite a collection of Indian music.) Yes, they do speak another language and we will encourage him to learn it as much as is possible (though I'd rather he put effort into learning something edifying like Greek...maybe he can do both.)
Regarding the religions stuff, they pull a trick or two with that stuff. They say things like "You have to let him decide, he's our grandson, you have to let him be open minded." I'm skeptical though because these are the same people that told me I should "marry a white girl and make her happy because it's is fine to be friends with other people but people should marry their own."

Met a guy and his fiance at Vespers tonight that are getting chrismated soon. He graduated Presbyterian seminary and as he was about to get assigned, he said he felt the Presbyterian church was too scholastic and too business-like. He said he wanted to be a part of a church of prayer. Said he looked up "ancient Christian prayers" on the internet and found that many/most of them were still in use in Orthodoxy, started investigating about 10 months ago and will join in about a month's time!

In an unrelated story, my little son gets the hiccups about 5 times a day.
My son did also and the doctor said it was normal. He eventually outgrew it. But I noticed that sometimes when I would go to the store ... and there was a lot of new fabric order (formaldehyde) then he would hiccup again.
My son also got intrauterine hiccups before he was born and that was something else. There was this rhythmic bump, but again the doctors say that is normal and to be expected. If the child doesn't have hiccups, ever, then they worry. Don't ask me why. It has something to do with a normal nervous system.
Hope this helps.
Lovingly in Christ,
Elizabeth

Thank you for these thoughts, Aria! I told Father last week that I somewhat regretted not getting Chrismated on Pascha, because the experience of all those services brought me to a very "convinced" place.
Since then, of course, watching the tapes and reading have brought up questions and concerns and blah blah blah...I've done the "concern" thing for a long time now and, while I know Orthodoxy has that "all or nothing" aspect going for it, I may need to jump on in, doubts yet intact. Maybe it's time to trust God instead of my human reason.

Vespers was amazing last night. One of our Romanian members and two of her relatives brought food to share. If I understood correctly, part of the service was on the six-month anniversary of her grandmother's going to the Lord, and it is a Romanian custom to share blessed food with neighbors. It was very touching!
Orthodoxy is so many wonderful things. It's right under everyone's nose, and it's a way to get to know the world. I feel so lucky!

Blech! I had the same problems with Strattera. I can't do any of the extended release ones and am back on Adderal, minimal dosage that I can control as I feel needed. Works great for me (I was only diagnosed 2 years ago, but ADD definitely runs in my family). I only take it on days I need it (school days and when I need to study/get something done). It makes me worry less about getting addicted in any way. But I sure as heck keep away from it after 6 pm... A lot of the extended release really depend on your metabolism so they can last a lot longer than they should (mine didn't last long enough).
But if you feel you won't benefit from it, then don't take it. It's not for your mom to pick... I see direct benefits from it and people who spend time with me while I'm on Adderal and off notice a clear difference in focus. Never take it on weekends, but Divine Liturgy gives me no problems (good sign there :D ).

Good afternoon everybody :P
My mom is making noises about putting me back on dope. Strattera produces effects indistinguishable from cocaine in low doses, and it produces all kinds of other side effects, mostly in places I already have problems with (dizziness, sleeping problems). Please pray. I hate this.
:crosseo: Prayers for you Matrona.
I've recently went back on my Prozac. Sounds like the side effects are similar. I've actually stayed on it long enough this time for it to begin working (I think)...but still it makes me feel nervous and restless most of the time, so I wonder if it's really worth it. I'm going to give it a while longer, then decide for sure.

It feels so good to be on vacation this week. I actually got all the little errands that I usually can't fit into my day accomplished. Got me a paper shredder, so I'm going to attack my file folders tonight. I think I still have old bill stubs and paychecks from 4 & 5 years ago hanging around. I'm so scared to throw stuff away.

Speaking of drugs, I have a doctor's appt this evening to get onto an SSRI antidepressant/antianxiety. My brain is just too analytical and obsessive, gotta slow it down. I was on Paxil (paroxetine) before, but it really had no effect. I am not expecting much from a new prescription -- I actually expect to recover mostly through growing up, maturing, deconstructing lies I've believed and becoming Orthodox :)

Back in the day when I was on them my doctor said the efficiency has a lot to do with your metabolism (Paxil made me horribly sick from just one pill, while others very similar worked ok - well minus the out-of-body experiences which led to me just flushing all pills down the drain). They did help me but it actually just overshadowed the real problem. Depression is very closely linked to ADD/ADHD and when I got treated for ADD my depression went away. I still have to fight Seasonal Affected Depression Disorder (SADD-Winter blues) but it's a lot 'lighter' than what I had to deal with before and more linked to light and such than anything else. Anyone can look at my grades to see the difference between pre-ADD and after I got diagnosed.

Topamax? It can also make you tired and dizzy and disoriented, but supposed to work well. I've taken Relpax for acute migraines/when they are coming on with good results although, it does knock you out sometimes. Zomig and Axert knocked me out like no other, better than any sleeping pill ever (like cold out for 8 hrs).

Seraphima is so bad, that Zomig and the others don't even kill the "devil". There is a suppository - Cafracott - that kills the migraine, but THAT leaves her drained for 48 hours (And nausious). She is on Epilim - an anti-epileptic drug - that seems to keep most of them at bay. Just one or two a month get by that. Then its bad.
Keep well, and all the best with the exams!

Truly He is Risen!
Good news for today is that Father emailed me late last night and told me that Sister Glykeria came home from the hospital today and is doing very well. She can still definitely use some prayers to make a complete recovery.
Please say a little prayer for me too today (well, yea, I'm still up) as I need to finish reading and the write a paper. I doubt I'll sleep any until maybe Wed night or Thursday except for an hour here and there. Shouldn't have gone to Finland... really getting me now, reading for finals and I need to do some massive cleaning before my parents come. My apartment looks like a Cat 7 hurricane and some tornadoes went thru. UGH! I just hope I can get it all done. Make up test tomorrow, then to the library to read a bunch and then write a 4-6 page final exam paper. Another one of those 'history of the world in two pages'. I felt like I was on top of things... but I guess not. Boo Hiss on me...
I'm not so bad yet that I need preventive meds, I've been able to control a lot with diet (esp fluids). I have dispensation to drink water on Sunday mornings, but it seems like as long as I drink a lot late in the evening I'll be ok. And if I get a bit of a headache it's something that will just take off with a bit of ibuprofen. I know I'm setting myself up for a massive migraine with no sleep, but I don't have much of a choice... Well, back to work... I'll check in a while when I take another break.

I can stand being offended. Though it's almost impossible to offend me over the internet anymore. What I can't stand is all these "I'm okay, you're okay" policies being implemented.
We have Nestorians, Arians, Spongites, ect. flooding these boards, and now they are restricting members from telling these people that they are wrong.
It doesn't matter if you have female/gay clergy, it doesn't matter if you think Scripture has any worth, nothing matters, so long as you have some vague belief in this guy Jesus, whoever He may be.

I tried a couple of the Orthodox boards and was shocked by the disunity and unChristian behaviour that was the rule, not the exception.
On CF, the Orthodox Church is immersed in a sea of heresy (just as in life) and She seems to draw together and be the Church rather than splintering and falling into bickering. Interesting.

Indeed. Look at what happened in the west without persecution. It reminds me of some interesting "things" I have found:
In my prayer book, it says "Help Orthodox Christians to struggle." Not through struggles, but -to- struggle.
In the New Testament, Luke 21:12 states "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you...." What if this was in fact taken to mean (though unknown to the persecutor) a blessing?

Battling heresies over in GH, sometmes I wonder if it is worth it. There is a gang that firmly believes that Christ's Divinity separated from His humanity when He died (haven't got a response on where His Divinity hung out, or when it was reincarnated). He called his wife and told her they finally get to go to an Orthodox Church.... I told him he's welcome any Sunday... They are episcopalian and their priest is very good friends with one of the Orthodox priests here Baltimore (not Greek one) so he's going to try to figure out who it is because I know the OCA, the Antiochian, my MP Father, and I doubt it's the ROCOR priest as he is Russian. It was just so sweet how excited he got...

My sleep deprivation is already beginning now with my restless wife, who's in her final month of her pregnancy. If we're lucky this next baby will be as quiet and restful as the first two, who rarely cried. We set alarms to feed them at regular intervals so they would never have to cry for food. I'm sure some babies will cry all the time, regardless, but we were blessed.

I went through that with my daughter. I never knew what exactly she wanted...food? new diaper? WHAT? WHAT?? WHAT??? I would finally get her to sleep...then as soon as I placed her in the crib.....crying AGAIN.
My son was exactly the opposite. He slept ALL the time. I could barely get him to wake up to eat. Turns out, Noah was a very fitting name. I think I read somewhere that Noah means "restful" or "peaceful" or smth like that.

Lotar...your profile pic is great. That was my favorite movie when I was a kid. I used to think David Bowe was SO HOT in that movie.^_^
What are you talking about? That's me. :P
The Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal were two of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I still think they're awesome, and rent them whenever I have kids around.

Hi all my friends,
Those still up, have a pleasant night's rest. Those writing exams, may God's Holy Spirit be with you as you write.
Please say a prayer for me. The doctor's found a "mass" in my abdomen and I have no insurance. I am using a free medical clinic and they have found a way for me to have some tests and to consult with a urologist (as I have blood in my urine) for no cost. However, with my husband off in Europe and not in contact with me (and not supporting me financially), I am really worried. I am in my own business so I have no benefits. I don't fear the "mass" or what it is... I fear financial ruin.
Pray for me to trust God more! Lord have mercy!
Prayers going up as I type.:prayer:
May our Sweet Lord Jesus and most Glorius and Undefiled Mother of God have mercy on you. May all our collective Patron Saints pray for you too.
XB!

And when you don't have kids around? Inconceivable! (or has that been surpassed by Napoleon Dynamite?)

Ok, I've finished my paper... now if I could figure out how to cram 160 pages of ultra boring text into my head in an hour... any suggestion except for mild violence :D ... but the stuff is pretty much current events so I should have a decent grip.
This is my last exam before graduating... WHOO HOOO!!! Now I just have to survive first... grr boo hiss...
Then I get to come home and clean, pick up the parents and my bro from the hotel (they got in last night) and get their rental car... fun.
Well, I'm out of here... Have a great one!

I just found out this morning that my son is now too old to continue attending daycare. I have no idea what to do with him this summer while I'm working.

Is there a day camp? That's where my parents dumped me and my sister. :P They have them at schools around here and they keep kids busy all day with trips to the library or making arts and crafts.
Noah's about nine or ten, isn't he? Maybe you can get him work doing odd jobs, raking yards and stuff. He'll hate having to work his butt off, but he might make good money.

I must just be out of the loop or something, but where has Michael been?

If he's old enough and relatively non-rambunctious, you could also have him do volunteer work at an old folk's home or a homeless shelter. If worse gets to worse, does your school district offer elective courses during summer school?
