Good evening, everyone!

He had a beautiful service last night here in my hometown. We were all worried at first, because it was pouring here. But guess what - a few minutes before 11:30 pm it simply stopped raining, so we could make the procession outside the church.

Also it was the first time I sung the troparia all by myself. Must say I was a little nervous at first, but I guess it was ok - at least I sung in tune. ;)

Anyway, I'd like to wish you all a blessed and happy Pascha!

Aaaaaugh... I'm so full!

Today we had Agape Vespers at my priest's other parish. (Pascha night was at my own parish.) I hadn't been to St. "Spyridon's" since last year at Agape Vespers, when they were still meeting at a building that belonged to a certain social club. Well, this social club decided that they didn't need to own a building of their own anymore, so they offered to sell it to St. Spyridon's. That was the last time I saw this building, until today.

They now have a REAL iconostasis instead of icons on music stands, hardwood floors to replace the plaid carpet, a raised altar area, fresh paint on the inside and the outside, icons all over the walls instead of pictures of club members... it's just an amazing transformation. (They once had a huge swordfish on the wall!)

The service went well and we had a great time with so much food to eat. One lady (a German lady, a lapsed RC, neighbor to one of the parishioners) brought THE MOST DELICIOUS TIRAMISU I HAVE EVER EATEN. And one of the people from my parish brought a brown-sugar pound cake. Greek potatoes, lamb, ham, macaroni and cheese... everything was soooo good.

Haha, there is a standing threat at my parish that someone is going to write a book 'Bloopers behind the Royal Doors'. Just today Father got stuck on the altar table (our chapel at the cemetary is really small and you almost have to walk sideways behind the altar table).

That what happened here too... it poured when we got to church, then stopped and then started drizzling just before Father knocked on the door.

Congratulation on singing! Our normally wonderful choir sounded like they had gotten into the wine early and were completely off key. Our choir director even said today that he didn't have a clue what happened to them... so I guess now all the C & E Christians think they are that bad all the time...

Blessed Pasha to you too!

Your lucky that they had a good experience, and stuck it out.

I was an altar boy for two weeks, but then I was scared out of my mind and I told the priest I couldn't do it any more because I was afraid if I did something wrong I would mess up the Liturgy. It was mostly because I was very stressed out because on my second week behind the altar they didn't have their usual altar boys so they made me hold the censer during the great entrance. You would be freaked out too if you had to walk backwards throughout the entire church slowly censing the Communion chalice, and it was only your second week.

I'm not only full... I was sopping wet when I came back from Agape Vespers tonight. Father got me with the Holy Water twice (I'm positive he aimed big time) :D ! Right now I'm like a walking pillar of insense because the chapel is so tiny and it was more like a smoke pit than a chapel...

My readings went well (I did the Finnish and Swedish reading, I would have done French too but I didn't have a chance to look over the text).

Btw, is anyone here (other than Padraig) going to St Tikhon's for the pilgrimage over Memorial Day weekend?

It was a very good weekend...my 1st Pascha was very happy. X mentioned in another thread about experiencing the joy of Pascha...it's like I never celebrated Easter before!

The Vespers service this afternoon was wonderfully fun. My parents attended with my family and my Dad had some positive comments about elements that were appealing to him. Of course my boys had a great time with the egg hunt and the BBQ.

Oh, and my 7 yr old knocked over a metal chair in the parish hall as the Fr. was blessing the food...high echoing ceiling made it sound even louder. Thankfully, I wasn't standing near him....could pretend he wasn't my child!:) And Fr. has a wonderous ability to keep going like nothing happened.

Yesterday morning, as I was coming home from Pascha at like 4 or something [I had to leave with my ride], I ran into my Baptist neighbor who is learning Russian and has gone on "missions trips" to Belarus and plans on going back, and I was like, "What are you still doing up?" and he was like, "What are you still doing up?" And I was like, "I'll give you a hint," and started singing, "KHRISTOS VOSKRESE IZ MERTVYKH..." and he was like, "I have no clue what you're talking about," and I was like, "Khristos voskrese?" and he was like, "Still no idea." Well, you've got to get your kicks for living somehow.

Does anyone elses priest have the wonderful capability of answering your questions with a question? It's that counseling part of him, but Father sure makes me think before he chimes in. Sometimes is really frustrating because you just want an answer... but spiritually so much better. There are even questions where he refuses to give me an answer.

Yup. Same here. I read somewhere on a "how to witness to the Orthodox" site something to this effect:

Orthodox like to play word games, answer questions with questions, answer different questions than the ones asked and evade questions to look more spiritual and deep.

Fr. Michael has the wonderful gift of doing just that. He makes me answer my own question and then takes his answer from where I leave off. He also likes to give me wonderfully vague answers which are anything but black and white. As I have said before when I was Catholic nothing was a mystery to me because everything was spelled out with legal precision, Orthodoxy on the other hand is far more vague and rests alot more on mystery.

By the way, Michael, I thought about you the other day, because we have in our parish a polyglot deacon that sometimes likes to take the choir by surprise by starting the ektenial in a unexpected language (like, in english, romanian, etc, he even did it in hebrew once). Fortunately we also have polyglot singers in our choir so we usually have no problem answering "Lord, Have mercy" in the appropriate language.

But last saturday, he did it in german, and we watched ourselves in the choir because none of us knew how to say "Lord have Mercy" in german so we ended up singing "Kyrie Eleison" after a few seconds of hesitation.

I checked for next time, it's "Herr, erbarme dich" and then "Dir, O herr".

Our choir director sometimes likes to improvise in the middle of the service. On Pascha, he asked a visiting choir member to sing "Christ is risen" in Romanian--he basically pointed to her and said "go!". She knows it, but doesn't have it memorized, so she refused.

So Kevin turned to the assembled parish members and said, "Anyone, anyone?" and the Romanian college students sang it for us!

Sometimes we get strange hang-ups at home and we think the calling card service my husband uses has problems. Sometimes when I pick up I hear someone else talking until my husband speaks, another time I was getting wrong # calls while my husband was trying to call me...like our call was getting misdirected to another number and vice versa.

Yes, I missed a much anticipated sleep-over because of that eruption. And the face-masks were embarrassing to a 7th grader.

Of course, I'll never forget the sight of it...we were on our way to church and noticed cars pulling off the road and people pointing. I turned around to look behind us and the cloud filled the view through the back window of the car. Once at church, everyone just stood in the parking lot watching the mountain. Someone had to herd us all in to start the service.

My wife was only in grade school then. Her Mom, whose first language is not English, apparently was running around yelling "mountain exploding, mountain exploding!" at the top of her lungs.

I've actually driven past the Burgerville on Mill Plain by her parents house as she reminded me. Her opinion is the special sauce is just Tartar sauce. She remembers the shakes at the fair though which she said are awesome. She's never been to Goldendale but she dated a guy from Yakima and she said it's out in the sticks.

I was supposed to meet a prospective employer at 3:00 p.m. Went to their office, and was told the person got caught up at a meeting and was asked if I could come back at 5:00 (I'm about to leave.) Why is seeking employment such a complete chore?

My wife was only in grade school then. Her Mom, whose first language is not English, apparently was running around yelling "mountain exploding, mountain exploding!" at the top of her lungs.

I've actually driven past the Burgerville on Mill Plain by her parents house as she reminded me. Her opinion is the special sauce is just Tartar sauce. She remembers the shakes at the fair though which she said are awesome. She's never been to Goldendale but she dated a guy from Yakima and she said it's out in the sticks.

She was curious if the church you go to is near your house or if it's in Portland?

I go to St. Nicholas in SW Portland. Do your in-laws still live in Vancouver? Your family is always welcome at St. Nic's the next time you are in town.

Now would that be the BV on Mill Plain downtown, the Heights, or East? :D
The special sauce is definitely not tartar sauce! Is Outrage!
...but I think it's just mustard, mayo and relish. BV fans are die-hards...

Just got back and it was a pretty weak offer. The only offered a part time job (25 hours max), earliest opportunity to go full-time would be September, low pay, no vacation, and it includes a lot of "mental strength training" and they want to run a bunch of neurological tests on me and try to "enhance" my brain!

I just have a bad feeling about it. My wife wants me to take it, but I don't. This wouldn't be nearly as stressful if we weren't a few weeks away from a baby. :sigh:

Joel, I know exactly how you feel. Since I'm getting married this year, I just had to take a new job in another town, 55 miles away from where I live.

Before that I was working as a free-lance translator - wonderful job, but as any free-lance job, payment varies a great deal from one month to another. :sigh:

Check out my lunch experience from today:

I go to a Greek restaurant and am ordering up a bunch of food for the wife and I (takeout).

Here's the conversation:

Lady: Can I help you?
Me: Yes, I'll get two Cypriana gyros (chicken gyros)
L: anything else?
M: spanakopita
L: what's that?
M: spanakopita?
L: oh, that spinach and cheese thing?
M: yeah
L: anything else?
M: tzatziki
L: huh?
M: cucumber dip
L: anything else?
M: kaitifi
L: what's that?
M: you're not Greek are you?
L: no

This went on and on with just about everything i ordered

I think it was the girl's first day and she'd apparently never had Greek food.

Then when she rang up my order, it came out to $4,588.99

:D

I told her it better be the best meal I've ever eaten at that price. :P

We're almost exactly east of La Center, north of Battle Ground. Is his the Texaco on I-5?

My mom worked for a dry cleaner in Vancouver about 15 yrs ago. The last owner was vietnamese, I think? Was a good shop, but I can't remember the name of the franchise...sudsy, or bubbles or something. I was an oblivious college student sucking up my mother's income at the time.

My father and aunt actually came to the Pachal Vespers, as did my mother. My mother had come to services before, but the other two hadn't. I'm slightly disappointed that they left early. They seem not to understand exactly what Orthodoxy is, and I am not sure how to explain it to them.

Hello again, everyone. My "break" from TAW was a good idea, it turned out. I was much free-er in my participation of services, particular during Holy Week. My focus was more, um, focused? This was such a magical experience for me, I just want to say, as I'm not great at explaining what it was like. I'm sure many of you had an incredible time of worship and other fabulous Orthodox things last week (assuming you are Old Calendar, of course). While I had decided, with my priest's feedback, to put off my Chrismation until I was more sure, and until I had finished reading my assigned Catechism texts, until Pentecost, the immersion of the weekend left me with the strong desire to get Chrismated sooner! So I need to just make sure I do that reading, because I am very certain of doing this, much moreso than I expected.

Okay, I'm sure I could be more precise in saying all of that, but I mostly just wanted to say HI! and share with you that Christ is Risen!

You young'ns are so soft today. My wife and I went to have dinner with friends last night (a night without the kids, oh peace) and we didn't leave until a bit after 1:30am. I then had to drive my niece home after she had so kindly babysat for us so I didn't hit the sack until at least 2:30am. After five hours sleep I was up, having a shower and was at work by 8:30am.

Heh heh, at least you were able to lose sleep by choice. Just wait until you've got your own young'n to look after and you'll soon appreciate why having your child sleep right through the night is such an important milestone in their development. It is of course worth every hour of lost sleep although it is sometimes hard to see that at the time :)

Hi khaleas (Xenia II);)

I'm so glad to hear you're better. :) Both Seraphima and I have been fighting off a bug since Sunday. We didn't get back to work till yesterday. Still felling a bit low, but getting better.

Sunday morning 3:30am coming home from the Midnight DL on the freeway there was still quite a lot of traffic. Suddenly there was a loud rapping sound on the passenger side of the car, like someone knocking. I got such a start that I instinctivly slowed down, wondering to myself if something had fallen off the car.
As we came round a bend about 300 yards ahead there was a car on its roof in the fast lane that I was in. Fortunatly I could change lanes in time and get by OK. I didn't stop as there were other cars already stopped and everyone has a cell to call emergency anyhow.
Needless to say we were quite shaken. And I still wonder about that knocking, as nothing was wrong with our car.

Happy hunting for 'that' dress.

 I know exactly what parents like that, are like.

It's called "boundaries". She needs to work on them. My mother would love to go round and round for hours with me, but if she starts something, I usually give it a few minutes to see if it goes away, and if not, then it's, "Well, gotta go, Mom. Bye."

I know my husband probably would have grabbed the phone out of my hand by this point (an hour?!) and said, "You will not speak to my wife this way. Goodbye." and slammed the phone down. But then, he dislikes my parents and is just waiting for an opportunity to come to my rescue, whether it causes WWIII or not.

Hey all. Nice warm day today. Came home to a breeze. It's one of those anxiety-ridden days, though not intensely so. Some things I worry about for good reasons, others not so much.

I have a prayer rope, which I've used more for holding when I'm stressed than I do for actually saying the Jesus Prayer. I'm not sure why it's a comfort, but it is. Of course, the Jesus Prayer is even more effective, but in certain times it's not really appropriate to stop what I'm doing and say a hundred prayers! And the additional flip side to that is that I could certainly find the time to say a hundred at some point in each day! Certainly a healthy thing to do....

It's called "boundaries". She needs to work on them. My mother would love to go round and round for hours with me, but if she starts something, I usually give it a few minutes to see if it goes away, and if not, then it's, "Well, gotta go, Mom. Bye." We are working on them. But non-Christian immigrants are a difficult lot to deal with. Their culture suggests that obeying parents is the best way to obey God.

I've done that a time or two...and we're up to about WW XIV

Here I am, home from work. We have a situation at our school- a set of parents who are ticked off about something and have begun a murmuring campaign against the school. Murmurers are like snakes in the grass, like poison in the milk, like ants in the sugar, like....well, you get the idea. :)

Here's something cool and totally unexpected: I am going to teach a class on comparative religions next year to the juniors and seniors! Considering the doctrinal differences between me and them (Evangelicals) I am pretty surprised at this turn of events. And happy, as it will be my fifth class and I'll be getting a raise. This is my big chance to present Orthodoxy in a positive light. I can't preach, but I can present it in such a way that they will leave the class at the end of the year with a favorable impression of the Church and not the "dead rituals/working yourself to heaven" concept they have now. So this is very cool and might even be from God!

(Is "Christmating" a valid verb in this sense? Maybe "Converting" would work better. Sounds weird, but that's what I say to non-Orthodox when I talk about my upcoming Chrismation. "I'm converting.")

Hello Rilian.

No, I attend a MP parish called "Notre Dame Joie des affligés et Sainte Geneviève".

But I sometimes go rue Daru, especially to the cathedral's crypt which is so beautiful (services are sung in french in the crypt and in slavonic in the upper chuch). This cathedral (named after Saint Alexander Nevsky) is well known because it is the first orthodox church ever built in France (1861)*.

Have you already been there ?

*I mean, after 1054 AD.

I actually did not visit the cathedral. Last time I was there was at a time when I was still considering conversion to Catholicism.

I was reading an article about the exarchate and it mentioned the upper and lower liturgies, and I thought I remembered you mentioning something about it before.

The apartment complex I was working at just fired the manager and it sounds like just about everyone else (besides the bilingual folk) are getting the boot too. Nothing corporate types do suprise me anymore. I called them late this afternoon to ask a question and was asked if I could come in at 10am tomorrow. I said, "No, my wife is in early labor and the doctor said she doesn't need to be left alone for long periods of time." They then tell me that my status with them is to be determined and that will "be in touch." The working world is the epitome of frustration for me.

I'd like to be able to stop by the Orthodox bookstore down there, but the sidewalk is closed. Re: First Holy Communion:

No we don't do that because all the sacraments are given at once.
However, I've seen girls older than three who dress up in a First Communion dress after they are chrismated and attend the Divine Liturgy for the first time as Orthodox.

Furthermore, in the OCA church that I'm attending now, the girls and boys dress up in their finest on Palm Sunday for the procession where they either carry baskets of flowers to spread on the ground or icons. Most of the children make their first Holy Confession on Lazarus Saturday (the day before Palm Sunday).

Ugh, a piece of tooth just broke off. Looks like I will be needing another crown to go with the one I just had installed a few weeks ago.

Man, when you get to be my age, parts start falling off. :sigh:

There was a joke about senior citizens talking about sans vision, sans teeth, sans hearing, sans smell, sans taste, sans memory. By then, you don't really know what you are missing anyway. So you are happy again.

I wish I could remember it.

Alas, it's all too true. :D

I could not remember the joke that had to do with operations, does anyone know it?

Christ Is Risen!!!

Good day all TAW'ers! It's a lovely fall day, sun shining, and no wind. looks like it will get a bit warmer todaythan we had last week. We might just get an Indian Summer after all.

My sisted called from Canada yesterday. She's an anethetist and gets to work there for two to six months a year. Nice job way to work.

XB !

Good evening, dear TAW elders.

Here, the weather is perfect today . About 20°C, great sun, warm but not too much, a light breeze. Definitely not a day to be at work :sigh: .

Morning my friends!

It's another glorious day! We're supposed to have a very comfortable mid-70s and I'm off school... doesn't mean that I will have time to sit out and enjoy... more like in front of the computer slaving away. One more paper to write, then some reading tomorrow and then it's just four exams and I'm done. YAY!!!

After a short walk to Five Points, I finally have my brand-spankin'-new cell phone working. I was so pleased, I walked over to Loose Lucy's and treated myself to a new dress, some incense, and a few scented votive candles.

I missed going to The Gourmet Shop, but I can save that for tomorrow, I suppose. They have the best croissants. They taste exactly like the ones in all the boulangeries in France.

Hmm...I don't know when the temperature is supposed to hit its peak, but I just checked and it's only 71 right now, and it's 2:40 p.m.
