View Full Version : How much time do you spend in prayer?

Throughout my seminary studies I have made prayer a topic of ongoing research.
I'm going to post this topic in other forums...I'm looking for painfully honest answers. Prayer is something that most of us struggle with - so my question is this: how much time do you spend in prayer?
If you find you do not spend as much time in prayer as you would like please take heart - you are in good company. You'd be surprised to find out how little North American pastors pray...
This prayer time does NOT include time spent in devotions.
So please be as honest as possible.
Thanks for your help. Feel free to add any questions.

I pray as often as possible so I had to vote that there is no specific time. I talk to God all day. :)

I'm sorry Stephan, the click the button didn't fit me. I prayed about how to answer the question. Does that help?

Sure. Thanks for the attempt.

I pray throughout my entire day. I try to keep a constant communication with Jesus as each new situation pops up. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to pray without ceasing. I am a strong believer in this.

I, too, pray throughout the day, but I do not set aside a time of prayer as I should! :(

Don't worry at all...I didn't think you were being rude. I smiled when I read your post. You prayed before answering a survey about prayer...:)
And I sincerely appreciate the attempt. I appreciate that you took the time to post.
Take care.

Not enough; I try to pray for at least 10 minutes a day, but sometimes I write God letters to God instead, because it's so hard not to let the mind wander.

I don't really know what to choose...
I try to pray without ceasing, but I do get down on my knees every day to pray in the Spirit without distractions. (Usually 30min... i don't get much more private time :))
Everyone has different ways of prayer. If I can't keep my mind on prayer I stop, because the quality of my prayer isn't good. I don't feel bad doing that, it could be that I've had a good day praying without ceasing :).

I picked the second option. I'm sure I don't pray as much as I should but sometimes it seems like no words will come. But I talk to the Lord anytime anywhere throughout the day whatever I'm doing.

I too like to be constantly aware and in prayer. Now this doesn't mean that I'm always praying, sometimes I think I need to keep a prayer list. There so many people out there that need prayer. I pray when I'm driving which is a lot. I pray while watching the news, while having a conversation with someone. I don't have a special time either, but i feel guilty about not having a time to pray. I once visited a church and the pastor said that a lady came to him and asked him to pray for her husband. The pastor ask her if she had prayed for him. She said yes. Then he said if you have not prayed all night long for him then he would not pray for him. Not this rubbed me the wrong way a couple of ways. First this man seemed very arrogant to me. Second I would never want him to pray for my husband after he said that to me. Third is it really necessary to pray for so long. It is my understanding you pray, and then thank the lord for his will to be done and know that it will be done.

I choose the one about praying whenever I get the chance, but to tell the truth I try and pray all day. Do you know what I mean? Like when I'm washing dishes, or riding down the road, etc.. I try to talk with Him as much as I can during the day. :)
For my serious prayer time, when I really get down on my knees and spend as much time as possible, is in the morning. All during the day I am so busy that I can't really make it just me and God. So I try and get up an hour earlier so I can spend some time in prayer before I start my day. I find that praying in the morning is better than praying at night for me.
Just thought I'd make a comment on my vote. :) I think this is a really great thread by the way.

Me too, and hopefully for all of my life that'll be my answer.

I tend to pray constantly through-out the day, and i dont really count how long i pray at night, it sometimes lasts a few minutes and i fell alseep, and it sometimes lasts about an hour. Varies really.

I do not pray as often as I should, but I do pray. This is an area I could definitely stand to grow in.
