View Full Version : Malachy Prophecy??

Someone mentioned this prophecy yesterday, but I don't know much about it. An Orthodox friend called me last night and mentioned that he thought it had something to do with a prophecy that there will only be two popes after John Paul II. Is this correct? Is more info about this prophecy available online?

Thanks.

Basil

Okay, I found this link on another thread:

From the article

The prevailing view today is that they are elaborate forgeries, probably perpretrated by a school of Jesuits in the 1600s.

Does that tell you enough?

These are "prophecies" about an institution we believe to be in error, made by someone in that institution after it departed from the East.

It simply floors me that Orthodox Christians would feel it appropriate or necessary to engage in this type of speculation.

The version of the story I read had it that it was a 7th century Irish Monk - which would have been pre-schism. But all the same, I read with caution. One can not and MUST NOT lay store by any prophesy that indicates that X amount of time is left for the world, and that it's demise is imminent.

That was the heresy that I came out of.

Although the time of the end may not be specifically given, which even if we buy into this prophecy, it merely gives an approximation based on how long 2 more popes would reign, not an exact date, are you saying that we don't believe the end isn't imminent? We could obsess over these things, which Christ advises us against, but according to what I have heard several Orthodox people, including St John the Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Fransico said that time is nearing. No dates give, but clear statements have been made encouraging the faithful to be ready.

No Basil, I'm not saying that. We have to be ready every day. Our Lord told us He would return like a theif in the night. But we must not lay store by the fact we may still have 20+ years to go, or something similar.
The fact remains that out earthly sojourn could end at any time, as none of us has a guarentee we'll see tomorrow.
Things in the socio-political arena would suggest that we are close to the end. But that is as far as I'll commit myself.

We should be ready every day. Lots of people have predicted the end, so far, they've all been wrong.

The people who engage in end times speculation are usually in heresy up to their eyeballs.

We know not the time nor the hour.

But the Malachy thing is a Catholic issue, correct? So what do we care. I don't mean that to condemn this thread or anything. I too was curious what this all was. But now i am just curious as to why anyone cares if this is something that has nothing to do witht he OC and even the RCC condemns it. Maybe I'm missing something though.

Confused,

I find it fascinating personally. I have always been interested in things Catholic, since I can remember. And personally, I try to follow all of the end time prophecies made by anyone, and other peculiar phenomena. Remember Oral Roberts life being threatened by Satan himself, unless he raised a few million dollars? Good stuff that was.

After reading the supposed prophecies, I am amazed that Ratzinger would pick Benedict as his pope name. Is he not aware of these?
