Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected the 265th Pope by the College of Cardinals in the first Conclave. He has taken the Reign name of Pope Benedict XVI.

I don't really understand the whole pope thing, but I'm happy for them.

He was the one that I was rooting for. He seems like the best choice out of the ones that I researches. I hope he will be sucessful in guiding the catholic church.:crossrc:

MOD HAT ON
I am re-opening this thread for you all. HOWEVER:
If any of the Lutheran mods see ANYTHING that would be concidered flaming or bashing the Pope or Catholics or anyone at all, the posts will be trashed and the thread will be closed this time for good. CF will NOT tolerate such behavior.
So please guys, let's just be nice okay? Thank you.

I have a question as to the name choice, hopefully someone can answer me and my ignorance here:
I've heard that this Pope will continue much in the same tradition as Pope John Paul II. My question is, if this is true, why not choose John Paul III as his name? Is there some distinction between historical Benedict-names Popes and John Paul II that will come into play? Is it in the level of ecumenical-ness of the Pope or something?
Anyway, I'm happy for my Catholic friends that they've elected a new Pope now. I don't quite get it and all, but I am happy anyway.

I thought it was proper for him to chose another name than John Paul III. It could have been looked upon as though he were trying to "one up" JPII or something.
The name John Paul will always be associated with a specific pope, as it should.
