Experts in source-criticism now know that The Lord of the Rings is a redaction of sources ranging from the Red Book of Westmarch (W) to Elvish Chronicles (E) to Gondorian records (G) to orally transmitted tales of the Rohirrim (R). The conflicting ethnic, social and religious groups which preserved these stories all had their own agendas, as did the "Tolkien" (T) and "Peter Jackson" (PJ) redactors, who are often in conflict with each other as well but whose conflicting accounts of the same events reveals a great deal about the political and religious situations which helped to form our popular notions... In all seriousness, though... he makes a good statement about secular Biblical scholarship (and, sadly, Christian Biblical scholarship in some circles as well).

the Episcopal Church that I used to go to is doing a study over "The Lord of the Rings", "Star Wars", and "Harry Potter"...perhaps it's just me...but shouldn't we be studing the Bible?...

But, are they doing Christian/Biblical themes in those books. . .or not? That can make all the difference.

well...in thier defence yes they are...I gotta admit that Star wars and LOTR don't bother me much, but I just don't like the idea of harry potter...I know it's an innocent childrens story...but I grew up in a household that magic and witchcraft was a big part of so it kinda unsettles me...

See, my church did Christian themes in Harry Potter for Sunday School - it was part of the confirmation class one time, and they had to help teach the adults! I liked that the boys had to do that!
