Can a Christian watch TV. Yes!
But a lot of people choose not to because of the sin that is glorified (i.e. Sex & the City, Desperate Housewives, etc). Also, a lot of time devoted to TV could more beneficially be given to God. :)

I also don't think that TV as such is a problem. But you must be selective in what you watch. Parents especially have to be involved in the choice of what their young kids may watch. But prohibiting it all together isn't necessarily the only answer (although it works well for many).

TV is as bad or good as you make it . I am a Christian and it is perfectly fine for me to watch TV .

I agree,
and also i know Law is done away with, when Jesus made the ultimate sacrafice.
So we can enjoy things such as tv but not to run our lives or to have them above God.
Allways put God first and these things are for all to enjoy.
Kinda borderline in being legalistic if you say no to all tv because you may say it is sinfull.
But if you chose not to watch tv coz you dont like or not interested then fine we all have a choice.
But as far as some tv/movies i would stay away from.
And to say that it is sinfull to watch well dont walk/drive to the local shopping mall or any place because its all full of sin. Which one is greater then ?
All things have a place but God allways should have first place above all things and we should make no idols out of anything!
God Bless

I 'd like to share something with yall that I had put on another thread...OP, I would pray about... God may have a different will for your life..as far as tv goes, I don't see why God would be double-minded on what you watch for some and not for others....

Christian Friends,
As a personal testimony I can tell you that God immediately dealt with me in what I was watching on television a few years ago. I had Dish Network and it was appalling what is on television. God had me cancel this service and I switched to Skyangel. We already had the satellite so we got the service and now all we have on our television is 24/7 Christian programming. I love television...probably more than the average person. It was so hard for me to get that canceled. But my husband gave me a good vision one day. Jesus is with us all the time, right? Well, how about thinking of Him sitting next to you on the couch next time you have a program on this would not honor God. I personally (key word here) feel it is wrong to say that your children cannot watch the same things "you" do. Think about this: If it is not good for your child, why is it good for you? I also think it is weak to say "well, it doesn't bother me"...well, just b/c watching something with profanity or sexual content and violence does not bother you does not make it right. I encourage you brothers and sisters, ask God today what He would have you do with your entertainment life in regards to music, televison, movies, etc.
I also encourage you to bookmark the following website:
www.kids-in-mind.com (http://www.kids-in-mind.com/)
This is an awesome website that has thousands of movies listed with discrete detail on which and how much profanity is used, what type of sexual content is in the movie, and what acts of violence are shown.
Be strong in the Lord...surely it is not just for Ginny that God would have his daughter in Christ do such a thing. Being a Christian isn't for the weak.
Ask yourself this: If God told you today that you should not watch secular television ever again, could you do it?

*Heck no! No TV, books, music, etc.
(*note sarcasm)
However, as others indicated, you have to be selective in what you do watch, read and listen to. If it's trash, turn it off.

BINGO!!! You have to determine for yourself as each man does. Personally, I have been feeling like T.V. is a distraction for me. It causes me to lose focus and miss some good prayer times. I need to cut back on the tube time that is for sure.
The Apostle Paul said 'all things are permissible, but all things aren't profitable." ?This is where you as an individual have to decide on TV. Is is profitbable?

I don't think tv is bad. Like some of the others have said, parents need to be careful about what their children watch. But there are some great educational programs on tv for children to watch.

Like everything in this world... It is all about how we handle it. There are some wonderful programs available through TV... and there are some absolutely horrible programs as well.
In general, most advertisers are programing the masses with inappropriate behavior and basically brainwashing us... You just have to be careful what you expose yourself to and realize that there is a secular slant to most of it.

TV is amoral - it does not have any intrinsic morality to it. Like money. It's how you use it - for good or for evil.
To not have a TV by choice in the house is your choice, but that's being legalistic and akin to throwing the baby with the bath water.

Good stuff .
You know , your writing that quote brings something up ... have you noticed that some people ( a great deal of people , actually ) will quote that in such a way as to say that anything that is not profitable is not permissible ? No , they don't say it ... they imply it by asking ... "Is it profitable ?" To be clear , I am not saying that you are doing so . But , I was always wondering what it was about people using that sentence that bothered me . Now , I understand . Thanks .

There are far worse things than watching TV in my opinion :)

I don't think that TV is necessarily evil. I watch quite a bit of it myself -- more than I should. However, perhaps I should pray about giving it up and seek out God's will. There are many better ways I could spend my time than watching TV -- as morally uplifting as Stargate is. :D
David Wilkerson was the young pastor of a small town church when he decided to take the two hours in the evening he used to watch TV and pray instead. In this prayer time, almost immediately, God spoke to him and told him to do something rather bizarre -- to go to New York city and try to help some gang members who were on trial for murder. He is now pastor of Times Square Church and has a huge ministry to teen drug addicts and gang members. All because he shut off that TV and opted to pray instead.
Now, God may not be calling everyone to do this same thing. Still, it just might bear some thought. What could God do with you, if your mind weren't so cluttered with the world?

I work in tv, so I can't say that it's entirely bad because it pays my bills and I enjoy my job. It's all in what you allow yourself to watch. Yes, there are things on tv that I avoid letting my eyes see and my mind think about. I am selective in the types of movies I watch too for those reasons. I know what I can handle and what I cannot. I have to ask myself if what I am watching is causing me to stumble, preventing me from doing my Bible Study, or fellowshiping with others. If it is, I have to reassess what I'm doing. It's the same with the internet. I don't want to sit in front of a computer all day either because it can prevent me from more important things in my life.
So, I'd say it's different for each person.

NO ... Absolutely Not... All Christians should stay inside at all costs in a small room praying for the end to come. We should not be aware of our world at all!!! Please for your own safety dont watch TV!!!! :) Just kidding!!!! Yes they can but you need to screen what you watch.

One thing that appears yet to have been spoken of is the indoctrinal nature of television...its the main way we all become consumers...hoked at an early age...I agree with the consensus of this thread...intelligent viewing which is thought out in reflection to our faith...but braoden things...I think that as Christians we need to produce more and better Christian programming and Christian in key positions of influence need (politicians and those making the descisions to do with what goees on air, programme investors ect) need to allow these programmes to be shown while steadily curtailing the filth, the indoctrination that presently predominate tv!

My parents screened what I watched as a child, and I screen what I watch as an adult. :)
If only I had them to tell me when to forgo this message board, perhaps I'd be better off? ;)

I think t.v. is a blessing from God; along with my radio, car, microwave, toaster, etc. It's just an object. How I use it is more the issue. Trash in, trash out, in other words.

People who don't watch it much tell me how corrupt cable tv is. I consider it so much more wholesome that network television. There are entire channels dedicated to history, science, authors speaking, congressional sessions, children's education, news-news-news, weather, and on. Sometimes my kids run across documentaries they've watched in school. Even the cartoons are more educational.

Yes, you wouldn't hardly believe that less than twenty years ago that channel was Christian Broadcasting Network...(The network became ABC Family after it was sold a few times)
I think that television is fine for Christians to watch if they watch appropriate things. Another words just screen what they watch. However, if you get Skyangel you never really have to screen what you watch!

Definitely screen your viewing, and look at the Tv guide rather than surfing channels. I check things out for "is watching this movie going to cause problems for me?" "Is it clean/sexual/profane in nature? I don't watch horror or violence or anything with sexual innuendos. God is calling us to a pure life with Him, and we need to be discerning as to what we take in with our eyes and ears.

I finally broke the TV habit. I don't consider it so much a sin (although it can be) as it is a timewaster.
I no longer watch sports and am amazed at the time I wasted on such things.
I used to be a news junkie and no longer watch network news.
I still read the news for 15 minutes in the morning and thats it. It's amazing how much more time I have to read, go for walks, visit with family etc. I say...junk the tv unless you have absolutely nothing else to do in your life.
This forum is better than tv, although, if you aren't careful it can become a timewaster as well.

Legalism dictates what to do or not do with some Christians. We have to know what the Lord wants us to do as individual people.Of course that does not mean to use our freedom to sin and if that thing that you watch causes you to sin..then don't watch it! Then sometimes when your in the middle of a great movie, and all of a sudden there is that 'word' that is not accepted in the home..once that happens,I don't care how good the movie is,I will not tolerate that word in my own home, for it is vile, and it some how makes me grieve. So,I normally know when to shut it off.
