I realize I don't take an exceptionally active part in STR, mainly because I know I'm in a minority here and prefer to not rock the boat. But, I just needed to post this and STR is the right place for it...
I don't know how many of you know this, but a couple of months ago we took in a recovering drug addict. We've been working with him to overcome his demons, helping him get his life in order. One major stipulation of living here with us has been that he attend church with us, every Sunday, no exceptions.
Before the sermon, we always pause for announcements. Last Sunday the priest mentioned Synod coming up in June and that the parish still needed at least one more layman to attend. This young man stood up and has asked to be allowed to attend. He has also decided he wants to go through confirmation and formally join our faith.
I'm sitting here right now, eavesdropping I suppose, on my husband and this young man in the living room. Hubby is teaching him about layreading and explaining the BCP to him. He has asked to layread. So here I sit, full of something I can't quite put a name to. It isn't pride; it's more of a joy ...joy that we've been able to make a difference for this young man and elation that our efforts are leading someone to Christ in a very personal manner. I sit here listening to my husband as he explains the Latin, and yes I do feel pride; pride that I am married to such a wise and dedicated man who is already learning to tend the sheep though he is still studying for his ordination.
Sometimes, those small things no one knows we notice mean so much. Tonight, I will be sure to thank God for bringing such a wonderful man into my life - for blessing me with a husband full of wisdom, and a heart of service.
