2 Timothy 3:16-17 NET Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17) that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work.

That seems to be a popular notion but I highly disagree with it . With respect to the writings , there are no old and new testaments . Also , whenever the Scriptures are referred to in the newer writings , they actually refer to the older writings . So , the writings that people claim to be more important themselves claim that the others are more important .

I don't see any of the writings more important than any of the other writings .

Everything in the bible, even the genealogies, can reveal powerful truths to you.
But I wouldn't give an unbeliever just the OT, for example. Seeing what Jesus did will always be more important than knowing the name of Jebuzadebbelim's brother-in-law.

Soooo many good nuggets in the old testement. My personal favorite is Ezekiel 36:25-29

..."You will be my people and I shall be your God" verse 28

Makes me wanna praise Him.

Also, so many examples of men (and women) who truly loved the Lord. Yip, would not bypass the OT. I do spend more time in the NT though.

The Old Testament is very important also. The New Testament is the fulfillment of the Old, and some passages in the Old Testament can be very meaningful.

Christ also recognized the importance of the Old Testament, as he quoted it often.

Psalm 22 gives us a taste of the New thousands of years before...

The old testament is the history behind Jesus Christ. It has many relevant life rules for the world today.

Think of it like this

The new testament in the old concealed
The old testament in the new revealed

The new testament explains and refers to many prophecies and great men and women from the old testament. Why not read about God's amazing grace and mercy to all those believers in the old testament and come to know His awesome power.

Happy reading!

This is actually quite simple.

Jesus is revealed in the New Testament.

What Bible did He read?

I think you begin to appreciate the themes of the whole bible more when you read both the Old and New Testament. It gives you a deeper understanding of what Christ means and there is a lot of foreshadowing of Jesus in the Old Testament stories and prophesies.

As my goal this year I'm trying to read the bible from the front to the end. I'm really enjoying it :) I'm in 2 Kings now!

In the USA, especially, we have learned especially since the '60s, to toss out the "old" and get on with the "new." The "old" is tired, obsolete, useless, and bettered by the "new." We see this in architecture, fashion, and the way we treat people. We also see it in the teachings of the church, when they toss out the old -- whether practices, people, or ideas -- in preference for the "new," even when the "new" is inferior. I am all for new ideas, but not at the expense of the better. We have done this for centuries, and I am sure this is why recent generations eat up the "new testament" and discard the "old."

However, the so-called "old testament" was written by Jews, as was the "new." When they wrote the "new," they never even expected it to be accepted as Scripture, for their only Scriptures were what they call today the "old." When the writer penned "All Scripture is given by inspiration of G-d and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction . . . ," he was writing about what is called "old" today. He did not considered it "old" as in no longer usable, useful, etc., but he expected the reader to use it "for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction."

Unfortunately, as a part of replacement theology, the single Word of G-d was divided into two parts, calling one "old" and the other "new." It was further divided when people began putting out little books called "new testaments." Even the words "testament" or "covenant" are misused in their naming. How unfortunate that believers have swallowed those errors, introduced by a man known by many for his being apostate, for centuries.

When one reads only the "new testament" and ignores the "old," that one only has a tiny picture of the whole story. The first Scriptures were all about our L-rd. They are His Word, and they introduced Him and His expectations. The "new" testament is merely commentary on what the "old" teaches. Unfortunately, because the "old" has been ignored by church, seminaries, and teachers, relegated to the place of "obsolete," many poorly-created traditions continue in the church, from the teachings to the traditions and their suppositions. Many, many ideas the church is mistaken about would be cleared up, if they would study the early Sciprtures.

It's ok to read the NT only, but I mean that doesn't always quench our thirst for more... it's always great to read about the history and prophecies and men and women... wow... there's so much in the OT that would really get your attention, like Jonah & the big fish, Elijah, Esther, and more... it's just amazing.

The bible is good, but remember it's just dead words if God doesn't reveal it to you.
Besides, God can speak to you and teach you through anything, movies, other books, dreams, you name it.

Seek and you will find what you're looking for, whether it's a strict God, commandments, logic fallacies, ammo for arguments, whatever.

Throw out the Old Testament for the sake of the New, huh? Well... I heartily disagree... And these are the reasons why...

- There are so many allusions found in the New Testament that refer to passages found in the Old Testament, which would have no basis or meaning if that were taken away.

- The New Testament is BASED ON the Old Testament. Without the presence of the Old Testament, the New Testament would lose a lot of its meaning.

- If we abandon everything that is "old" for the sake of the "new", what's to stop us from forsaking all of the Bible for "new" revelation that God is "revealing" today?

- Who likes picking up a sequal without reading the book that came before?

- The only scriptures that the first generations of Christians had were the Old Testament... so Paul's AND Peter's appeal to study and know the Scriptures is talking about the Old Testament.

- Any faith that denies the validity of any part of the scriptural canon, whether Old or New Testaments, is bound to be shallow and irellevant...
