Well, I'm number 3!
Welcome back Matrona!!
I'm fasting zero food today, because I want to attend Pre-Sanctified tonight. Our Parish holds them Tuesdays and Thursday evenings. With a lot of prayer, I'll get by.
I'm praying for all of you, and BTW:-
Blessed St Patrick's Day. St Patrick, pray for us!!
That was just for you Suzannah.;)

Why's Suz the only one getting wished Happy St. Padraig's day?! There're other proud Celts on TAW, too! I'm also looking forward to next 1 Feb, 1 March, 16 May, 26 May, and 9 June. If anyone's wondering why those particular days, they're the commemorations of the Ss. Brigid of Kildare, David of Wales, Brendan the Navigator, Augustine of Canterbury, and Columba of Iona.
Anyway, Happy St. Padraig's Day, all!

While we're speaking about Christianity in the Isles, here's a story I simply love about St. Gregory of Rome:
'While the Saint was yet a monk, he happened upon a slave trader selling three young boys in a Roman marketplace.
He exclaimed, "Alas! Alas! That such bright young faces should be the slave of an inward darkness. So beautiful are they and yet their minds are sick and without God's grace." Going to the trader, he asked from which nation they came.
"They are Angles," answered the man.
"Yes, indeed," the Saint replied, "they have the appearance of angels and they should be co-heirs of the angels in Heaven. From what province do they hail?"
"From Deira," said the slave trader, speaking about what is now Northumberland.
"From Deira?" answered the Saint. "Then indeed they should be saved from God's wrath and called to the dignity of Christ. Who is their King?"
"Aella."
"Then," said Gregory, "must Alleluia be sung in Aella's land."'
Holy Saints of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, pray for us sinners!

I don't want to get all political, but does anyone recommend a reliable and possibly objective (I know, good luck) "truth about St. Patrick" type of web site or book? I only ask because I have been wondering exactly how he managed to convert an entire nation to Christianity. Not looking for scandal, just objective history.
And maybe St. Patrick is just one fellow we'll never know much beyond legend...that was an awful long time ago, yes?

I hope you feel better soon! I think we've all been sick here at TAW in the past few weeks.
I was supposed to get out of here last night but that wasn't going to happen. I was lucky because my contact at Icelandair bent over backwards to switch my flight. I need to write her supervisor a very nice letter. So tonight it's off for me and in an upgrade to business class  it should be a nice flight. I hope they can whip up something decent for a vegetarian meal but I'm gonna bring some granola bars just in case (for some reason I think lenten 'suffering' (with lack for a better word) and suffering with plane food have very little in common).

Stephanida,

My priest gave a very touching homily on Forgiveness Sunday (last Sunday). Father explained that forgiveness, doesn't mean you have to excuse the wrong someone committed against you. You don't have to justify it or absolve it--they will still be guilty of the sin they committed against you. Forgiveness, is giving up vengeance to God, letting go, and moving on. It would probably be better if you talked to a priest about this, but in the meantime, you might find it helpful to read about a lady named Corrie Ten Boom. She was a Dutch Christian who sheltered Jews during the Holocaust, and she was sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp. Especially helpful for you, I think, would be the anecdote she told about, after being released, running into one of the guards who had been particularly cruel, and how she dealt with the encounter.

First, be assured of my prayers for you. Secondly, sometimes (and I am not saying this is your case) hating just feels so good, it takes the edge off us when we feel victimimized and there is nothing else we can do. That being said, we have to to realize that hate in its essence is self-destructive, it is the the gift that keeps on giving as it eats us alive (demonic wouldn't you say?). So we have to realize that as children of a God who sincerely desires our well being, we must take care of our physical and mental health and let the hate go, little by little as best you can...knowing, in the long run, it is best for you, best for your family, your worship community, and the world. That is a gift (and it may entail much work) you can give to yourself AND to God.
God bless you.

Well, to be truthful, St. Patrick wasn't the only missionary in Ireland. He was the greatest of those in the north of the isle, but there were several missionaries working in Leinster in the southeast before he arrived in Ulster.
I've picked up a book at HalfPriceBooks titled Celtic Saints: Passionate Wanderers by Elizabeth Rees, a Roman nun. It's actually a very interesting read, and it touches on the Celtic church in all of its incarnations, be they in Erin, Scotland, Wales, England, Man, or elsewhere. The ISBN's 0-500-01989-4, if you want to hunt for it.
Here's some quotes from the book about the status of Christianity in Eire before Padraig:
We know of five missionaries who worked in southeast Ireland in the early fifth century before the arrival of Patrick: Ciarán of Saigir, Ibar and his nephew Abbán, Ailbe of Munster and his friend Déclán of Ardmore. [p. 24]
Palladius was the first bishop to be sent from Rome to Ireland [in 431].... Palladius came to Ireland, accompanied by three bishops from Gaul, Secundinus, Auxilius and Iserninus. According to tradition, Palladius lander near Arklow in Wicklow; his three fellow bishops have dedications in the sorrounding area, each near a tribal stronghold. [T]heir monasteries [were] at Dunslaughlin (meaning 'domhnach of Seachnal' or church of Secundinus), Killossy ('cell of Auxilius') and Aghado, which means 'field of the two yews' and was evidently selected for a church because it was already a holy place. [pp. 26, 27]
Patrick lived from c. 390 - c. 461 and worked in the north of Ireland, with his base at Armagh in Ulster.
Just a wee bit o' info on Celtic missions.
And, yes, I was drooling like one of Pavlov's dogs when Mike said he intends on writing a Celtic-style icon of St. Padraig. I want one.
Later, everyone. Got to get ready for Canon.

We had copies of the Canon tonight so we could read along...that helped me a lot. I'm not good at following along just aurally...my mind drifts all over the place. I truly felt some of the sorrow evident in the writing. Unfortunately, I had trouble following along with the story of St. Mary of Egypt, so I should read it again on my own.

WOW I disappear for a few days and you go and change taverna on me again!
Hi everyone, if I stick to my guns you shouldn't be seeing anything of me again until Pascha as I've been spending way too much time on the forums and Lent seems like a good time to make a break. I'm only posting today because I've been away from the computer since Saturday so I'm giving myself a day's grace :P
I've actually just come back from spending three days on Mount Athos. I accompanied Nektarios from OC.net on his way to the monastery of Philotheou, and after two days there I walked four and a half hours to the monastery of Simonopetra on the other side of the peninsular. The monks at Philotheou had suggested I take the minibus to Karyes and from there the bus to Dafni and walk from there, but I wanted to walk. A third of the way there I was regretting not heeding their advice as there was still half a metre of snow covering the roads up over the ridge which made the walking absolutely exhausting. I had to take a break every fifteen steps or so and wait for my pulse rate to slow down a bit. I also added about half a hour to my walking time by missing where the path to the monastery left the road. Unfortunately it was all downhill from there so when I finally figured I had missed the turn it was all uphill until I found the path. All in all it was wonderful. Roughly seven to eight hours are spent in church each day with Liturgy, the Hours and Vespers. I met some lovely monks including a German, Father Yelasios (his name means "laughing" or "joyful", very aptly named) and another, Father Isidore who was born blind and became a monk at the age of forty, plus I was able to venerate the incorrupt right hand of St John Chrysostom and the right hand of St Mary Magdalen which is not only still soft and supple, but maintains body temperature!
On that note I wish you all a blessed Lent and joyous Pascha. The next time we meet we will be shouting Christos Anesti
God bless,
John.

Welcome to Helsinki Jennie!!! It's so beautiful here, lots of snow and sunshine!!
Yup, if it could make up it's mind if it was going to snow, be sunny... cuz it's going to be cold no matter how you turn it. My mom has an old house so it's darn chilly here too... oh well, give me a day or two.
Kolya, Nokialand is fine! COLD (wait, did I say that already :D ). I'm not really jetlagged with all that sleep but I'm just a bit tired.
Of course with the changes to my ticket they forgot my vegetarian food. :sigh: . But I tried my best to avoid the meat, but I did have some dairy. I figured that was the lesser of the two evil and I had to eat something (the granola bars weren't going to cut it). And mom had fixed some cheese of course when I got here (she was trying really hard, no meat or anything, but she missed the cheese part... well, can't break her heart when she sees me so rarely). I of course felt quite bad and spent a good while praying after dinner. She eats mainly veggies too so it shouldn't be too hard to keep up with lenten foods. And, on the other hand, lenten food is not supposed to cause crisis and fights either.
Tomorrow we're going to see my grandmother and Sunday I'm going to get to church. I'm going to try to make a stop at our 'local monks' (it's not an official monastery, but they live according to monastic rules) as they are having a bake/food sale on Sunday too. Plus they have bortsch soup for take-out. :yum: .
Anyways, that's about all here... I'll be ready to come back to the US in a few days.

Hi everyone! I went to Confession today, which is always a blessing. The more I go, the better I feel. Good news- I managed to convince my S-I-L to go to Confession! She's cradle Orthodox and in her mid-30's, but has never gone! Apparently there was a rumor going around when she was growing up that someone once hid in the choir loft and listened to all the Confessions then ratted about what everybody had confessed. That was it! My M-I-L never went after that, and my S-I-L never went at all. My husband went once when he was 12, then didn't go again until right before we were married.
Actually, I guess a lot of folks at my parish will not go to our priest because they don't want him to know their sins. Our priest is a great guy, too. Very compassionate. So he's actually arranging for an OCA priest to come and hear confessions one Saturday this Lent so folks can confess to someone they don't know. My S-I-L has agreed to confess to the OCA priest.
I guess a lot of folks do not ever go...I've heard folks say that all our sins are forgiven when we get annointed on Holy Wednesday, so Confession isn't really required. Our priest is constantly preaching about the need for Confession and really focusing on that this Lent. God bless him, he has his work cut out for him!
On another note...I just finished a terrific book: "Waiting for Snow in Havana", by Carlos Eire. Awesome!

If you look below at my sig, you'll see a photo of the Centro Gallego in Havana. This was the center for Spaniards from Galicia...my great grandfather used to be the President of the Centro Gallego. His father was the last Governor of the province of Havana for the King of Spain prior to Cuban Independence. His portrait used to hang in the Center, but I'm pretty sure Fidel took it down...
[A book I just finished deals with a prominent Havana family who lost everything in the Revolution and about formerly affluent folks having to adapt to starting over with nothing in the USA...so I spent a few moments wondering what my life would have been like growing up in the old family mansion in Havana (in a Fidel-free world) rather than pinching pennies in Miami. Since than line of thinking cannot be constructive, I switched to thanking my lucky stars that my family is here and free instead of cutting sugarcane for the Revolution.]
I'm not sure why I'm telling you this, guess I'm just feeling sentimental. In a similar vein, I finally got my grandfather's Diploma from the University of Havana. He left it to me when he died, and it's been in my mother's closet. Long story short: she got around to digging it out of the closet and now it is hanging up near my computer...

My friend who came from the GOA told me similar stories. I'm glad to hear your priest is encouraging private confession, I think it's really important. St. Nectarios wrote a great little book just on repentance and confession. I don't think the Great and Holy Wednesday forgiveness thing would have flown with him.

A book I just finished deals with a prominent Havana family who lost everything in the Revolution and about formerly affluent folks having to adapt to starting over with nothing in the USA.....
I wrote a long reply to this and managed to get it wiped out. :(
Anyway, my SIL and her family were just such affluent folks who fled from Cuba to US in the 60's when she was early teen. Her father was a lawyer, and her Mom had always had servants same with my SIL. Fortunately, the father made a successful career transition here. Today, the mother, now widowed and elderly, lives alone and does her own housework, "little by little", she says.
My SIL tells of how she had to go to work from the time they arrived in US. She did well though, has a graduate degree, and teaches high school Spanish. But the family went through many painful struggles and tragedies.
Sadly, my SIL and her Mom as well, have become very unhappy with the state of RC in US, to the point of rarely attending anymore. When Mel's movie "Passion" came out she told of how it reminded her of the traditional Catholic customs in Cuba (before Castro).
On a recent visit, we watched a video of Cuba. The scenery was really beautiful and unspoiled by the commercialism of most popular vacation spots. Castro's isolation of Cuba had some benefits.
Oh, I love black beans, chicken and rice dish (can't recall the name), and fried plantains....yummmmy!
I have a cassette tape of the Divine Liturgy in Spanish, recorded in Cuba, that I've been planning to copy and send to my SIL. I found an English/Spanish translation on a website and can follow along.
Senor ten piedad!
That's the extent of my Spanish. Anyway, just wanted to share some Cuban memoirs. :)

ps. I just love my SIL, she talks a mile a minute with strong Cuban accent!

Wiffey, if you're ever in Philly you should go to Alma de Cuba in center city. The food is awesome, though it's kind of a fancy restaurant. Normally I just like Mom and Pop type places for some simple Palomilla.
We moved out of Miami when I was a kid, but my I still love cuban food. My sister was telling me about a place in Ybor City she went to that we're going to try and find when we're in Tampa in a couple of months.

Thanks for the encouragement about confession everyone. I'm actually terrified of my first one, before I am chrismated...I think because I don't want to face up to how sinful I actually am! Of course the Canons have been preparing me. I made it to the first two this week. I can't remember when they're doing the third and final one. Most likely I will miss the daytime services on Holy Thursday and Friday, which makes me sad, but I will certainly be there in the evenings.
I'll be talking to Father tomorrow about this, but if anyone knows a good place to look at regarding fasting challenges, I would be most grateful. Hmmm...I seem to recall a Lenten link thread on TAW...

Father Peter Gilquist used to do them at the annual Labor Day Evangelical Conference. It was a Holy Reconciliation Service. We all would gathered together for Vespers and then after Vespers, he would deliver a call to repentance (altar call) and encourage us to visit a priest for confession (and there were about 4 to 6 priests available). It was a good old fashioned altar call, except that instead of people going up and privately telling a minister their sins, they would go to a priest and receive absolution. Those Protestants don't know what they are missing until they attend one of our genuine altar calls.

Quick question about communion and days and timing: there is a liturgy Saturday morning, if one received at the Friday presanctified, can one receive on Saturday? I'm asking because the presanctified is, after all, vesperal, so it's really Saturday, hence the question.

I went to the parish where I was Chrismated and there was a reader tonsured by Vladyka so Presanctified which began at 6 was not over until 7:30ish and then afterward they had everyone over the house of one of the parishoners and they insisted that I come over and eat with them! It is so humbling to see how much I am loved by my friends.

As I move closer to Chrismation, I continue to have "big faith questions." I worry about asking them in front of other catechumens, lest I create for them an unnecessary faith crisis or doubt. Has anyone else dealt with this? Do you think I'm being overcautious?

I had a great time today. We got me a new mid size suitcase so I don't have to travel with my 'beached whale' all the time. We were going to go look in the local Orthodox church there but they had a funeral going on so that didn't work out. Grandma also remembered that at some point while she lived in Switzerland she had bought an icon from some antique store. I've got to take a picture of it... I can't really figure it out, it's pretty old but it doesn't look typical... very tiny details. But when I get a chance I'll post a picture. Maybe our 'resident icon guru' can help me out...
Tomorrow I'm going to DL. I was trying to get mom to go with me but she of course came up with a zillion other things she 'needed' to do.
Anyways, it's darn cold here (the wind mainly)... Gonna go heat up now!

DL was interesting... I guess the Orthodox around here come out of the woodworks when Pasha gets near. There was a few hundred at church this morning plus the normal Fathers serving and two visiting Fathers. It was crowded... plus it looked like they were having more of a grand old time at the altar exchanging pleasantries than serving the Liturgy. Oh well... Dang, and I totally missed the info that they had Liturgy in English at the same time... I'm really losing a lot of my Finnish but going to Liturgy isn't the best way to keep it up. I found myself missing the Russian...:sorry: And since we only have a Father and some Readers I had a hard time following along with the Deacons etc.
Hah, and I got my mom inside an Orthodox church today! Not for service but for the bakesale they had at the monastery. If you can help me out, I would appreciate it....I saw a programme on the History channel called "Last of the Tsars" and it had a bio of him. Rasputin wasn't even Orthodox. He was a member of a sect called the "Skopsty" that believed something to the effect of "To be saved you have to be forgiven of a lot of sins, so you should sin a lot." Later in his life he visited holy places (I'm thinking Jerusalem and Mt Athos, but I may be wrong) and gained a following in Russia even among some clergy.
From what I have read, the movement a few years ago to canonize him along with Ivan the Terrible was a set-up by non-believers who wanted to make the Russian Orthodox Church look stupid. There were headlines like "Russian Church may schism over whether to canonize Rasputin" as if any bishop supported the idea. Patriarch Aleksy was very clear that there was no way either of them would be canonized, but the damage was already done. I've had to explain to several folks that there was never "a movement within Orthodoxy to canonize Rasputin" any more than the existence of the "Orthodox Cathedral of John Coltrane" in San Fransicso is a movement within Orthodoxy to canonize Coltrane.

I found myself missing the Russian...:sorry: And since we only have a Father and some Readers I had a hard time following along with the Deacons etc.
khaleas, are you sure it wasn't a city (or state)-wide Sunday of Orthodoxy combined Liturgy this morning? It's the custom in many places in America for all the churches in a given area to have a big Divine Liturgy (or sometimes Vespers) together on this Sunday. Tonight every Orthodox church in my whole state (all six of us, woohoo!) are meeting at the big Greek church in Louisville. Maybe your church is the "big church" in your area, and that might account for all the strangers.

 I heard something about a sect called Chylysty (probably misspelled) that elected one male member to be "Christ" and one to be "Mary" that had really perverted beliefs and their meetings usually ended up as orgies.... Anyway, I heard that Rasputin was connected with that, which doesn't surprise me since he was called "The Debauched One".

The "Skoptsy" or "Castrati", were another sect in the Nineteenth Century Russia. I'll give you three guesses what they were into. From what we know, we can be pretty sure that Rasputin never followed that.
However, the region of eastern Siberia where Rasputin was from was notorious for spawning some odd heretical movements. For instance, the "Brotherhood of Red Death" which were into mass suicide, the Dukhobortsy, or "Spirit Wrestlers" and others. AFAIK, that part of Russia still contains a lot of Old Believers, "Red Dragon"-type schismatics, and others.
Some people who knew Rasputin suggested he was a Khylyst, or "Flagellant", but I don't think this has been resolved conclusively. Correct me if I am wrong.
Some Russian Orthodox (mostly vagante or schismatics) do believe that Rasputin and Ivan IV were saints, but this is very much a fringe opinion and is treated as such. The celebrated, talented and opinionated folk singer and extremist Zhanna Bichevskaya has come out in favor of the canonization of Ivan IV. I don't know what she thinks of G.E. Rasputin.
The flowering of weird heresies among the Russian peasantry is often taken as evidence of a survival of paganism by those inclined to look for imaginary pagans. In my opinion, since none of these heresies can be traced to any antiquity, it is more likely that such heresies were a response to the end of medeival Russia and the reforms of Nikon. To the peasantry, it seemed like the world was coming to an end. Similar movements could be seen in 16th century central Europe, with rise of Protestantism and the end of the Catholic monopoly on belief.

Positive, it's Palmsunday here in Finland (I'm back here visiting family) as they are on the western calender. But I think it's the case everywhere, there was just A LOT more people than last time I went.
I wish I could have been there for the pan-Orthodox services because it was also a huge anniversary for the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Baltimore.

I hear you about home-schooling. I am a teacher, and I cannot stand the moral climate of the public and Catholic (so-called separate) schools. It is beyond morally lax, and moving into morally bankrupt and evil. I cannot see how Christians could find it permissible to allow their children to be taught in such a climate. Do we not believe that if we train up a child in the way he should go, when he is old he will not depart from it? What then happens when we allow the State to train our children? When we have other choices? What a judgement we will be reaping!
I teach in a private Christian school... one that uses rigorous teaching methods (the ones abandonned by Dewey and his ilk). It would be a good alternate to home-schooling in that day when you find yourself with children of your own.
Feeling for you, hearing your pain, remembering the horrors of my childhood,

I've seen a few Catholic Schools... I think it REALLY depends on what school you look at. I would send my kid to a good Catholic School (assuming it is christ-centered and good academically)... at least a grade school. That's just me. Obviously a parent needs to do whta they feel is best for their child. It's surely not one size fits all.

Right. In speaking to Stephanida, I am touching on a common Canadian experience. For the most part Catholic schools are funded publicly in Canada, and so follow government-ordained curricula. This is not so bad, as a strong Christian voice can mediate whatever curriculum is currently being trumpeted by the powers that be. However, in the past 40 years Catholic schools have become nigh-unto spiritually destitute. There are, of course, exceptions. But in Canada, the exceptions are very hard to find.
Home schooling and private schooling are on the rise as never before.

Regarding private Christian schools, if you are Orthodox and want your kids to remain Orthodox, don't send them to an Evangelical school. We have 3 Orthodox girls who attend our school, and I overhear the staff trying to figure out how to get them to the youth group all the time. Their beliefs are considered inconsequential. Among the staff, even more than among the other students, the whole idea is to get them away from the dark spooky isolated Orthodox Church and out into the light where they are free to love Jesus.
If you remember me asking for prayer a few weeks back because I said I "had words" with my principal, this was the subject we had words about.

No one would be at all offended! And if you are serious about becoming Orthodox, that is, if you really planning to convert, no one here would mind if you changed your faith icon to Orthodox. Many of us here used the Orthodox icon before we were chrismated into the Church.

No one would be at all offended! And if you are serious about becoming Orthodox, that is, if you really planning to convert, no one here would mind if you changed your faith icon to Orthodox. Many of us here used the Orthodox icon before we were chrismated into the Church.
That's great, thanks! Yes, as far as I know ... at the least I'll be studying thoroughly, and plan on a formal study for certain, plus go to some services. When I actually go then I will change the faith icon. I just have been studying on my own temporarily until I'm able to get to the Orthodox Church. There are physical reasons I cannot go at this time, otherwise this would have already begun. :holy:

Say, I've been wondering if it would be okay if I bought the gold Orthodox cross in the special items section, and equip it? I mean, since I am not truly Orthodox (yet), would it offend any here if I did this? Thought it would be best to ask this, first. :)
Anyone notice the wooden Orthodox cross is backwards? The lower bar is tilted the wrong way. I would buy one but it bugs me that it's "wrong".

"He's not pining! He's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! He's expired and gone to meet his maker! He's a stiff! Bereft of life, he rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed him to the perch, he'd be pushing up the daisies! His metabolic processes are now history! He's off the twig! He's kicked the bucket, he's shuffled off his mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!!"

Holding down the fort!!
Yup, still in Finland... will hang out here until the 28th. No Chrismation tho... :sigh: but I'm ok with it I guess. I'll try to be back here in May so maybe it will work out then. Otherwise I can get Chrismated over Pasha.
Mom leaves today (she actually came with me to look at wedding gowns yesterday... and I have to start looking again, didn't like the one I thought I would) so no more Orthodox jokes... . I guess I have to deal with a few after Thurs again when she is back. I'm going to try to make pre-sanctified tomorrow morning. I've been bad and not going to church everyday, but I am still kind of off my schedule and I want to spend time with my family too. Getting ready to go back home though... this is only fun for so long.
OK, I do have one big purchase to make... my Orthodox cross.

And I also found this...

It's a praying Theotokos. It's a replica of one they have found from the crusades from Constantinople. This one is Byzantine and is from around 1050-1300 AD.
OK, breakfast and I'm off to my drs appointment and to get a baptism certificate. YAY!
Hope you all have a good one!

Don't try to do too much at once. Just keep a good balance. You only see your family every so often.

I still think that clip shown above is one of the most classic scenes EVER filmed.
SIDEBAR:// We have TWO of those African Greys, and they can drive you up the wall. Whenever Seraphima and I come home late from Vespers or Choir Practise, then we are scolded in a loud voice when opening the front door "Oooh! This is B*ll S*iT!!"
(Of course, we NEVER, EVER used such language in OUR home.)
