View Full Version : My Horror Story and a day at the Hospital

Please keep us in prayer tonight. I just got home from the hosptial.

My wife woke me up this morning to tell me that my daughter [3] had a fever. So, what you wakin me up for? She won't talk to me, she says.

My daughter was in the bathroom, my wife was running a cool bath, but my daughter was just standing there staring blankly at me. She wouldn't talk to me and then she started to drool. Has your blood ever went cold before?

Her heart was racing and beating like crazy, she was burning up but her lips started to go blue. She was breathing.. ok, not great. My wife called 911. The operator told us to get her out of the tub, which I was already doing because she was slumped over and wouldn't sit up.

I took her into her room and laid her on her side, and she started to quake and foam at the mouth. The firemen showed up and gave her oxygen, the ambulance showed up a few minutes later. My wife went with her in the ambulance and I followed in the car.

To make a long story short(er) she suffered something called a febrile seizure, because of the fever. Once she came out of the seizure she couldn't/wouldn't talk for about an hour. She had blood and urine tests and they were clean. So it is apparently some kind of virus and not a bacterial thing, which is what we were worried that it was.

We're all home now and it seems to have been more traumatic for my wife and I than for her. We're watching her tonight and medicating her as often as we can. We would appreciate your prayers.

Oh my goodness BT! That must have scared you!
Will keep her in prayer. Try not to worry too much, at this age they can easily have seizures with a high fever. There are a lot of weird symptoms going around with flu's these days, my sister had to call an ambulance awhile ago because she couldn't breath and thought she was going to die, it was some kind of virus. My oldest was allergic to one of her imunization shots when she was a babe and she got such a high fever it was almost bruning my leg to set her on my knee, and when she threw up there was steam coming from her mouth.

From what I've read, febrile seizures are not uncommon in young children. Still, I can imagine how terrifying that must have been for you and your wife! I will definitely be thinking of and praying for you and your family!

this happened to one of my nieces. She recovered well and never had any problems afterwards. I think its fairly common. I am praying that the Lord touches her and keeps her well.

SO sorry to hear that, BT!!! :prayer: That must have been such a horrible experience to have gone through! Praise God He brought you through it and spared your daughter!!

Something really similar happened to my little brother a few years ago. He felt sleepy in the middle of the morning and went back to bed for a nap, and then my brother (who was in the room, thank God!) heard him making strange noises and went over to see, and he was being thrown around in a seizure!! He was unconscious and had actually stopped breathing. My dad knows some things about CPR and set to work on him while I called the ambulance.

But to add to the matter, the 911 operator also sent in a detective and a squad car to investigate, who blocked the paramedics and delayed them, and searched the house and then promised to send a social worker. Why do they automatically suspect parents if something happens to a child, even if the parents initiate the 911 call over it?? The detective was particularly motivated to do send in a social worker by hearing that we were homeschooled.

God brought us through it without anything major, though! :) My brother was alright and has not had it happen since (though the hospital didn't know what it was), and we brought the Home School Legal Defense Association into the matter and they told us our rights and gave us advice (like DON'T LET THE SOCIAL WORKER IN), and convinced the detective to drop charges.

If they actually stopped the paramedics from coming in, I would look at a lawsuit against the detective or a formal statement of complaint against the detective and the 911 operator.

I say that because they have NO right to keep emergency care from anyone, particularly anything that might be ifethreatening.

BT, sorry to hear about your experience. It is very scary. My olderst daughter had febrile seizure in the middle of the night, stopped breathing for a bit, and I had to do mouth to mouth and call 911 at the same time (my husband was out of town). I knew it was a febrile seizure and that they are common in young children but it still scared the heck out of me!!

Praying for you and yours!

How's she doing now, BT?

Thank you all so much for your prayers!

She is still fighting this illness whatever it is. At the hospital they did blood and urine tests and determined that it is a virus and not something else. Thanks to God for that!

We've got her on a steady regimen of Childrens Motrin every 6 hours and if after an hour her fever doesn't come down we give her Children's tylenol. That at least is keeping it under control (we're using cold compresses and cool baths as well) but she can't seem to shake it.

The doctor did tell us that it is unlikely that she'll have another one, at least with this illness, but we're still pretty paranoid. To those of you who've seen it, you know why. To those of you who have never seen it, I pray that you never do.

Thanks again for all the prayers and PMs. I appreciate your care and encouragement!

The Tylenol/Motrin alternation is the best thing you can do for her. That and pray. I'll be praying too.
