Hi Guys,

Just a quick question for you all real quick if you have the time. Why do Baptist think that Dancing is bad??? I have been raised Baptist my like whole life, however, I have never really asked. I am not so sure that I agree with the dancing is a sin thing however. Would someone please explain it a little more to me. Thanks

John

I heard the history behind it a few months ago....I'll have to see if I can find something documented. It was an interesting story.

BTW--not all Baptists think all dancing is a sin. :)

I don't know why some Baptists think dancing as bad. I think it can be awesome when used to show our excitement and humility before Jesus. There are multiple biblical references to dancing as a means of praise.

2 Sam. 6:14
Ps 30:11
Ps 149:3

There are more if you need some :)

love-through-Christ,

Matt

OK, I couldn't find any documentation of it online...at least not quickly.

But one of the ladies at church had researched it and I think it was something like...

In the olden days, the men would go away for weeks at a time on cattle drives (or something), and when they would come back home, the community would have a big celebration to welcome them back...and the celebration would include dancing.

Well, as you might imagine, these men and women hadn't really seen members of the opposite sex for awhile, so the close contact of dancing was causing temptation issues, so they decided to forbid dancing.

In a nutshell, SOME baptist believe that dancing is a way that one glorifies thier own body for themselves. They are not dancing for the Lord, they are dancing in a room full of people hoping someone from the oppiste sex is watching them as they swing thier body all over the place.
I believe that one can cleanly dance before the Lord. I chose to do this privatly in my own home with my children, not publicly. IMHO, its just like praying, God enjoys it better in your own closet rather than on the streets with others.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks a bunch guys... All of it was helpful. I wish that I could find that documented story online or someplace. That would help a lot more. I see why they might have the thought that Dancing would be evil because of the temptations that it might bring.
Thanks Guys

I don't know. I've never been involved with a baptist church or other baptists who think it's bad. Every baptist I know dances.

Dancing is cool if your moves aren't sexual or your moves don't defile your conscience Also be careful what you are Listening to many modern Gospel artist are making wonderful music to groove to but if you like to mixx a lil secular with your gospel music beware of any lyrics that might defile your heart and mind I advise Intrumental ya get the beat to move ya feet but no lyrics to defile you mind!!!!

p.s. Be careful don't let you secular friends pull you back into a backslidden state stay on fire for the Lord keep the Faith and pray For more cool true christian friends Christians can be cool too but you got to be care you don't cross the Line stay with your Christian Friends and pray!!!!!!!!!!
Tell everybody Jesus saves!!!! on every chat forum and gameroom online please Keep the faith!!!:prayer:  :amen:

I would just like to put in my $0.02 here... I do not participate in dancing because it is a tempation thing. Guys have hands on your lower back and you are really close together... T-E-M-P-T-A-T-I-O-N is all I can say... Also, look at the type of dancing you see now a days... it is really kinda gross (I mean like the Britney and Christina dancing that everyone does now!)

While I agree that dancing in public is generally bringing glory to ourselves (clubs, social events etc.) I don't think that *all* dancing is bad...
There are people who dance for the Lord (not me, but others can have at it I don't mind a bit!) There are those who dance in worship...the ancient hebrews had a myriad of dances they performed for the Lord...so there's nothing biblical against it...

However, I'm a weird baptist...cause I belly dance :) At home...with a few friends for exercize, and ... well ... for the DH :D

Worship dancing--good.

Sexual dancing--bad.

Dancing with joy--good.

Dancing to show off your body--bad.

Dancing to celebrate a positive event--good.

Dancing because you are drunk--bad.

Dancing with your husband/wife--good.

Dancing with someone else's husband/wife--bad.

It isn't the dancing that has moral value, it is why and how and who that makes it good or bad. :)

Agreed! Today's dancing is a joke. A very bad joke. But traditional dancing, like I did when I was a kid (a long, long time ago, in a land far, far away....) it was a beautiful thing. A little T-E-M-P-T-A-T-I-O-N, but a whole lot of fun!

I dance and love it.

I think structured dance is fine.. I dance salsa and merengue, and John and I will be taking ballroom dance lessons soon too. I'm sure, however, anyone in this congragational forum would agree that "shakin' your groove thang" in front of a club full of people is NOT pleasing to the Lord.

Dancing is great exercise and burns calories, it's alot of fun and i have to THINK to do it! Especially salsa which is an 8 count dance! Way more fun than aerobics or step classes IMO.

As with anything I'm doing, I dress modestly too.

I generally agree with most of those good-bad statements, although I can think of a few obvious exceptions.

Sexual dancing with my wife is not bad, but probably better done in private. :)

I can think of many scenarios where dancing with someone else's spouse is not bad, dancing with my dad's wife for starters. ;)

For wedding banquets with dances at the end, I enjoy dancing with with some of my female friends in a non-intimate way. Often the bride and groom will dance with their friends because it is so difficult to find time to just relax and chat one-on-one on wedding night.

True! Dancing with your grandma is okay even though she is your grandpa's wife. Sexual dancing in the privacy of your own home with your wife when the kids aren't around can be very good and arguably pleasing to the Lord.

Yes, I dance at home for fitness, too. Burns the calories and is a lot less boring than the treadmill.

Just my $0.02 although I am not Baptist:

I think dancing with your spouse is Okay but I do not think as a teenager it is reccomendable to dance with the opposite gender. My mom thinks this to the point when they do the dance unit in gym I get to sit by the wall and just do homework or something

I'm not baptist but I am a worship dancer and it is a wonderful way to praise God. As long as you arent being sexual or prideful and are extremly modest there is nothing wrong with it. :) Have a nice day!
