I was looking for something else this morning, and I found this:
Proverbs 6:20
Heed*, my son, the command (mitzvah) of your father, and do not forsake the teaching (torah) of your mother.
*Heed; this is an imperative or command (in other words it is NOT a suggestion) form of a root meaning to guard
We could compare mitzvah to a father and torah to a mother. What is a very basic attribute of a father? They tend to be all about the details – go clean your room (do it!). What is a very basic attribute of a mother? They tend to be all about the nurturing aspect of that detail – I will help you clean your room (so you can know how and why to do it).
We tend to find two very basic kinds of people. Those who are all about the details and those who are all about the nurturing. What if the text is trying to tell us we need both? A marriage if you will between the two. In that light let us look at another very familiar passage.
Shemot (Exodus) 20:12 Honor your father and your mother; that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God gives you.
The preceeding was a random act of thinking ......
