Hi, I don't know if this has been posted before......But I'm curious: Who is your favourite saint and why? (I'm trying to find out which saint will guide me closer to God)

Mine would probably be St. Thomas Aquinas. One of the world's greatest minds, devoting his all-too-brief life to the greatest possible human understanding of God. And to think...he wasn't even finished the Summa Theologica when he had his vision of Heaven and quit writing. There was still more to write...

It would have to be a toss up. Although I love the Archangel Gabriel and Francis of Assissi, I have to go with the patron saint of my career, Saint Isidore of Seville. He was very intelligent and helped spread knowledge to an ignorant people. He was truly a great man.

I pray to St. Jude for my fiance's conversion, because my fiance used to wear a St. Jude pendant "because it was cool". I really don't have a favourite saint exactly, but I do have a great fondness for St. Jude. I also like St. Francis of Assisi and St. Patrick. St. Francis, because I think his teachings on living a simple life and his famous saying, "Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words," are extremely applicable in this age of materialism and preaching hellfire-and-damnation indiscriminately and even hypocritically.

St. Joan of Arc is my favourite. Why? Simply b/c she was an incredibly courageous woman till the end.

Hi...
My Guardian Angel comes through for me! :)
I just love and appreciate him!
I also have a special devotion to Our Blessed Lady...
And I also make novenas to The Little Flower, St. Jude, St. Joseph, St. Faustina, and St. Anna;for things, which come to pass.
Good question.

Mine is St. Peter. I think because Peter reminds me so much of myself. He was quick to anger, he doubted Jesus, he denied Jesus 3 times, he couldn't stay awake when Jesus was praying in the garden, he even was a bit sarcastic with Jesus at the washing of the feet thing (You will never wash my feet....then wash my head and my hands too) with all his faults Jesus made Peter the rock, the foundation of the Church. If Jesus chose someone like Peter to be the rock I figure there has to be hope for me :)
I even took the name of Peter way back when I made my Confirmation.

That is hard to pick one.
St. Faustina, entrusted to teach the world of Divine Mercy.
St. Jude, for his intercession of an answered prayer, the healing (against ALL odds) of one of daughters.
I love them all. We can learn so much from them.

Ask me again in five years and I'll tell you Pope Saint John Paul the Great. :)
Until then my favourite Saint is almost certainly Saint Francis. He lived such a simple, uncompromising life of devotion to the Gospel and to God. When we hear so much about the bickering and worldliness of Medieval Europe, he was a man who, like millions of others, especially other religious sisters and brothers, lived a good, holy life focused not on this world, but on God's Kingdom.
His ability to trust God and be complete in happiness without the comfort and security most of us know, I am amazed and overjoyed because he offers a beacon of hope that mankind truly is able to rid itself of evil and follow the Gospel.
We need not pretend that something is reconcilable with the Gospel because it is simply impossible to do, because he never did. Rather he was a slave of the Gospel, living in utter poverty, insecurity and simplicity, his only hope in God.
Pax vobiscum.
Joannes Paulus, ora pro nobis.

Mine is St. Aloysius Gonzaga and St. Robert Bellarmine are my favorites. I chose my saint name after St. Robert [because I liked the name] and St. Gonzaga because he is the Patron Saint of young people and struggled with sins that I have yet to overcome. St. Gonzaga was apprentice to St. Robert Bellarmine as well.

St. Michael the Archangel... his intercession combined with that of the Blessed Mother recently helped me through a very difficult night...
Also St. Benedict, and St. Catherine of Siena, simply because her life and spirituality are a constant inspiration to me.

The Blessed Mother who was pure in heart and humbly accepted God's plan. Also, St. Michael the Archangel for triumphing over Satan by the grace of God.
Other than Christ, I find those two to be the perfect example to follow. Obeidently follow God with a humble life, but always be agressive in fighting off Satan.

By far, my favorite is the Blessed Mother...
My patron saint is St. Dominic Savio. His motto was "Death rather than sin" and he died at the age of 15. He lived an extremely holy life and helped convert many people. He studied under St. John Bosco and would always bring other people with him when he went to visit the Blessed Sacrament. He is patron of youth, altar servers, and choir boys.
I also like St. Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominican order), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Therese of Lisieux, Bl. John XXIII, St. Tarcisius, St. Maria Goretti, St. Francis, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, Ss. Felicity and Perpetua, St. Juan Diego, Bl. Teresa of Calcutta, St. Padre Pio, St. Josemaria Escriva, St. Faustina, the archangels, my guardian angel....
Can I choose "All of the above..."

Also, I like St. Patrick, and St. Nicholas (who wouldnt want to pray to Santa Claus ^_^)

I hope it's not out of line for someone who isn't Roman Catholic to post about this; please forgive me if I give any offense.
St. Patrick and St. Brigid have been favorites of mine since I was a child; also the Holy Archangels, especially St. Raphael. The saint I feel closest to, though, is St. Phanourios. A devotion to this saint isn't usually found in the Catholic Church, but he seems to have lived in the time of the Roman persecutions -- though we don't know for sure -- and so I think he belongs to all the Church, before the schism.

I like St. Theresa because she says everything we do we should do for God. You can be a housewife and do little things and they are for God. That's what she called the Little Way.
I also like St. Monica she never gave up on her son or her husband and she always prayed for them.

Monergism,
Just wanted to clear something up. Origen, while a great theologian and doctor of the Church, is not a Saint as far as I know. He did some very strange things and believed some very strange things (things condemned as heretical at the Fifth Ecumenical Council). I don't think he was ever declared a Saint.
Also...
ooh...ooh...I want to second St. Therese of Lisieux. What a kind and gentle soul. Filled with love for Our Lord.

Oh boy... I have to pick just ONE?!!!?!?
I'll just pick some of my favorite ones and give a brief story on why I feel close to each. If anyone wants me to expound I'll be happy to!
First and foremost on any list of saints is the Blessed Virgin Mary, full of Grace, handmaid of the Lord. Primacy also goes to St.Joseph her most chaste spouse, and John the Baptist. Same for the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and the Twelve.
In order of when I got to know them (give or take... and restraining listto officially canonized saints.)
1) St. Francis of Assisi - if not for him I'd be atheist today
2) St. Anthony of Padua - known for being a miracleworker, but a greatpreacher too
3) St. Lorenzo Ruiz - I'm from the Philippines, and he is our first Filipino saint and martyr
4) St. Bernadette Soubirous- Lourdes. Need I say more?
5) St. Vincent de Paul - helping the poor
6) St. Francis de Sales - when he entered theChablais, it was 1% catholic. three years later it was 1 % Calvinist.
7) St. Martin de Porres - he's a healer and herbalist - so am I.
8) Padre Pio - "pray, hope and don't worry"
9) St. Augustine - need I say more?
10) st. Thomas Aquinas- this man was AMAZING. what an intellect.
honorable mention: St Maximillian Kolbe, St. Albert the Great, St. Claire of Assisi, St. Francis Xavier, St. Peter of Verona, St. Ignatius of Antioch,St. justin the martyr,St. Athanasius, St. Irenaeus of Lyons, St. Jerome...

No, Origen was never declared saint, and neither was Tertullian. Tertullian actually broke away from the Church and St. Augustine had to reconvert his followers centuries later. That is not to take anything away from their standing as FATHERS of the CHURCH.
