My fiancee and I just went to the Song of Solomon conference held near our home. We were surprised by the lack of content and the lack of research and preparation by the presenter. He made many mistakes in his interpretation that we obvious even to my fiancee, who has only been studying the Bible a few months.

Have any of you gone to this conference and were you surprised by number of things the presenter just made up out of thin air?

Isn't that the book that you can only read once you are married? :b

It's a conference that says it's a Bible study about the Song of Solomon, a two-day affair that is supposed to reveal God's plan for Christian romance, which sounded really good to us, since we are preparing to marry. But when we got to it, it was like a six-hour advertisement for the presenter's other books and videos. He kept saying that he couldn't cover the topic at the conference and that we should spend another $80- $100 on the other resources he was selling in the lobby.

He kept making mistakes like saying that Shulamite was a nickname for Solomon, when it really means "garden of lillies" or "bouquet of lillies." And that Jewish men leave perfume on people's doornobs as a calling card, and that God beat up Solomon's wife and tore her clothes. It was weird and we really feel like we misunderstood what it was supposed to be about. We paid a substantial sum of money, but did not get any added understanding of the Bible or about Christian romance. sigh. We could have gone out to a couple movies and had a nice meal with the money we wasted on this conference.

I was wondering if others had a better experience with Song of Solomon at other locations?

Sounds like a big rip-off. A wolfe fleecing the sheep. Did you ask for your money back?
Thanks for the warning, though.
Oh, and congratulations on your upcoming marriage.
God Bless you!

I was thinking of asking for our money back. But we did attend the conference.

Is it morally okay to ask for a refund of something like a Christian conference just because we weren't satisfied?

lambslove,

I think that if it was just a conference that asked you to buy more stuff instead of what it advertised to be then no. If it was just because it was just not to your liking then yes it would be wrong. From what i gather the 1st option is true in this case. so I do not think it would be immoral.

Aye. . .

I saw this thread too late! I only saw it because of the Similar Threads feature and Jesaiah's thread. Back in October and early November 2002, my church went absolutely nuts over this craziness. All the married couples were requested to come if they could afford it (and the church and other Christians actually offered to pay for anyone who did not have money) and even singles were invited.

The sunday school classes taught on the SoS from a completely literal perspective  and I only wish that I had seen this thread back in August so I could have shown the pastor and others that this was not wise.

I personally believe that the only thing this "Conference" is good at is turning a book of allegorically spoken truths about God into a lemon.  I do NOT prefer citrus with my Scripture, thank you.

BTW, I did not go despite someone's offer to pay my way. I considered this to be in the same category that I consider other things that use sex as their main selling point to be in: trash.

Hey lambslove,

I have never heard of the conf but it sounds like it was not what it was made out to be.

I know there are a lot of good books out there on the SOS but don't know the names of any off hand.  Except for a little study that I thoroughly enjoyed by J Vernon McGee.  It was wonderful.  However it was not from the view of a maritial issue between humans.  It was done on the Bridegroom (Jesus) and His Bride (the church).

I have heard of the frangrance on the doorknob before and heard that at that time that is what the men did.  That would flow with the SOS 5:5.

Anyway, perhaps, if you have not already done so, you could browse your local Christian bookstore.  You'll most likely find something there.

Be blessed,

lambslove,

I think its great you wanted to go to that with your fiancee. There are awesome studies out there. I want to let you in on a video series on the S.O.S. that I viewed, and it literaly knocked my socks off. It was taped a few years back. It is six full hours, split into half hour sections. So there are twelve sections total, and there is a workbook to go through. Tommy Nelson teaches it, and it is his opinion that God has given us this book as a means to educated us on this thing called sexuality. He is absolutely right. I am certain you would enjoy this series. Check it out http://www.thesongofsolomon.com/

I am sure there are many conferences. I doubt it is the same one. Plus the one I viewed was awesome and I can't think of why someone would not like it.

It's always a little funny to me how many preachers are absolutely terrified of Song of Solomon.
