001: A mighty fortress is our God

Tunes: Ein'Feste Burg, 640

1.
A mighty fortress (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=23&chapter=18&verse=2&version=31&context=verse) is our God,
A bulwark (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=23&chapter=91&verse=4&version=31&context=verse) never failing;
Our helper (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=23&chapter=118&verse=7&version=31&context=verse) he, amid the flood (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?search=isaiah%2043:2;&version=65;),
Of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

2.
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right man on our side,
The man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ (http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Christ) Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth (http://www.answers.com/sabaoth&r=67) his name,
From age to age the same (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%2013:8;&version=31;),
And he must win the battle (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=5&chapter=20&verse=4&version=46&context=verse).

3.
And though this world, with demons filled,
Should threaten to undo us; (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=52&chapter=12&verse=2&version=31&context=verse)
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=52&chapter=8&verse=38&end_verse=40&version=31&context=context).
The prince of darkness grim,
We tremble not for him,
His rage we can endure (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=49&chapter=10&verse=17&version=31&context=verse),
For lo! His doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

4.
That word (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john%201:1;&version=31;) above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them abideth;
The Spirit (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=50&chapter=14&verse=26&version=31&context=verse) and the gifts (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=53&chapter=14&verse=1&end_verse=3&version=31&context=context) are ours
Through him who with us sideth (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=52&chapter=8&verse=31&version=31&context=verse).
Let goods (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%2010:21;&version=31;) and kindred (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=47&chapter=12&verse=50&version=31&context=verse) go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill;
God's truth abideth still,
His Kingdom is for ever (http://biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=73&chapter=11&verse=15&version=31&context=verse).

Happy Birthday to you
To Jesus be true
May God's richest blessings
Abide upon you!

After twenty five years, I still have my Salvation Army songbook. And this was always my favourite:

No 264

Come Home! 631

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
Calling for you and for me!
Patiently Jesus is waiting and watching
Watching for you and for me!

Come home, come home!
Ye who are weary, come home!
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
Calling, O sinner, come home!

Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,
Pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not his mercies,
Mercies for you and for me?

O for the wonderful love he has promised,
Promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, he has mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me!

Wow, a real blast from my past. I used to sing that in the singing company, more years ago than I want to remember

Can you elaborate on the 'singing company' Andy?

That song means heaps to me. I've always loved it since my Sally days. Later, at a time when I'd gone away from the Lord and was being drawn back, I visited a catholic charismatic group. The lay preacher prayed with those who needed prayer and then called me over. We prayed a prayer of rededication, and then he sang that song to me. Have you ever had Holy Spirit sing to you? That's what is what like and I nearly ended up on the floor.

Hope this helps. I spent 8 years in the singing company, until my voice broke and they kicked me into the Songsters

Just been reading the thread about the Founders letter.

So todays song is one of his.

Thou Christ of burning, cleansing flame,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
Thy blood bought gift today we claim,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
Look down and see this waiting host,
Give us the promised Holy Ghost;
We want another Pentecost,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!

God of Elijah, hear our cry:
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
To make us fit to live or die,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
To burn up every trace of sin,
To bring the light and glory in,
The revolution now begin,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!

’Tis fire we want, for fire we plead,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
The fire will meet our every need,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
For strength to ever do the right,
For grace to conquer in the fight,
For power to walk the world in white,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!

To make our weak hearts strong and brave,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
To live a dying world to save,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!
O see us on Thy altar lay
Our lives, our all, this very day;
To crown the offering now we pray,
Send the fire, send the fire, send the fire!

When we all get to heaven
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus
We'll sing and shout the victory!

One of the hymns we are having at the wedding

Refrain:
Bind us together, Lord,
bind us together with cords
that cannot be broken.
Bind us together, Lord,
bind us together,
bind us together with love.

There is only one God.
There is only one King.
There is only one Body.
That is why we sing:

Refrain

Made for the glory of God,
Purchased by his precious Son,
Born with the right to be clean,
For Jesus the victory has won.

Refrain

You are the family of God,
You are the promise divine,
You are God's chosen desire,
You are the glorious new wine.

Can't forget "Onward Christian Soldiers" now can we! :D

BTW, does anyone remember the musical the Army put on about 30 years ago - they also put out a recording of it - i had the album many moons ago. One of the songs went like this "...look, look at the life He chose to live, look at the path He trod, look at the face of Jesus Christ, it is the face of God!...":scratch:

Hosea
Glory
Take over Bid
The Blood of the Lamb (I was in that one - Bookies runner)
Jesus Folk

Make me a channel of Your peace
Where there is hatred let me bring Your love
Where there is injury, Your pardon, Lord
And where there's doubt, true faith in You

Oh, Master, grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved, as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of Your peace
Where there's despair in life let me bring hope
Where there is darkness, only light
And where there's sadness, ever joy

Make me a channel of Your peace
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
In giving to all men that we receive
And in dying that we're born to eternal life

I still have a hard time singing songs I think I know to the wrong tune. One of our officers favourite choruses is "Christ, Christ is the King" Perhaps since he is from South Africa he didnt' grow up singing "Home home on the range?" My daughter won't let me sing Home home on the range while everyone else sings the song book chorus.

They even changed the tune to 'Send the Fire'

LOL I have a harder time singing an old song to a new tune, than a new song to an old tune. Especially since, coming out of the Lutheran church, I only discovered classics like When I Survey in the late 90's... :)

lol.

For some reason, as I read that, I thought of John Gowens words

"They shall come from the East, They shall come from the West"
