I know what I believe from my study of the word but I would love to hear some other's opinions backed by scripture.
When do you receive the Holy Spirit?
What does He do?
Do you keep Him or does He come and go?

So does no one have any thoughts on this? Has another post already been posted in the non-denom forum about it?

"Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?
And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard
whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto
them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they
said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John
verily baptized with the baptism of repentance,
saying unto the people, that they should believe on
him which should come after him, that is, on Christ
Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in
the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid
his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them;
and they spake with tongues, and prophesied."

When a person hears the word of God, and then decides to respond and follow the Lord, they have been influenced as much as the Holy Spirit is going to influence anyone today.
"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." (Eph.6:17)

When do you receive the Holy Spirit?
The minute you ask for Him and become a Christian.
"If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”- Luke 11:13
"And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit" -Ephesians 1:13
What does He do?
Convicts, guides, and empowers you to grow closer to God and to do His will.
John 14:15-31, John 16:5-16
He does this in various manifestations. Some Christians get one gift, others get other gifts. There are no gifts that are manditory for salvation nor are people only saved if they have a certain gift. Christian brothers and sisters are to work together with these gifts to do the work of Christ on earth, and those who are strong in one area can cover those who are weak in another. Everyone is to cover each other, and love is a fruit of the Spirit that trancends all gifts in importance. 1 Corinthians 12-14
Do you keep Him or does He come and go?
We keep Him. Rather, He keeps us with the Father.
"Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come." - 2 Corinthians 1:21-22
"And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession–to the praise of his glory." - Ephesians 1:13-14

When do you recieve the Holy Spirit?
According to Peter after we are baptized with water.
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
What does He do?
Spirit of truth, Comforter, Teacher of all things, testifies of Jesus?
(Joh 14:16) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever;
(Joh 14:26) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
(Joh 15:26) But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Do you keep Him or does He come and go?
We keep Him forever.
that he may abide with you forever;

In the 1st century church, to receive the Holy Spirit was to receive the 'power' which was miraculous in nature. The Apostles and the Cornelious household received the baptismal measure. All the others received a spiritual gift of the Spirit via the laying on of hands by any of the Apostles.
The Holy Spirit's work today is now only through the word of God. (Eph.6:17)

It has always been described to me as this...
The Holy Spirit is God in everything and anything, within people, within nature, within all that we see hear and do. To accept the Holy Spirit is to live in accordance with the teachings of Christ.

That is not true to the word of God. God is the same; yesterday, today, and tommorrow. Saying that the Holy Spirit only works through the word of God is limiting God. I have witnessed the Holy Spirit do amazing things, but He does not contradict the word. The Holy Spirit will do what He wills to see His plan through. Thats it.
When we are saved, Christ comes in and we are one with Him. We do not recieve the Holy Spirit until He wills it or we ask for it (and through laying of hands).
Acts 10:47-48 - Then Peter said, 47“Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
In this scripture, it proves that the water baptism is seperate from recieving the Holy Spirit. I also know this through experience as well. I was a skeptic untill I had hands layed on me, then I spoke in tongues. Man, that was awesome!

He Is a Person.
The Scriptures give us five clear evidences that the Holy Spirit is a person, not just a mystic force or strange power.
The Holy Spirit is spoken of as "He." Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as "He." He promised His disciples: "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He [the Holy Spirit] may abide with you forever" (John 14:16).
The Holy Spirit has intelligence. He knows the "deep things of God" and reveals them to us (1 Corinthians 2:10,11). Only a person has this kind of intelligence.
The Holy Spirit makes decisions. He gives gifts to the Lord's people, "distributing to each one individually as He wills" (1 Corinthians 12:11). Only a personal being can make decisions.
The Holy Spirit has emotions. He feels love (Romans 15:30) and grief (Ephesians 4:30). An influence cannot feel emotions like these.
The Holy Spirit is active. He does things only a person can do: He speaks (Revelation 2:7), He intercedes (Romans 8:26), He teaches (John 14:26), He leads (Romans 8:14), He appoints (Acts 20:28), and He empowers (Acts 1:8).
He Is God.
The Holy Spirit is also referred to in the Bible as God. He is the third person of the eternal Trinity, one with the Father and with the Son. The following factors show His deity:
His name appears as equal with the Father and the Son in the formula for baptism and in some of the New Testament prayers (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14).
The apostle Peter said that the Holy Spirit was God. When Ananias' sin was exposed, Peter told him that he had lied to the Holy Spirit. He went on to say that this lie had not been "to men but to God" (Acts 5:3,4).
The Holy Spirit is called "Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:17,18).
He possesses qualities that belong only to God: eternality (Hebrews 9:14), the ability to be everywhere at the same time (Psalm 139:7-10), sovereign power (Luke 1:35,37), and the knowledge of "the things of God" (1 Corinthians 2:10-12).
The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit, who lives within every Christian, is a person and that He is God. Admittedly we can't grasp the great mystery of how the Holy Spirit can live within us. But we don't have to understand it. We just have to trust that what the Bible says is true.

Except the Force is more like pantheism, which is very different from God's omnipresence.

If you are not referring to Biblical metonymy, are you saying that Jesus literally comes inside a person when they are saved CWLite, then later the literal Holy Spirit comes inside the person? When does the literal Father come inside the person?

What do you think it means to be sealed by the Holy Spirit for the day of redemtion?

"Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same
Spirit. And there are differences of
administrations, but the same Lord. And there are
diversities of operations, but it is the same God
which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of
the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
For to one is given by the Spirit the word of
wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the
same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit;
to another the gifts of healing by the same
Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to
another prophecy; to another discerning of
spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to
another the interpretation of tongues:
But all these worketh that one and the selfsame
Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he
will. For as the body is one, and hath many
members, and all the members of that one body,
being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one
body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be
bond or free; and have been all made to drink into
one Spirit."

Many here at this site believe that the Apostles had the literal Holy Spirirt dwelling in them in such passages as John 16:12-17 This is clearly Biblical metonymy here. For does it say that Jesus was not literally dwelling in them? Does it say that the Father was literally dwelling in them?
The Holy Spirit dwelt in the Apostles by metonymy. Meaning 'power' was put for the Holy Spirit.

It's funny how you pick and choose what you want to be literal or not. I actually believe that the Holy Spirit and Christ dwell in me. Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. I believe that you recieve the Holy Spirit at salvation and that from that point on you are sealed by Him for the day of redemtion. Christ is All in All.

To ask why the Father and Son do not literally dwell in a person who claims that the Holy Spirit literally dwells in them, is not being Pharisee.

This is a very good example of how the 'gift of the Holy Spirit' was used as a metonymy. Miraculous 'power' was used as a metonymy for the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, only those Christians in the 1st century such as the Apostles, the Cornelius household, and those who had the 'gift' by having one of the Apostles lay hands on them, are going to be resurrected!:D
