View Full Version : The Rosary
AveMaria

Welcome to the online rosary, in the Chapel of Scripture, Tradition, & Reason!
Because we Anglicans can be a fairly diverse group and believe there's room for a wide range of opinion, belief, and practice, our online rosary might seem a bit confusing at times, but that does not make it any less beautiful or spiritual.
In the interest of keeping this accessible to all, I'd like to briefly explain how to pray the rosary, but please feel free to use any favorite prayers you may have and pray as the spirit moves you.
To simplify, Anglicans typically pray using either a Dominican or Anglican rosary. The difference? Anglican rosaries have 33 beads, organized into 4 weeks of 7 beads each. The most common Dominican rosary has 59 beads, organized into 5 decades of 10 beads each.
Upon each decade, a different mystery is prayed and meditated upon. Some Anglicans pray the mysteries, others don't. If you'd rather not, that's perfectly fine.
Some Anglicans use Anglican rosaries to pray a shortened version of the typical Dominican rosary, others experiment around and substitute different prayers. We've had a request or two to use specific prayers, and do feel free to adapt or add your own.
To get us started:
HOW TO PRAY THE DOMINICAN ROSARY
1) Make the Sign of the Cross and say the "Apostles' Creed."
2) Say the "Our Father."
3) Say three "Hail Marys."
4) Say the "Glory be to the Father."
5) State the First Mystery; then say the "Our Father."
6) Say ten "Hail Marys," while meditating on the Mystery.
7) Say the "Glory be to the Father."
8) Say the Fatima Prayer.
9) State the Second Mystery; then say the "Our Father."
Repeat 6, 7 & 8 and continue with Third, Fourth and Fifth Mysteries in the same manner.
10) We finish by saying the concluding prayers. ("Hail, Holy Queen" or "Walsingham", or pick your own).
THE PRAYERS
The sign of the cross:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sin, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen
Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. (For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen).
The Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
The Glory Be
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen
Fatima Prayer
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen.
Hail Holy Queen
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen.
Walsingham Prayer
O Thou, alone of all women, Mother and Virgin, Mother most happy, Virgin most pure, now we sinful as we are, come to see thee who art all pure, we salute thee, we honour thee as how we may with our humble offerings; may Thy Son grant us, that imitating thy most holy virtues, we also, by the grace of the Holy Ghost may deserve spiritually to conceive the Lord Jesus Christ in our innermost soul, and once conceived, never to lose him. Amen.
One prayer per post, please! If you're praying a "Hail Mary", please indicate which bead (1-10), to make it easier for subsequent posters to keep track.

(8)Ave Maria, of the third world, full of grace, all you who know pain, know the anxieties and the subhuman condition of your prople, the Lord is with you, with all who suffer, who hunger and thirst for justice, who know neither letters nor figures.
Blessed are you among women, the women and men of the roads and puebloes, of furrowed faces, of brawny muscles, of calloused hands, of forlorn eyes, but with hope.
Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.Becouse without him, our life and the struggle for human dignity has no meaning.
Sancta Maria, all of you holy, a thousand times holy, by your lives, by the times you carry water, that you smudge your face at the hearth, trustung and hoping in God. He has made you Mother of God.
Pray for us sinners, for it is our fault, in one way or another, by our egoism and envy, that you, joined with the rest of the women and men of the poor, the third world, suffer misery, totalitarian governments, economic repression, wars and blood and hatred.
Now, so that we change, so that there will be a conversion of heart and of all men and women towards your Son, our brother.
And at the hour of our death, so that the Lord have mercy on all who have offended him in our brothers and sisters, in the men and women of a world which is struggling desperately for life.
Amen.
