The bible is the only place I can find absolute truth. Whatever your question pertaining to life and godliness is in the bible. Every word of the bible can be used for reproof, doctrine and teaching.

Watch out for the modern liberal that teach the bible is full of fables and a lot of Paul's writing are not authorative. Because they teach the first lie from the devil. Yeah just what did God say? The questopm the devel asked Eve. By doing that he placed doubt in Eves mind, just what he wounted to do.

The "bible" is an interesting idea in that the concept of the Scriptures as a singular entity isn't even presented in the Scriptures .

Anyway , that is one of my thoughts .

after many years of floundering back and forth between what this person said and that person said . . . i've found the Bible to be the only way to fly!

One can't help but note the fulfilled prophecy that has come from the book, and that when you follow what is written on the pages, somehow . . .life is more in balance. Probably because the Word is focused on God, His will, and way for us.

That is where I look for all my answers and see how they line up with what God says about what I should do or not do throughout my life.

I think I'd be "lost" without the bible honestly :amen:

which are able to make thee wise unto salvation
through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly
furnished unto all good works."

when we made known unto you the power and coming
of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses
of his majesty."

personnaly i prefer reading the New Testament, mostly because i love the teachings in there. just a neat bible verse study for you. Read hebrews 11:1, about Faith. Then read Romans 5:1-5, and see how they relate or explain each other. There are a couple od other passages that speak of this faith discribed in Hebrews but i will let you find them. Just look up the word Faith in the back and read the passages given and this will help you. Enjoy, the more i read it the more these things come out. But dont believe everything here at christian forums it is a debating type forum so there are many interpratations but it does help you study and compare and constrast ideas and interpretations so that it makes you study harder and pray more for understanding. Let the Spirit guide you into a wonderful life with Christ.

I'm with ya Irish girl. I love my Bible too. Those Words have been keeping my heart lit for 25 years now and they never get old. I still love the Words as much now as when they first began to deliver me from the Evil. I pray that the Spirit of Jesus create in you a lasting, burning LOVE of the Truth. God bless you.

Try the Psalms.

I'll not discourage you from reading the NT in the slightest. However, it is beneficial to understand how rich and meaningful the OT really is.

Also, you can appreciate the NT even more when you learn how much the OT points directly to Christ.

My favorite is the book of John.

You know it's kind of ridiculous for skeptics to say to me that I can't know for sure that John actually existed and wrote this gospel. For they believe that Homer actually existed and wrote the Illiad!:D

I absolutely love the bible too. Of course, I find many insights helpful from "wise owls" who've been there, done that....however the bible should always be our source of strength, encouragement, wisdom, etc. Without the bible, we'd be lost. Thank you Jesus for preserving your Word!

I VERY MUCH love the book of John (in the bible).

I also VERY MUCH love the book of Galations (in the bible).

Galations speaks to how one can obey the law, without being UNDER the law (but under the grace of Christ) --and it's not lengthy, either.)

Very interesting.

The Bible although it defines absolute Truth, it does not claim to be the only source of truth (note the capital "t" and the lower case).

I didn't say anything about "truth" . I was talking about how people usually refer to the Scriptures as a singular entity while the Scriptures do not contain an instance where someone refers to them as such .

I too love reading the bible and really enjoy Colossians. My favorite book would have to be Ephesians, but as someone else pointed out Psalms are an Excellent place to just read and let God speak to you. I also enjoy doing studies on often overlooked books in the bible such as Obadiah and finding God speaking to me through them as well.

Welcome to christian forums irish_girl.
Enjoy the strings, just don't get strung along. There are many that do not take God at his word, and believe what he said about his word in his word. God promised to preserve his word, not one jot or tittle, right? so if there are deletions then it is proof that that is not a bible but an Alexandrian fake.
It doesn't matter if some don't agree with you, what is important is that you agree with the words of God,and never ever compromise.King James all the way.

Is this really necessary?

This is a simple thread on a relatively new believer's enjoyment of reading the Bible.

The passage you are referring to does not address if slavery is permissible. It merely gives direction on how people should respond to an existing situation.

Chapter and verse where the Bible referes to itself as authoritative.

2 Timothy 3:16.

Though I'm sure you've heard that before......

Might I suggest we take this to another thread out of respect for the OP who was not looking for any kind of debate.

If you read verse 15 it says the Scriptures from Timothy's childhood - that would be the Old Testament if we place this verse in it's proper context.

Second, this passages says nothing about Scripture being authoritative, it says it's useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, etc.

I agree . It says nothing about authoritative . And , since it was specifically addressing the older writings , Paul would have been saying that the Mosaic Code was authoritative . That is ... *IF* Paul was discussing them as being authoritative . And , that would contradict much of his other writings regarding the Law .

I am not the one to be addressed in that . I was responding to another poster . Your beef is with the person who originally brought up the contradictory concept of "authority" of the Scriptures without sufficient , clear passages in the Scriptures to back it up . I don't know who that poster is but they are the one that you can address .
