Our corp over december received hundreds of christmas presents to give out to the needy children (many thanks to Kmart & the public).
While sorting through the presents The lady in charge said we had to THROW AWAY any 'Lord of the rings', 'star wars' and 'harry potter' presents because they are 'Evil'??????????????
ALL I CAN SAY IS....WHAT THE??????????
The generous public buy these presents and we throw them away because they are about magicians or war in space?
is this a little silly to anyone else????
What ever happened to a childs imagination anyway?
surely there are far worse things???

That's terrible, in my opinion, because they do not seem any more "evil" than any other toys based on a story. Kids do understand the differences between real and fictional most of the time. It is definitely silly, and a waste of merchandise/gifts. I would think there are far worse things.

I could kind of understand if the comment had been along the lines of 'because the Salvation Army may be seen to be endorsing these things'...
Personally, I think the standard old Disney fairytales and Barbie dolls do more harm to children's views and behaviours later in life.. :sigh:

Maybe you could return them to the store for credit on more suitable items, or contact a local charity without religious objections to the toys and make a swap

Wouldn't get much sympathy from my two sons, who love all of those, spend their time acting out 'good v evil' in dress-up play (which also includes conventional 'we are solidiers, here are our guns' play which I tried in vain to ban many years ago! My original 'no guns' edict has had to be changed to 'no guns that look like real guns'. I lost that battle the day they discovered they could make guns from their hand!)
There certainly may be a discussion about age suitability, but as long as evil gets whooped, I'm fairly relaxed. And we talk about the issues. There was the memorable day when 9 year old said 'the force is a bit like the Holy Spirit, isnt it Mummy.' By the time we had finished our chat, he had a much better understanding, and was able to tell me why the Holy Spirit is totally different to the force.
The bottom line is that children live in a world of imagination. It is a vital part of their development, and they do know the difference.

Hmmm...... the insanity continues. I think those toys are MUCH better than some of the other presents I've seen kids receive.

I objected to Lord of The Rings because of the violence, it's not appropriate for little children BUT I don't think Harry Potter is evil or Star Wars.
I read a book which helped interpret passages of The Bible, and the passage about Jesus saying,"If your eye causes you to sin pluck it out.."
One point of view on that is, it's not what is on the outside that causes you to sin but what's INSIDE in your heart that causes you to sin.
So to say that Harry Potter or Star Wars will warp a child is a little silly.

I thought Star Wars had a fair bit of violence in it too, maybe not as graphic as LOTR, but still pretty violent.

My advice would be to stay well away from the Simpsons then....

Wow. I think that, if the public knew that, it would reflect very badly on the Salvation Army. Is this a policy of the organization/church or was it just the opinion of that one woman? If it is a policy, they should specify that they don't accept these donations so that people won't waste money buying them and donating them to the Salvation Army. Or they could donate them to an organization that would distribute them. And if it's just the opinion of one person within the organization, I would have appealed to someone else higher up.
If the Salvation Army did specifically ask that these items not be donated, some people might choose to give to another organization that they consider more "open-minded," and the Salvation Army might lose a significant amount of donations. Even so, though, if this is their policy, it's dishonest not to disclose it to the donating public for fear of turning people off to their charity work. If this is a sincere conviction, they should have the faith and the integrity to make it known and accept the consequences. This is really very disturbing to hear.

Anyone point out to this lady thar JRR Tolkine was a christian and TLOTR is base on Christian Values? I mean he helped very much in the conversion of C Lewis...whats next ...the narnia series going to be unfit for children?

That's a good point actually. Do we have an official policy on this, or do we as an organisation have slightly more common sense than that?

I tend to think that most of us Sallies have more common sense than that. It would seem to me that this was the decision of one individual based on that person's own opinion.

There is a website lurking out there that claims that CS Lewis was not a christian and that we are decieved if we believe Narnia is based on any type of Christianity. Cant recall it, but I bet you could google it if interested.

:sigh: Wouldn't surprise me in the least. I bet we could find a website claiming that almost every famous christian leader wasn't christian, if we looked hard enough.

Well that goes without saying... we let women out of the house!
(I've mostly given up caring that others object... I figure if I'm doing things right, the fact that I'm female is going to be the LEAST of the objections... :D )

As we await the launch of the new Magic Roundabout movie in the UK, it occurred to me that if the LOTR haters are going to be consistant, they should protest against this movie on the grounds that one of the charactors clearly shows signs of patronising certain recreational pharma cuticals on a regular basis.
Come to think of it, the prospect of a cinema screen sized spring loaded, talking Strawberry could be quite alarming to some.
Can't wait to see it.
