I'm Blue, but I'm not sure I belong here. I just stopped by to say hi. I'm really in the Messianic Jew forum, but being a former Jr. Soldier and Corps Cadet, (not to mention songster, band member, girl guard, and anything else that would get me out of the house.) -I just had to stop by.

We are a mixed bunch here at Cyber Corps. The Bandmaster is an Anglican! The spirit of ecumenism is alive and well here. All that is required is that youu want to hang out here!

thanks for the invite. I think I will stick around and visit. Does anyone know if there isa website or some other means of getting a hold of old friends from the Corps? I started a "group" at classmates.com hoping someone would bite, but so far it's a no. I would love to catch up with some old friends, and don't know where to start. Any ideas?
(Note:I currently live in Illinois, 2,000 miles away from Oregon, so going by for a visit is not really an option.)
Thanks.

something from the fridge was the name of a band that kinda started and then was degassed last year. was 5 guys from church, but we had different views of what we wanted to acheive as a group. ended up splitting and forming a smaller group with the bass player and a girl from church. that became the temporary comtemporary band. it was formed for the sole purpose of playing at his college fundraiser. as it turned out, we ended up scoring a few more gigs at various events. the final one being at music camp a few weeks ago. was the best performance that we did. can't beat having 120 people sitting there actually listening to what you were goign on about.
i like the name so use it on forums that let me use that many letters. as far as people at church and were in the band are concerned though, the fridge has been degassed and shall never be talked about again!!!!
we did originally start out as "they did things to us" but i am going to be a teacher and it had to many negative connotations!!!!

with some practice i think i am competent enough on trumpet. can't play a cornet to save myself. seems weird but i just can't get a nice sound out of one. i the valves are closer to my face and it just trips me out
i do struggle with full on band arrangements of stuff. played 2nd cornet part at camp, only because they didn't have 3rd or 4th.

Hi Andy...I have been around here before [J21]but never seemed to link up with people - maybe due to the time zones. It was during the build up excitement Sascha and you guys were involved in with her engagement and trip to the UK.
Anyway...ubby and I are both Soldiers. I started up the Junior Youth group just over 2 yrs ago and run it Friday nights with 2 wonderful helpers and several who are willing to fill in if needed.
I called it 'The Gate Youth Group'... "One Gate - One Way". Always loved John10:9 so gave it that name, though it's probably been used somewhere before. Oh well..
Adelaide is a great city...a lot of people think it's pretty quiet and boring, but I like it like that and we get a lot of tourists so they must like the laid back ethos too!
We live in an outer suburb and head 20 minutes "up the hill" to our Corps at Golden Grove.
Won't repeat all about my hubby's family history [long time] with the Army as I posted that somewhere in Cyber Corps last year and am too tired at the moment to rehash it all. Probably gathering dust bunnies in the archives somewhere around here.
That sums me up I guess...
Heading off to bed...it's been a long day and there are a few of them to come.
Night Andy.

Just wanted to say hi to all you Salvationists... I used to work in the Divisional Headquarters in Massachusetts and what a great year that was. I got to go on a couple retreats, and of course working with all the officers and soldiers was fantastic. I got to do a little kettling at Christmastime, and even came to worship most Sundays with Captain Chuck Thomas. (My boss was Major Ronald Forman).
If I was to convert to a different denomination, it would be SA... I was so impressed with the organization, the people, the mission, everything! Keep up the great work, all of you.

I am a lay Salvationist - I would describe myself as 'High Army' a traditionalist who deplores the lowering of standards and the very casual approach which seems to have infiltrated the movement. I do not enjoy the 'happy clappy' type of worship. I welcome strong bible based teaching and not 'gospel of assumption' coupled with trivial social and well-being homilies where the 'good life' is advocated rather than being challenged to embrace the 'spiritual life'.

I welcome strong bible based teaching and not 'gospel of assumption' coupled with trivial social and well-being homilies where the 'good life' is advocated rather than being challenged to embrace the 'spiritual life'.
Hmmm....methiinks that you and I are going to get along rather well together.

Hi there - read my profile for the basics.
But I am a first gen salvationist; officer for 18 years: 10 years on field, 7 years on social (asst manager of a hostel, then elderly care chaplain in eventide home), now back on the field at Newcastle City Temple.
I describe myself as a Conservative Evangelical with an appreciation of things ecumenical and liturgical. I am not charismatic/pentecostal; that's why I worry about some of the modern stuff/thinking that has come into the Army from American, Canada and Australia (and through the Roots movement - it's heavily based on charismatic theology and practice and I think it sits uncomfortably with Army Biblical theology and practice.
I love to hear Biblical expository preaching instead of the life-enhancement, lifestyle improvement stuff you hear on the God Channel.
I think TSA has a great future under God as he uses who we are, not what some people think we should become.
ps I think Shaw Clifton is God's man for this time - excellent fellow!

Welcome to Cyber Corps Major.
There is a sticky I would be gateful if yu would read and comment on.
It is an attempt to find out what our purpose should be here in Cyber Corps.

One question I wuold like to ask you Major
Do you prefer your soldiers to call you by your rank or by your Christian name?
I know it is accepted in many Corps that the officers are called by their Christian names.
I can't do it. An officer has earned the right to be called by his or her rank and that is how it should be.
I personally see it as symptomatic of the problems that are causing the Army to decline here in Britain.

I refer to myself as Major and Antony - many people call me major, many call me Antony. I think it would be arrogant to correct them. I have known people to call me by my rank and show be the least love and greatest disrespect. People have called me Antony and have been loyal. I tend not to notice too much what they call me.

People only seem to use my rank if they are cross with me!

Respect is not earned just because a person is an officer. There are many lay people who have earned my respect over the years.
Strangely enough it seems that the officers who insist upon being called by their rank are those who least deserve respect.
If the SA is to survive in the 21st C we must accept that some things need to change. We shouldn't shift on doctrinal issues but need to be more flexible about fringe issues such as rank and uniform. Maybe the army's decline is due to it's inflexibility and refusal to adapt to a changing culture?

I'm not one for formalities and titles. I was one of only a few people that called a minister by his first name instead of pastor at one church I went to. Considering we don't have any officers at the corps I attend we don't need to worry about formalities. I do like to think that if I did come across someone who objected to me using their name then I would work hard to call them by rank instead.

When I asked the question though, i didn't use the word respect. I agree with everybody Respect, be it for officer, local officer, soldier or adherent, is something to be earned.
The word I used was 'right'
Having trained and been commissioned as an officer I believe they then have the right to be called by their rank.
My new CO is a young guy fresh from training, who I can give 20 years to (almost).
But he remains my CO, and as such I will call him Captain.
If we met socially, away from Army, then I would feel able to call him Jonathon, but not otherwise.

The only problem I have with this is that I don't believe we should enforce our rights in every situation. I can assure you that if i was an officer then I would want you to call me by my first name not captain. Have you ever considered some might actually prefer to be called by their name? It is fine to stand up for other peoples rights but sometimes we need to ignore our own rights for God.

I think perhaps this further emphasises that there are big differences between the Army in Britain and the Army in Australia.
I'm not saying that is bad or anything, just that the differences exist

Yeah that was partly my point although I am positive that there are officers in Oz who would want to be called by their rank rather than their first name. Of course it is also a generational difference as well.

Hello all, my name is Howard and I'm a member of the Army in Manchester UK. I used to belong to my Corps in the late 80's and early 90's. Then I left and eventually I married and moved to the U.S..I came back to the Corps last year after my marriage ended. It felt good to be back amongst old friends again, but unfortunately I seem to be not getting along with my officer at the moment. Thanks for reading and looking forward to chatting along the way.

Hello Howard,
It's good to see another Notherner on the site! I live down near Heathrow, but my parents were officers in the Manchester division (now called the Central North Division), but they are over in Yorkshire now. What corps did you use to go to?

I wasn't actually saying all people who prefer to us rank instead of name are old. Besides when I said that I was more thinking my grandmothers generation not to mention you don't know my age. I could be right behind you or a bit older.

Hi Surviving.
I just moved out of Central North division, and had a very difficult time up there. I survived - just - and am recovering slowly.
Survival is possible, but we change through what we experience.

Could well be
My dad was a salvationist when he met my mum (she was Primitive methodist) and he laso stopped agoing when they got married.
Many years later they are now both soldiers but made sure my brother and I were both raised in the Army
