View Full Version : The Band Room

Welcome to the Cyber Corps bandroom.

Sorry it's a bit untidy at the moment, but you know what it's like when you just moved in somewhere.:D

We've got a bit of a problem though that I hope you all might be able to help with. There are loads of different instruments for the band from cornets down to E flat bass.

What we don't seem to have are any bandsmen and women. Nor do we appear to have any music.:help:

This is where you all come in. We need volunteers for the band. So anyone who can play any of the instruments, please post and let us know. I doesn't matter if you are not too good yet either. This is cyber space. By the time we've finished remastering it all, we'll sound like the International Staff Band.:D :D

And can you also post and tell us what your favouite band music is, so we can start to build up a collection.

No band practice as yet. We'll wait until someone sets up a Cyber Songsters and co ordinate the two.;)

To get us going, I can manage either the Bass or Euphonium (but not both, not enough mouths).

My favourite band piece is an old march called 'Star Hill'.

I'll go for Euph or Trombone, and have two boys for tenor horn.

I've gotta say I'm with chaplianjared on that one - I'm afraid all I'm usefull for is clapping my hands!

Well that's great. If you can clap, that means you can keep the beat, so you two can be the percussion section.

And with two tenor horns, trombone, euph and/or bass, all we need are a couple of cornets and we're in business.

Hallelujah!!

YAY for the Salvation Army Band!! I always enjoy hearing the band in our local Santa Claus parade.

*here comes forU with a French Horn she hasn't played in about 13 years* Anyone willing to refresh my memory on how to play this thing? :D

Andy Broadley
12th January 2005, 02:10 PM
Don't worry, it's cyber music. We'll just remaster it. It'll sound great. Anyone got any idea where we can get tune books for the french horn?

I think we have to write the music out by hand for french horn.

Andy Broadley
12th January 2005, 05:03 PM
Ummmm....thats nearly a thousand tunes (and that's just the basic tune books), could take a while. We could always try the flugal horn music and see how it sounds on the french horn. I have a feeling it could sould OK.

Still no cornet players?

This is the International Staff Band, probably one of the finest bands in the world. At one time, none of these people knew how to play an instrument. Get the idea....?

Welcome to the cornet section.

Heave, just a bit further. Nearly got it. There, done it. * sits down exhausted from the effort of dragging this thread all the way up from the bottom of the page*

Right, better tidy up in here a bit. O yes, while I think about it. I hear that we are trying to modernise some of the old songs. Good Idea. If anyone wants to post their favourite 'traditional' Army song, I'll try and find some 'new' music to go with it.

Also, I would welcome any combinations of 'old' and 'new' that you have already come up with.

Abiel
25th January 2005, 11:00 AM
OKay. I really like 'Hold the fort'

Andy Broadley
26th January 2005, 03:41 AM
Hmmm...good one. OK, we'll see what we can come up with.

In the meantime, I'd like to post a request of my own. For a couple of days now I have had a bit of an old songster piece in my head. It's called 'Become aware of Him' and was always my fave songster piece.

If anyone has all the words I'd be very grateful.

Must go. Tootle pip. *wanders off seeking tea*

Well, I'm a lot rusty but I bet you I can pick up the cornet again, if no one minds listening to me practice. My daughter plays baritone (which is almost bigger than she is) and a valve trombone. She's learning guitar, and wants to take piano. (Praise the father for gifts, no?) If you're looking for singers, I'm your girl

As for music, there's nothing like a rousing march!

Praise the Lord, the band is complete.

2 cornets - yourself and chickette

2 tenor horns - Tracy's children

1 Baritone - your daughter

1 trombone - the 'gaffer'

1 bass - yours truely

1 flugal horn or French horn

1 Bass drum - Sascha (sorry YPSM Fitzpatrick. Must show respect. She's an officer now);)

Its not the thought of you in leadership that's funny Sascha. Well, OK. ^_^
It's the thought of you convincing B that he has to come along for the ride!!
"But I don't wanna be in charge" Hmm, I can see me saying that some time too.
Actually, I think my line was "You want to give me responsibility?!? You can't do that!!!" Something tells me it didn't work....

Andy Broadley

That would be as in '2 falls, 2 submissions, or a knockout to decide the winner', would it?

elm0
30th January 2005, 11:11 PM
No, that'd be as in Sascha saying "B, I need you to be the head of this relationship, I submit to your leadership. So what are we having for lunch?"

Sascha Fitzpatrick
31st January 2005, 03:34 AM
That's pretty accurate actually...

Evangelina
31st January 2005, 03:43 AM
Sounds like relatively-subtle manipulation and leadership-from-behind, to me... :D
(getting someone to lead by standing behind them is really a form of indirect leadership, isn't it?)

Sascha Fitzpatrick
31st January 2005, 03:52 AM
LOL...

It's interesting - not sure B's quite used to being 'head of household' kinda thing - doing it gradually, so he gets used to it (he's used to more 'separate ideals', from past relationships, from what I can tell).

Haven't had any real dramas about it... it usually ends up that we come to the same conclusion, and if we don't, we both put forward our reasons why we want it a certain way, and then I leave the final decision up to him.

The only time that's happened was with a fridge he bought for the house - funnily enough, he chose the one I preferred!

Having a good rationale is always a good thing, with this submission thing...

*Wanders in to see if theres anyone around*

Very quiet around here tonight. Britains in bed, Australia's at work, and Canada have gone AWOL. So I'm wandering round looking for someone to talk to. Went to see the Anglicans and got into an arguement about Henry 8th, I can't handle the Pentecostals at this time of the morning, and theres only so many times you can play the ABC of girls names before you go stark raving bonkers!! Should start a thread called the ABC of pointless threads!

Getting really tired again, be glad to get home to bed when this shift ends at 6am.

Evangelina
2nd February 2005, 01:14 AM
I really don't like pointless threads. I don't know why :)

I'm kind of around. Start a convo on a thread in here, or PM me, and I'll respond. In between bouts of hard work, of course :D

Spend Summer in Tasmania and Winter in Cairns (north queensland) - be JUST about perfect I reckon! :)

Just to cheer up Andy -

A butcher just out of trade school applies for and gets a job in northwest America, skinning and cutting up the kills of local hunters. The first job he gets is to cut up a moose to put in the freezer. He finally gets the moose cut up and is putting it into bags and marking them with the contents: chops, rump steak, ribs, sirloin, etc.

When he finishes with the cuts he knows, he is left with a pile of unidentifiable parts.

At a loss as to what to do with them, he finally puts them all into one bag and labels them ...

'Moosellaneous'

Might be some around here someplace.

A lot of dust though.

Need to give the old bandroom a bit of a clean:)

Well, start huffing and puffing and blowing that dust out!

Looking forward to it

Went to band practice.

Didn't play (was invited but had no wish to ruin the practice for everyone).

They have leant me an old Eb bass and some tune books so I can practice at home.

lol....shipping might be a little costly.

Not the lightest of instruments.

The Lord 'blessed' me with a double whammy.

Lips too big to be able to play a cornet or tenor horn, but not enough musical ability to be able to master the Euphomium.

So I wound up on the heavy artillery.

You get these lovely pictures at Christmas of salvation Army bands out in the streets playing carols.

And it's usually those prima donna cornet payers you see, looking very dapper.

You never see the poor guy who is breaking his back lugging the Eb about.

A week into this years campaign

Started last Monday at the church in our village.

Yesterday was a full day at the Morrisons store in Knottingly. C.O skived off. Some lame excuse about having to attend the Training Collage.:D :D :D

Good day though. Received another two invitations to play during the course of the day. One we have had to turn down as we are fully booked. the other we are trying to see if we can fit in.

I play baritone at the moment...but I do have my own trombone...tenor horn...my husband has an Eb and a Bb bass. I prefer to play trombone though. Oh, and I sold my cornet about 6 months ago, so I'm afraid I can't help on cornet. Besides, my lips wouldn't fit in the mouth piece!

Thats my problem as well.

But when you are out there lugging that Bass a bout and caroling, you really wish you could be one of those prima donna cornet layers instead of being on the heavy artillery

elm0, I think you will enjoy this little tale from a band practice. I had been invited to a practice somewhere. They loaned me a bass trombone (a BEAUTIFUL Holton BbF)- my home instrument - but I think they were desperate;) . One of the euphoniums was getting grilled and here is what the bansmaster said:

BANDMASTER: "This is how you play. You look at the
music... You look at the time signature... You ooo at the key... Then you take a deep breath....

(and then an Eb Bass player next to me mutters from the safety behind his bass:)

Eb BASS PLAYER: "And then you pray!":D

Anyway, I play in a brass band in London and I am looking for some players...does anyone have any suggestions?

BoazB
16th January 2007, 05:45 PM
I haven't a clue what you are on about!

Five Roses is regular tea as comes off a tea bush. Rooibos is a tea that is made from a reed-like bush, and is more red in colour. It has a VERY different taste, and contains no tannin. It is meant to have great anti-oxidants and other health properties. Is also used in cosmetics (I am told:scratch: )

However, some guys just don't like it because they prefer normal tea or coffee.

Sorry I can't help with the brass player thing. Hope you succeed though. :)

BoazB
16th January 2007, 05:51 PM
The bush from which Rooibos tea came from was originally only found (so I am told) in a small place called Clanwilliam in South Africa, also famous for a Lutheran Mission station called Wupperthal. Rooibos is now an export industry. I wouldn't be surprised if it is now available in the UK (in health shops or shops that specialise in South African products maybe?). The tea is also meant to make one very calm - I drink it as much as possible!

hey i meet a lady in zimbabwe who loves that tea. although it was the most expensive tea you could buy.

on other news i quit my jobs today so i can start a new one in two weeks. it was harder than i though and i did not leave feeling as good about it as i thought i would mainly because my boss is weak and turned everything back on me and i found out there is rumors going around work about me. still it was nice to say what i have wanted to say for so long now. i had to go right from that to my other work for a shift and i cried when i gave this boss my resignation. partly coz i was sad to do it partly coz i was still so worked up over the other job. Im glad its over just gota get though my next two weeks.
