View Full Version : My First Sunday at a Catholic Church

Part IV of my series, lol...

So, today I attended mass, my first ever visit to a Catholic Church. Why am I sharing it with all of you Lutherans, and not the Catholics? Because what I have to say isnt' that flattering.

The church was huge and very elegant with statues of Mary, Jesus, and the Saints (very large statues) in the walls. There were pictures, paintings, statues, carvings, and all kinds of stuff all over the inside of the church (which was to be expected from a Catholic church).

When I first came in, no one greeted me. But that didn't matter to me; I'm not that social anyway.

So I went in and sat down in the pew in the very back of the church. The Priest stood by the door as the people came in. At some point before the service began, an usher came up and spoke to the priest. I heard the usher swear using God's name in vain, right to the priest. I knew immediately that something was wrong.

And then the priest went up to the front and began to address the mass. It seemed to me that he didn't take his job seriously and reverently. He mumbled on and was like "Yeah, cool," and "So anyways, where was I? Ha ha!" He seemed to be having way too much fun and not respecting the church or God at all.

I didn't sense the presence of God at any point in the service. It all felt fake and purposeless. It was clear to me too that although the surroundings seemed to say "We stand humbly before God and worship him," the people and priest seemed to say, "We don't have respect for this, we're just here to do our obligations." There were exceptions, however. I saw one elderly lady and one young man who seemed to be getting some serious business done with God. But otherwise I could hear ushers whispering loudly and chuckling in the back during the reading of the Gospel, and many other signals that told me this was not being used as a house of God.

In conclusion, the church I attended today was not serious about God or serving Him. Hopefully this isn't a trend with the Catholic church.

Very sad indeed that any church would conduct services like that.

Try attending an Eastern Orthodox service. I'm sure you'll find yourself welcomed there by the grace of God Himself. We are very reverent and loving people.

That is quite an experience. I've been to Catholic weddings & funerals, but never saw anything like that at one those. I have no idea what a mass is like. I did go and visit a friend of the family who is a nun in one of the local Catholic churches here. She is a very warm and friendly, loving person, and one of the priests greeted me as though I was a part of their congregation! He knew I wasn't. Well, anyway, it surprises me a bit.

Please know that whatever you perceived to be going on at that Church is not representative of every Catholic Church.

I think that you find that sort of thing in all denominations. Perhaps you have not found the right congregation.

I wouldn't think that was typical either, so if you are really curious about the Catholics, try another one before giving up on them.....

Where would I be able to find Orthodox churches in the phone book? It's not listed as a denomination with the other denominations...

This was part IV of my series. I have attended 2 Lutheran churches and have had the best experiences, in fact, in those two Lutheran churches. And before those I attended an Anglican church.

Yes, I agree. I will try another one next Sunday.

If you can't find a listing under just "Orthodox" try a few different listings - like Eastern Orthodox, or Greek Orthodox, or Russian Orthodox, or Antiochian Orthodox. They're all basically the same, but you never know how they choose to list themselves in the phone book.

You could also try looking at the alphabetical listing of churches and look for names that start with "Saint" or "Holy" - like "St. Seraphim Orthodox Church" or "Holy Trinity Orthodox Church". Hope that helps.

In my parish, people just walk in and sit down. Occasionally an usher or someone will greet me, but this is not normally what is done.

So I went in and sat down in the pew in the very back of the church. The Priest stood by the door as the people came in. At some point before the service began, an usher came up and spoke to the priest. I heard the usher swear using God's name in vain, right to the priest. I knew immediately that something was wrong.

This is very bad manners for the usher to swear but it is hardly indicitive of the whole Church.

The ushers appear to be very rude. I do not know how you could determine how attendees or the priest were not being serious about worshipping. I do not doubt that you got this feeling from the Mass but this might just be a misunderstanding of Catholic liturgical worship. You seem to be more interested in watching other people than in concentrating on your own worship during Mass.

In conclusion, the church I attended today was not serious about God or serving Him. Hopefully this isn't a trend with the Catholic church.

Please feel free to post this on OBOB, and I am sure you will get some friendly Catholic responses.
