Hello! I found this site a few months ago and registered, but have put off making my first post for some reason. I figured I could at least introduce myself.
My name is John. I'm 29 years old, and will be getting married in a little over 3 months to the most wonderful woman in the world.
I was born and raised in Texas and moved to Rochester, MN, in 1993, about a month before my 18th birthday. I've been here ever since. However, within the next couple months, I will be moving to Southwest Iowa to join my fiancee, who took a job in her hometown back in November. I am looking forward to being able to spend more time with her after 3 months of a long-distance relationship.
I was baptized in a Baptist church a few months before my 10th birthday, and I attended church fairly regularly until I was in 9th grade. My family switched to a United Methodist church when I was in 7th grade. After 9th grade, I stopped attending church altogether. I never lost my faith, but I just drifted away from the church.
Other than a few visits to various churches (both Baptist and Methodist) a few years ago, I hadn't attended church since 9th grade. That all changed in April 2004. I met the woman who is now my fiancee. She is the daughter of a LCMS pastor. She invited me to attend the church she had joined here in Rochester. I had never attended a Lutheran church before, but at the first service, I knew I had found my new church home. It takes a lot to make me miss a service now.
I am currently going through adult confirmation classes and will be confirmed on January 23, 2005. Soon afterwards, I will be moving down to Iowa and Bridget (my fiancee) and I will join a church down there. We haven't decided yet whether to join one of her dad's two congregations or one of the many other LCMS churches in the area around her hometown.
Well, that's enough rambling from me for now. I look forward to contributing to CF, and to continue learning from the many great teachers who frequent this board.
Thanks for reading.

I love Minnesota...except for the winters. We lived in Iowa for quite a while...Fort Dodge. GREAT Lutheran territory. Great place to raise a family. A little short on excitement but some see that as a good thing. :D

You said that you had moved to Rochester. Are you still there now? When I was 6 weeks old I became very ill and my parents had to take me down to the Mayo to have tests run on me. Found out that I was Hypothyroid and didn't even have the gland to produce thyroxine into my system. I was lucky that they caught it when they did or I might have become mentally challenged (though many think I still am at times ;) ).
I am glad that you have found a home in the LCMS and that you find it a good place to be. God's blessing on your impending marriage to such a beautiful woman. I am up here in the Twin Cities (Apple Valley) and with brief stints in Colorado, Wyoming and Texas, I have lived 40 of my 43 years in Minnesota.
I hate the Green Bay Packers so that makes me a true Minnesotan.
Nice to have you here John and look forward to reading your posts.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm sure you are a wonderful woman, but I'm sure you'll understand that I'm just a *little* biased.

Yeah, I sometimes wonder why I was crazy enough to stay up here after my first winter (one of the coldest on record). But now I realize that God led me here so that I could meet Bridget. We actually talked about moving down to Iowa when we have kids, but we will be doing it sooner because of her new job. I do love it down there when I get down there for a visit. It's all part of God's plan for us, and I will go where He leads me.
Ah...one of our strongest methods of evangelism...marriage! ;) And I am with you...unless I am sick I generally do not miss. I understand completely. Even if we are out of town I look for some place to go.
Same here. When I'm down in Iowa, we attend one of Bridget's father's churches. When we went to South Carolina in September for her brother's wedding, we attended church with her uncle. I walked a mile on 1/4 inch thick ice to get to church this past Sunday since I had no other way there.
Jump right in John...we are happy to have you in our little CF family!

And I look forward to becoming part of this family.

Yes, I'm still in Rochester, at least for another month or so until I move down to Iowa to be with my fiancee and prepare for our wedding.
I'm neither a Vikings nor Packers fan. I still support my Dallas Cowboys, and truth be told, I'm not really much of a football fan. I am marrying into a family of Packer-backers, though.
Thanks to you, and everyone else here for the warm welcome. Makes me wish I'd come out of lurking sooner.

Congrats on your engagement and approaching marriage. God's blessings.

I was a Packers fan before there was a Vikings team - before a guy by the name of Vince showed up in GB. But I have been disappointed enough over the past 35 years (took me 10 years to transition to being a Vikings' fan) enough to be a Vikings fan now (and a Packers fan). The only advantage of last year's collapse and this year's collapse over the 1970's teams - it is happening a little earlier than normal. ;)

Thanks again for the warm welcome. From reading this forum while lurking, I could tell that you were all a great bunch of people. You are proving it by the way you're making me feel like part of the group. Of course, I've noticed that about a majority of the Lutherans I've met since I started attending a Lutheran church. I look forward to making CF, and especial TC-CL my online home for quite a while.
I have learned a lot about the Lutheran faith by reading this board. This is becoming the first site I check every day, and sometimes I don't even leave it until it's time for me to go to work or bed.
I also want to say that I'm looking forward to the FAQ that y'all are putting together. I can tell from reading your posts that everyone involved knows their stuff.

I don't think I've ever known a Bridget until I met my fiancee. Now you make the 3rd one I'm acquainted with in some way. My future sister-in-law's best friend is also named Bridget. In another name-related coincidence, my future SIL has the same name as my youngest sister (Amber). Things can get quite confusing when we all get together or even just talking about our families and friends. Add that to the fact that my dad's name is also John, and you've got 2 Johns, 2 Bridgets and 2 Ambers. The wedding will probably be the first time that all 6 of us will be in the same place at the same time.

The other Bridget I knew went to the elementary school I went to, and because of that, we were "friends."
In my life, I know way too many Johns and Jennifers. Almost every Jennifer has been given some type of nickname with her name/looks/interests. I've had Jen, Jenny, Jennifer, Jenny-fur, Jenny-red, and I still have a JennyLynn (although, I call her Lynn).
Bridgets seem to be fairly rare. . .

Let me invite you now to our once a month rockin' youth services at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. They are the first Sunday of each month at 7:00 pm in the church basement. I front the live band and give the message. Though geared for teens and early twenty-somethings its a really great time for anyone who loves the Lord and likes modern worship.

All this talk about the midwest is making me sooooooooo homesick. I am from Michigan, living in Maryland, but spent 3 of the best years of my life in Fargo, ND. I just LOVE that place. Crazy me, huh?
My parents offered Erik, my fiance, 5 acres of land and a goat if we move back to Michigan. Erik says, "5 acres- really?" I say, "A goat! Hooray!" he he he

I'd have to go with the prime rib myself. I'm not a big seafood fan, except for shrimp and certain kinds of fish. But I love prime rib. It's a good thing, too, because that is my future father-in-law's specialty.
I've definitely noticed that people down there are friendly. That's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to getting down there and away from the fairly large city of Rochester. I grew up in a small town and look forward to getting back into that environment.
I can't think of anything I might need, but if you know of any job openings down there, let me know. I'm currently working in fast food as a manager, and would be open to staying in that field. I'm also willing to try something new.

You're never too old (or young) to be a smart aleck, but it is an art that takes a great deal of training to master.
Also, I've read many of your posts, and you are most certainly NOT a "mumbling irrelevant old codger." I have gained a great deal of knowledge reading your posts. And I look forward to learning much more from you, both theologically and in the fine art of punnery. ;)

Looks like you're got most of the other Lutherans here beat. The only way that you might be able to improve your standing in life, is to move to Canada!:D
Go Vikings! I definetely enjoyed watching them destroy Green Bay in the Wild Card game.

You like the Vikings? I like the Dallas Cowboys. And I live in California (49'er territory)...and living to tell it, which is amazing. :sorry:
Cowboys?
That kind of reminds me of living in Edmonton, going to Oilers games, and cheering for their arch rivals, the Calgary Flames(it's hockey, y'all). Good times.
Those 49er fans sure as heck didn't have much to cheer about this year.:P

You're got some good things going there:
-you're currently living in the #1 US state(Minnesota)
-you're attending the best possible denomination, the LCMS
-and you're engaged to a girl that you love

I'd say you summed it up pretty well. I love living in Minnesota, but I look forward to moving to Iowa (mainly because that's where my fiancee is).
I love attending an LCMS church. In addition to my home church, I have attended both churches at which my future father-in-law is the pastor. I have also attended one in the Greenville, SC area back in September. After my first service at Grace, I knew I had found my new church home.
And yes, I am definitely very much in love with my fiancee. Of course, right now, I'm really missing her. We talk on the phone almost everyday, but this is the longest we've gone without seeing each other since we've been together. I haven't seen her since the Monday after Christmas, when I had to come back to Rochester after spending the weekend down there. I just look on the bright side, though. In less than 3 months, we will be joined together for the rest of our lives, and I can't wait. :D
I can't really say much about the moving to Canada part. I'm sure it's a wonderful country, but I'm heading in the other direction. Gotta follow my heart and where God is leading me, and right now that's Iowa.

Thank you. I'm glad to be here. As I've said in some other posts, this has definitely become my online home.
You have a blessed day as well. I hope your work day goes well.

John,
10.5 years ago, I moved to Texas to be with my fiancee. We married a year later and then I moved her back to Minnesota. :D Believe it or not she is thriving better here than she ever did there or growing up in the Tropics. We have 2 wonderful children that are in the midst of celebrating birthdays 5 and this Saturday 8.
It doesn't matter whether you live in Iowa, Minnesota or any other State so long as together you work 100% to making the relationship work. And if you have a Christocentric relationship it will be that much easier. It is also good that both of you are together on the same church. mixed denomination marriages are as difficult as mixed faith marriages.
God's blessings on both of you as you enter this new chapter in your life.:crossrc:

Thank you. And I realize that it doesn't matter where we live, as long as we're together and keep our relationship strong.
We have kept and plan to continue keeping Christ at the center of our relationship. Our pastor told us during our premarriage counseling that it takes 3 to make a marriage work: the husband and wife, of course, but the most important part of the relationship is God. (I'm sure he put it a little more eloquently than that, but I just got up and my brain isn't completely functioning yet. )

Hockey.... I miss it so much!!! I had Center Ice just so I could watch my beloved Joe Nieuwendyk. I loved all those Oilers/Stars playoff series. :D
