Do Lutherans celebrate the Feast of Kings on Jan. 6th? DUe to usual holiday stress, my mother has declared that we celebrate the birth of Christ, exchange gifts and hold on feast on this day instead- starting next year.

Not sure. . I think some do, some don't. We do acknowledge Epiphany starting on January 6th.

What is Epiphany exactly and how do we celebrate it?
My church doesn't seem to offer catechism for adults. Should I demand to sit in with the kids so that I can learn all of this stuff?

Surely you could purchase through your church "Luther's Small Catechism" for yourself. :preach:

SG...I always felt I was cheated because I did not take confirmation. I was brought into the Lutheran church through an adult inquirers class. I have probably attended well over half a dozen of these same kind of classes since...in helping out with those interested in becoming members...but it just isn't them same. After all of that exposure I still never walked away with a good Lutheran understanding.
I don't know what the answer is. I do know, however, some churches do a far, far better job of catechizing their new members than others but unfortunately there is not a uniform approach.
What helped me was taking a class in Doctrine offered by the district. We even had to memorize the Small Catechism like the kids do! I was a bit afraid of this when I first started since I hadn't been brought up Lutheran but I have to say it probably was one of the best things I ever did in terms of study. Maybe your district offers something similar?
Peace
Rose
Edit...Oh and BTW...you probably wouldn't learn about the Feast of Epiphany from a doctrine class but it would be covered in a class on worship that includes a study of the church calendar year...I took that one, too! ;)

Epiphany occurs on January 6. This is the day that commemorates when the Magi found the baby Jesus. January 5 (though for some reason, most celebrate on January 6. ..which is confusing) is "12th night" as in "the 12 days of Christmas." (January 1 is "the octave of our Lord [also "the circumcision of our Lord" and "the name of our Lord" - all having to do with the Jewish traditions of circumcizing and naming the child on the eighth day].
The first Sunday of Epiphany is usually "the baptism of our Lord."
Then, the rest of epiphany is his ministry beginning. . .
Epiphany ends when Lent starts. . .
I'm SUCH a church nerd. . .

I have already read it! www.bookofconcord.org (http://www.bookofconcord.org)
I'd just like to do it as a class. I can ask the church if we do a "doctrine course" or some such thing.
Bridget- I am a church nerd, too, but I haven't been it it that long. Right now I am reading Henry Chadwick's History of the Early Church. Nerdy!
