I thought some of you might think this would be kind of fun, so I'm copying it here.

Dear friends in Christ,

You can do your part to make the world a more beautiful place -- and you don't even have to put on a pair of coveralls and trek alongside the highway picking up empty cans. You are invited to participate in the Cross+Wise 2005 Theological Litter Clean-up and Internet Beautification Project.

The so-called "Information Superhighway" is like any other highway: it can lead us to all kinds of places. We can't control what happens all along the highway, but we can do our best to keep our stretch of the highway clear of litter. That's the idea behind the 2005 Beautification Project.

It is said that one man's trash is another man's treasure. But there is one treasure that is valuable to all: Jesus Christ, and His saving work on the cross for us. While "inspirational" emails may comfort us for a while, there will come a time when only Our Savior will bring us comfort and hope. With that in mind, the Beautification Project has a three-fold purpose:

1. To remind us to examine all "inspirational" writings for Christ and Him crucified, as the Apostle Paul exhorted.

2. By the restoration of theological litter, to help us understand that it is, indeed, possible for "relevant" and "inspirational" writings to remain Christ-centered without losing their relevance or inspiring nature.

3. To proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who might never have heard it, despite reading many well-meaning "inspirational" emails.

How can you help? Search your incoming email box for "inspirational" messages. When you open those messages, look for Christ! If something is amiss -- if we are directed back to ourselves and our actions or emotions, rather than to Christ -- [Removed by Moderator- Please use the PM System]

One note: We're not interested in going into other people's yards to pick up their theological litter. Please don't send examples from websites--unless you are directed to the site in one of the many emails making the rounds. For now, we're just interested in reclaiming a Christ-centered focus in the realm of the forwarded email.

Let it never be said that this project is a vain striving for incessant doctrinal purification at the expense of the Gospel, however. This is not merely a gripe session. We will select some of these messages for revision or restoration, and find or create a Christ-centered alternative. Once those are complete, we will release our favorites, with the hope that our fellow Christians will join us in spreading the word about our only true comfort: the promise of our salvation in Christ Jesus.

Christ's blessings,
David Brazeal

Many of the "inspirational" e-mails I get aren't so "off the mark" as thy are nausiatingly sappy. I will send them on, if they escape my "trash bin" first!

I'll take 'em all, sculpturegirl! From the nauseatingly sappy to the downright heretical!

And I know most of them aren't really bad, in the sense that you won't go to hell for believing what they say. But I think when push comes to shove, they're not particularly comforting, either.
