View Full Version : The Wisemen - from an PBS special

With epiphany just around the corner, the wisemen's arrival and the celebration of the Baptism of our Lord, I figured a little bit of information on the wisemen from a PBS special would be interesting
-----------------------------------------
The way we get Magi is probably from the word Magoi (Magoy? with two g's? Sorry .. .I only heard it on television, so I don't know how to spell it.)
This means they were probably reguarded as magicians. It is from this same word that we derive our English word "magicians."
If anything, they were very brilliant astonomers and may have even been astrologers.
Going by this, to try to place the birthdate of Jesus, scientists have looked to what could've happened in the sky to produce the bright star to the east.
In 7 B.C. in the constallation of Pices, there would've been a bright star. The same is true for Aires in 6 B.C. However, the problem lies in the fact that these would not have been to the East of the wisemen.
However, also in 6 B.C., there was an eclipse of Jupitar. This would've been reguarded as a "morning star." It was to the East of the wisemen. If this is all true, astronomers and scientists would place the birth of Jesus on April 17, 6 B.C.
The tradition of bringing Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh is to find out which one the baby would take. If the baby takes the gold, he is an earthly king. If the baby takes the myrrh, he is going to be a physician. If the baby takes the frankincense, he is a heavenly king. Of course, tradition says that Jesus took all three things - being the great healer, truly God and truly man.
Also, the magi may have arrived at the house of Joseph and Mary when Jesus may have been as old as two. The traveling would've taken a very long time from where they came and to where they were going.
----------------------------
Other than that, the season of Epiphany here in Louisiana means king cake!

Interesting. Seems I have seen something such as this (reading or TV, cannot remember) before. :)

Well, it was stuff from PBS - it was on just the other night. I don't know if they've run it before or not.

I do watch PBS. Quite likely that is where I saw it originally, though forget it in detail. You have to watch out for PBS, though. I saw a program about two years ago they had an archaelogy dig, and claimed they found the bones of Jesus. I go..."yeah, right!" ... but then they buried all of it again. Uh huh! They would parade that through the streets if they did find it! I don't believe them at all.

I like PBS too, especially nature shows, some history stuff and Opera, but you have really be careful what you believe, because I think they are very liberal and mostly non-Christian, which is sad.

Really? I hadn't heard of that one. . .in the wisemen one, they talked about finding the bones of the wisemen. . .once I thought I heard them say "Jesus" though and I got confused, but I was also reading, so I asked my sister and she has said it was the wisement, which would make sense.
I have no idea about the bones of Jesus thing. . .I mean, the program! Obviously one isn't going to find the bones of Jesus!

I think Michael Moore (or his like) would fake such a thing. This world is becoming crazy like that.

Naw! Really? I can't believe Michael would do such a thing for money or fame. ^_^ You know, I feel really sorry for people like that, can you imagine what his life must be like? I'd rather live in the desert and eat scorpions and rattle snakes.

It's only big spiders that I don't like all that much. Spiders don't really bother me. Roaches, however, freak me out! I hate them - and living in Louisiana, I see LOTS of them!
