I have a few theories, and am currently studying exaclty why the miracles of Jesus were recorded. He performed countless miracles, and yet only a small percentage were recorded...
Still....what did these people he healed represent to us in our modern times?

Plain and simple, the people healed by Jesus show us that God cares about us as individuals, not just as a group or a body of believers. Jesus preached to the masses, he fed the masses, he gave Lord's supper to a group, but all the healings, he did each of those individually. He didn't gather up all the sick people in a town and heal them, he healed individuals, loving them one by one, relating to them one by one.
The healings are a lesson in the personal love of God for each person, for those who seek him.

The Miracles of Christ were done for the following:
1. To demonstrate The Lords Power
2. To confirm his Word to the People.
Same goes for the Apostles after the Lord's departure into Heaven.
Those signs and wonders gifts, were given to confirm the Word and were used to prove to the unbelievers that the Apostles were who they said that they were...
Once the temple in Jerusalem was distroyed in 70 AD and the Word of God was completed and Isreal finally Rejected Jesus as the Massiah, The Signs and Wonders ceased. They were never promised to the Christians of today. The teaching that they are is a distortion of God's Word and is the Modern day Apostasy as mentioned in 2 Timothy 3.

I was thinking about the mindset of the peoples of that time.
If you were sick or had a disease, then you were unclean and considered sinful. You could not go to the temple to worship, no priest could bless you or indeed even approach you. It was as if you were cut off from God. The diseased lived in villages or camps cut off from the rest of society, even their own families, seemingly without hope for even practising worship as prescribed in the Law...
In particular I'm thinking of Mark 5 and the woman with the issue of blood as a picture...of the hopelessness of the sick in those times...
Could this be composed as an evangelical message, her disease, loss of hope and suffering be a picture of a modern time addict/alcoholic?

Not every disease made a person unclean. The Bible is very specific about which diseases made someone unclean. The woman who was bleeding would have been ceremonially unclean, but that would not have prevented her from being around her family or from going to temple or synagogue. It meant she could not have relations with her husband and that anything she sat on would be unclean, of course (they didn't have tampax in those days), but women were separated outside the temple itself and she would have been permitted into the court of the women for worship and instruction. She would not have been banished to a separate village. After all, women bleed every month, and it would have been highly impractical for all women to have been banished every month when their families needed to be taken care of.
Jesus can and does heal drug addicts and alcoholics, but not everyone or instantly. God heals who he heals when he heals for his own reasons. Not because we demand it of him or because he owes us something, but to serve his own purposes and in his own time.

a woman in those days was not as important as a horse, so for Jesus to reach out to a woman was earth shaking. And this is the mercy of God, he takes the seemingly unimportant and give them the biggest hug. And in two thousand years, nothing has changed, in the middle east.
So when you walk down the street and you see some one that may need a hug, give them one of yours.

I'm still studying this....the case of leprosy and blindness and maming etc...I dunno...there's something pretty obvious I guess I'm missing when trying to tie these diseases (thought of as unconfessed sin in those days) and the diseases of sin that are of today....maybe I'm just tired heh
See y'all in the morning...

What? No healing or feeding the hungry out of simple compassion?

I have a few theories, and am currently studying exaclty why the miracles of Jesus were recorded. He performed countless miracles, and yet only a small percentage were recorded...
Still....what did these people he healed represent to us in our modern times?
These tell us several things:
His superiority over nature: there is nothing He could not do.
His caring nature: He loved us.
It was proof to His followers: many asked for signs, right after they would see a miracle. Ironic, but indicative of their blindness
Many of the miracles had morals: this I will get into more in depth.
In John, two miracles tell a lot about God's ability to help:
The woman at the well (John 4)
Jesus' miracle: knowing of her past deeds in detail
This woman was getting water during the 6th hour (noon), the hottest part of the day from a well far from where she lived. These were both very strange for Jewish cultures (Samaratans were half Jewish and half Greek/Assyrian). This was because she was an outcast. This was probably because of her promiscuity (5 husbands and a man currently).
Why is this significant? The Samaritans were the lowest people in the Jewish cultures eyes. They were mixed blood, meaning they were horrible in Jewish eyes. Jews would typically go into pagan lands to get from Judea to Galilee rather than cross through the much more convenient Samaria. And, not only was she an outcast of the Jews, of which Jesus was one, she was an outcast of the Samaritans because of her actions. Not to mention, she was a woman and rabbis would not talk to ANY women in public, not even their own family. So, Jesus is showing that no matter how much you are cast aside from the world for your sins, He can still save you.
The man at Bethesda (John 5)
Jesus' miracle- healing the lame man of 38 years
The man had been at the pool for 38 years hoping for a cure to his disease which makes him an invalid. He had laid on a mat for 38 years.
Jesus took the man and without even as much as a touch, told the man to get up and walk. The man did. He told him to go and wash in a pool in the center of town. This was because the pool was the only source of water inside the walls of Jerusalem and it was a very busy place. All the people in town would recognize him and the man would testify of the miracle and bring others to Him.
Why is this significant?
Jesus shows here that no matter how bad your physical ailment or how long you have had it, He can heal it with as little as a word or a thought.
The miracles are there to show us about God and His Son. their power, their grace, their mercy and their love.
God bless,
Dave

~ Healing accomplishes many things and serves many purposes. The first is to heal the body of sickness. The second is to bless people. It is used as a sign sometimes. It is part of GOD's love for us.
~ It is a wonderful thing that GOD loves us enough that HE sent HIS SON to die for us. In doing so we were redeemed from the curse of the law of sin and death. Part of the the work that Jesus did on the Cross was involved in healing.
ISAIAH 53: 4-6 [4] Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. [5] But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

~ There is NO scriptural basis for the view that GOD stopped using gifts in 70 AD. It is speculation by fallen man who reject the entirety of GOD's WORD.
~ This teaching is a false teaching in direct violation of the Word of GOD! We can start by looking at the afore mentioned passage in Isaiah where we find that one of the works of the Cross was to provide for physical healing.
~ We can next look at the words of Jesus before HE ascended into heaven.
Mark 16:14-18
[14]Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. [15] And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. [16] He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. [17] And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; [18] They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
~ It is very clear in saying that "they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Since is it a statement made by Jesus who does not lie, we must conclude that HE wants people to keep being healed, and moreover that we have the ability (through HIM) to see others healed.
~ A large part of the ministry of Jesus on earth was healing. Paul told us to imitate Christ: Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. 1 Cor. 11:1.
~ We are also told to follow the examples of the saints.
~ Then we have the issue of GOD being changeless.
Malachi 3:6 For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
Isaiah 40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
~ In these three verses, from three different authors, and at three different times in history we are told that GOD does not change. His ways stay the same. His actions and activities stay. GOD healed in the Old Testament, GOD healed in the New Testament, GOD heals today!
~ There is an apostasy that exists. We are told about it in II Timothy 3:5 when it talks about those: "Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away."
~ I pray you prayerfully consider what the WORD of GOD has to say on the issue of healing and not what fallen men say.
~ Continue to discuss amongst yourselves...

God absolutely works miracles today. There is no Scriptural basis for the idea that they have stopped.
For instance, I have a nephew who blew out his knee with 2 torn ligaments that the MRI showed were clearly torn. He went in for surgery 2 weeks later and the doc wanted to see what he had to do now that the sweling had gone down a bit, but the ligaments were completely healed. (Ligaments have no blood flow, just as cartilage, and does not have regenerative properties.) There is no other explanation than to say that it is a miracle. (This happened in 2002.)
