Pilgrimage to Mt. Athos

Again I will have to apologise if this has been posted before - if so I'd be happy to be directed to the thread.

I am interested in a pilgrimage to Mount Athos for next year. I live in Greece so I am not asking for travel information but for experiences people have had. I feel it is almost compulsory like a Hadj for Orthodox Christians.

While it is quite primitive, I really enjoyed staying at St. Andrew Skete. It is just outside Karyes so it is ideal as a base camp. I greatly enjoyed helping in some small way with their restoration efforts.

Oh yes I am sorry Marjorie I know! :( It is part of the Avaton. The EU and the PC politicians wanted to change that but they didn't succeed I think.

Glory to God that they didn't succeed!!!! I am a women and thank God that the Holy Mountain still follows the command of the Mother of God!

Marjorie, if it is any consolation, there are a number of very nice monasteries throughout the Thessaloniki area so if you were to ever journey there with a male on a pilgrimage there are still wells to drink from. I know it is not Athos, but I have fond memories of the local monasteries that I visited.

Sorry, Marjorie, I didn't mean to sound as if you wanted Mt. Athos to be opened. I was just horrified at the thought of it. Sorry!

Marjorie, there are women's monsteries all over the place in this country. Road Trip!! :D
