I remember driving to Montreal from Toronto on another April 23, 1998, just over a year after I moved from Montreal. We left town mid morning, Toronto was sunny and beautiful. Halfway there we passed through Kingston, which is known to be a pretty wet place, and it was drizzling. Driving on, drizzle became wet snow in Cornwall, the last large town before the Quebec border. Entering Quebec, the snow was coming down like you wouldn't believe. Trucks and cars slipped off to the side of the road, and by the time we got into Montreal, the traffic was dead stopped at 3:00 pm.
What kills me is that my friend Dov, who is a meteorologist, drove from Toronto to Montreal the day before in beautiful sunshine the entire way. Although he knew that we were driving in one day after him, he only forecasted the weather for his trip. Had we known all that snow was coming, we would have left a few hours earlier.
Oh well...

Fun Things to Do During A Boring Sermon
• Pass a note to the organist asking whether he or she plays requests.
• See if a yawn really is contagious.
• Slap your neighbor. See if they turn the other cheek. If not, raise your hand and tell the preacher.
• Devise ways of climbing into the balcony without using the stairs.
• Listen for your preacher to use a word beginning with 'A' then 'B and so on through the alphabet.
• Sit in the back row and roll a handful of marbles under the pews ahead of you. After the service, credit yourself with 10 points for every marble that made it to the front.
• Using church bulletins or visitor cards for raw materials, design, test and modify a collection of paper airplanes.
• Start from the back of the church and try to crawl all the way to the front, under the pews, without being noticed.
• Raise your hand and ask for permission to go to the rest room.
• Whip out a hankie and blow your nose. Vary the pressure exerted on your nostrils and trumpet out a rendition of your favorite hymn.
• Chew gum; if the sermon goes on for more than 15 minutes, start blowing bubbles.
• Try to indicate to the minister that his fly is undone.
• By unobtrusively drawing your arms up into your sleeves, turn your shirt around backwards.
• While people are locating the announced congregational song, step out in the aisle and begin
waving your arms as if directing the hymn.
• Sit close to the front, and during the prayer, turn around backwards, point, and count softly how many people do not have their heads bowed and eyes closed.
• See how many hard candies you can stuff in your cheeks before your mother catches you.
• Begin coughing and get louder and louder until you get to excuse yourself and leave the room.
• Choose a different song than was announced and begin singing it as loud as you can.

Well, I have a football game today. I wonder how close to a full team we'll get this week. We started last week's game with only 7 player (just enough to not forfeit), and by the time all our team had shown up, someone had been carried off injured. So for the entire game we were at least one player shy of a full team. It looks like we'll be at least one player short today as well, unless our coach has found some more players.

Interesting developments with the Army in Grimsby. Talking to the Captain at Youth club on friday, and apparently the Army would like the two Corps in Grimsby to merge.
We have been asked to give our thoughts and opinions on this. I just don't know what to think.
Short term it would be good for us as Grimsby Willows has a good percentage of young people, something we do lack.
But longer term it seems like a backwards step as it will half our effectiveness (the two corps are at opposite ends of the town and whichever corps closed would leave that side of town with no Army presence).
I suppose that ultimate question should really be how long can either or both corps realistically survive if we don't merge.
What do you guys think?

Hmmm...
I might have to ask some friends of mine. They had their corps (Albion) merge with another (Mitchelton), and from what I've seen it's worked out very well for both churches. That's the 'official' line anyway, and my experience at the SNACs I've attended there...
I think it all depends on the 'culture' in both corps - if they aren't that removed from one another, I don't think there would be that many problems.
Maybe you could have a coffee shop up the end of town that loses their Army presence - just a thought? Something that still makes the Army visual, in a tangible way...

I honestly don't know. I wouldn't think so, in the normal flow of events. Presumably the Flood would be considered a miraculous exception? Or perhaps, the current state is the miracle, and the Flood the Chaos which ensues when God removes his hand from the Earth?
Hmmm... back to the topic, the amount of water vapour available, air currents, electron build-ups, etc. Hmmm... how on earth would you get an answer to that one out of a search engine? I'm stumped. Is there a meteorologist in the house?

Talking of the flood, there's something that has been bothering me about that.
God told Noah to build the ark from wood, OK. He then told him to take two of every kind of creature into this wooden ark.
What about termites ?
Either good ol' Noah excercised a little discretion in how he interpreted God's command, or Genisis has whitewashed one of the worlds more spectacular maritime disasters....;)
Think about it.:)

Of course, there are a lot of different theories... one of which being that early Genesis is a 're-write' of the creation myths of the day to display the differences between Yahweh and the gods of the tribes around Israel... *shrug*
As with much of Genesis, it goes into my 'I believe God COULD have done it this way, but maybe he didn't' basket :P

Appearance: Larger than subterranean termites, up to one-half inch long; no worker caste in the colony.
Habits: Create colonies in wood, with no connection to the ground necessary; often found in attic wood; need very little moisture.
Diet: Wood and occasionally other cellulose material.
Reproduction: Nymphs pass through seven instars before reaching adulthood; sexual forms eventually swarm to form new colony.
Other Information: Cause serious damage to structures, often long before they are discovered; piles of sawdust-like pellets are a distinct sign of infestation; not as widespread as subterranean termite; colonies may contain up to 2,700 members.

Andy Broadley
15th May 2005, 12:03 PM
Pentecost!!
This could, and probably would, be argued at graet length, but IMHO no denomination can celebrate Pentecost as well as the Army. Joint meeting this weekend of the the two Grimsby corps, so better than normal crowd for a start.
The Pentecostal church might lay claim to such great songwriters as Kendrick and Co., but we got Generals Gowans and Larson.
'For the mighty moving of Thy Spirit, In our hearts and minds from day to day.
For the gentle moving of Thy Spirit, when our fears had filled us with dismay.'
For the kindly chiding........For the gracious guiding........
For the tender stirring.......The persistant spurring of Thy Spirit....
Oh wow!!!:)
Then you go right back to the Army's beginning and finish with one of general Booths own songs..
Thou Christ of burning, cleansing flame,
Send the fire!
Thy blood bought gift today we claim,
Send the fire!
Look down and see the waiting host,
Give us the promised Holy Ghost,
We want another Pentecost.
Send the fire.
And to cap it all we used the old tune of Tucker.
Add to that little lot the fact that we opened with
'Breathe on me, breath of God'..........
And you have one of those meetings that will stick in your memory for years.
Like I said, the Army does do a good Pentecost:)
Coming to the end of the meeting I remembered something I once heard John Smith say. He was talking about Grace, but it seemed to fit the situation today.
"Real Grace will be when you can't sing, you can only cry, and if you can't play a guitar...it won't matter."

I wasn't joking about the T shirt idea though. They dont weigh a lot so that should keep postage costs down (the most practical way would be for them to be printed up in Aussie as there are more CC members there than elsewhere in the world)
Well, I'd buy one at least. It's worth thinking about....

And Elm0 could look into production and printing costs, as well as shipping prices.
If we got definate orders and paid up front then a predefined number could be printed and there would be financial risk to anyone.

It would take 'em 20 years to argue about which territory we come under..:D
Canada ? Aussie ? UK ?
And stats..which currency? Can$ Aussie$ GBP£ (and by the time they sort that out we'll have the Euro anyway)
Anyway, you are a proper officer, and any further attempts to claim otherwise will lead to you being soundly prayed for.
Having dealt with that, any progress on the T shirt idea.
BTW- hope you feel better now skipper

Sorry Andy, this isn't the only "Cyber Corps". As for 'inter corps fellowship' I think these are the ultimate in that area. We've got people from corps around the world fellowshipping here.

This Cyber corps might have members from different corps around the world, but we are united as one in Cyber space.
But if you want to call it an inter corps fellowship, fine. I for one could do with the sleep..;)

You know those last few days at work before you go on holiday......
Why do they last so long?
elm0
24th May 2005, 07:57 AM
They don't last long, they just seem to last long. It's the theory of relativity at work. The closer to a vacation you get the more stretched out time becomes.

No, I'm pretty sure that exstensive scientific research, with a suitably large budget, will prove that time moves at different speeds, in direst relation to vacations.
For example it will move at half the normal rate in the week preceeding a holiday, yet pass atbthree times the rate DURING the vacation.
I would be happy to carry out this research if anyopne would care to privide a suitable amount of funding (say £5m a year for 5 years):D

My wife wants to go up on Dartmoor to see the Ponies. We'll hopefully get a bit of time on the beach for the kids, maybe do a little walking, and whatever else is around.
Unfortunately things like zoo admissions get quite expensive when you are paying for 6 people, but we generally manage to find plenty to do on our holidays. Can't spend too much on this one though 'cos we're saving up for Disneyland (Paris) at the end of July.

Sunday is a funny day, it starts with lots of noise,
Mummy running round with socks and Daddy say's 'You boys'
And Mummy say's 'Now don't blame them, you know you're just as bad'
'You've only just got out of bed, you really make me mad'
But when at last we get to church, it's really very strange,
'Cos Mum and Dad stop arguing, and suddenly they change.
At church my Mum and dad are friends, they get on very well.
And no-one knows they've had a row, and I'm not going to tell.
People often come to them because they seem sooo nice,
And Mum and Dad are very pleased to offer them advice.
My Mummy is a Christian, my Daddy is as well.
My Mummy say's 'Oh Heavens!', my Daddy say's....'oh well'
My Daddy loves the meetings, he's always at the hall.
He's learning how to understand the letters of St Paul.
But Mummy say's 'I'm stuck at home to live my Christian life'
'It's just as well for blinking Paul, he didn't have a wife'
I once heard daddy say to her he'd picked a rotten wife.
I once heard mummy say to him she'd walk out of his life.
I think they love each other, I really think they do.
I think the people in the church would help them...if they knew.

Ok, I'm really upset, and I can't hold it in any longer.
As is in every Salvation Army corps (well, to be fair, in every church too) there are people who are upset with others. Not knowing which thread to put my two cents worth in, I'll do here in the Blood & Fire Drop In.
Abiel and InTheFlame: Why aren't you feeding your CF cats? If you need help (i.e. blessings), I'll send you some. Both Lou and Purracio are looking very sick, and it doesn't really take much time or effort to feed them.
If you don't want them anymore, then I'll send you some blessings, you can feed them back to full health and put them up for adoption. But pleeeeease don't just let them die... ketzel would never forgive me if I let that happen without trying to help.
Blessings...
