View Full Version : Come, let us obey HaShem together...Count the Omer!

As noted in the article whose link is posted in the HaBikkurim thread, there is a tradition today in Judaism of starting the Omer count on the evening after Passover. This method, however, runs into difficulty every few years because one cannot ensure they will be counting 50 days that includes 7 Shabbats UNLESS one begins counting on a Sunday. Therefore here is presented the Omer count as commanded by scripture.
Vayikra 23: 9 ADONAI said to Moshe, 10 "Tell the people of Isra'el, 'After you enter the land I am giving you and harvest its ripe crops, you are to bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the cohen. 11 He is to wave the sheaf before ADONAI, so that you will be accepted; the cohen is to wave it on the day after the Shabbat. 12 On the day that you wave the sheaf, you are to offer a male lamb without defect, in its first year, as a burnt offering for ADONAI. 13 Its grain offering is to be one gallon of fine flour mixed with olive oil, an offering made by fire to ADONAI as a fragrant aroma; its drink offering is to be of wine, one quart. 14 You are not to eat bread, dried grain or fresh grain until the day you bring the offering for your G-d; this is a permanent regulation through all your generations, no matter where you live. 15 "'From the day after the day of rest -that is, from the day you bring the sheaf for waving -you are to count seven full sabbaths, 16 until the day after the seventh week; you are to count fifty days; and then you are to present a new grain offering to ADONAI.
At sunset on April 10th, this year, the counting of the Omer begins. We are commanded to count 50 days, 7 Sabbaths.
The blessing should be said after the appearance of the third star each evening. On the east coast of the US at this time of year it is about 9:40pm.
The omer is usually counted in the evening, and the following blessing is said:
Baruch atah adonai, eloheinu melech haolam, asher kidshanu bimitzvotav, vitzivanu, al sefirat ha omer.
Blessed are you, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe whose commandments add holiness to our lives and who gives us the commandment of counting the Omer.
Next, the day itself is counted ,"Today is the x day, which is y weeks and z days of the Omer."

That's so very helpful Henny, Thank you! This is the first year we have looked into the feast of First Fruits (this is... HaBikkurim, right?) and I just really haven't gotten the big picture yet, I can say. But I'm interested and needing to learn, so I appreciate you posting this info.

Thank you for this Henaynei. Tonight would be the third night, right?
Also should candles be lite at sundown tonight? I am a little hazy on this.
Ok....
The last *@* days of Passover are Shabbats - therefore one can not light a candle tonight because you have a Shabbat both ending and beginning.
When you have 2 Shabbats back to back you light the Shabbat candles the erev of the first Shabbat and light the Havdalah candles at the end of the *2nd* shabbat.
So, if you have not lit a candle last evening - you are restrained from lighting any but the Havdalah candle tomorrow evening after the first 3 stars are seen (or about 72 min after sunset).
Here is an excellent and easy to use online Hebrew calendar program (http://www.hebcal.com/hebcal/)that will give you the candle lighting days and times for your area for all the feasts and festivals ;)
As for the Omer - tonight after sunset will be the beginning of the 3rd day, yes, you got it!!
Info:
The Omer is not a festival, but rather a period of counting 50 days that is commanded of HaShem, from the day after the Shabbat in Passover (Sunday) and Shavuot/Pentecost. G-d commanded that we count the days between, and so we do ;)

No, I did not get my candles lit on sunday night, I was sick in bed, I actually had to leav synagogue on Sat morn because of this, some kind of intestinal bug, I am not able to keep much down and becoming seriously dehydrated, if not for gatorade and a few grapes. So I can't light until tomorrow? Reason I asked ( and I have that site on my favorites for calendars for a few yrs now, but I usually always use chabad which doesn't have the holidays) was that a calendar I purchased ( My Jewish Calendar ;) ) has the candles for tonight, pictured. It's by karben.com publishing, so they are wrong?Yes, they are wrong. The only candles you can light at this point will be the ones that end the Shabbat, the Havdalah candle tomorow night.
Here is the logic of the thing:
Scripture says very clearly that we are not permitted to kindle a flame on Shabbat. So... We light the Shabbat candles a minimum of 18min BEFORE Shabbat starts. When it is time to recognize the conclusion of Shabbat we wait for 72 min after Shabbat (until 3 stars are visible) to ensure that no matter what the weather we will avoid lighting a flame on Shabbat. The lighting of the Havdalah candle signifies that it is now *past* Shabbat and it is permitted to kindle a flame.
Therefore:
If 2 Shabbats run back to back you have a 48 hour period that is Shabbat and during which it is forbidden to light a flame. So, we can light before the Shabbats start, that is before the beginning of the first Shabbat, and we can light the Havdalah to signify the end of the last Shabbat.
Equivacation:
There is a tradition of rabbinic thought that states that the last Shabbats of some festivals are not equivalent to the weekly Shabbat in restrictions and this tradition does allow certain things such as lighting the candle. However, this is not the majority decision.
I hope you are feeling better very soon!!! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_2_128.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001)

The Counting of the Omer – Journey to Mount Sinai
After crossing the Red Sea, the children of Israel traveled forty-seven days until they reached the mountain of G-d, Mount Sinai. They then spent three days of separation, preparing themselves to go before G-d and receive the Torah. This date would establish the date of the fourth feast for the Israelites(Lev.23:16-22). The forty-seven days of traveling and then three days of preparation before going before G-d exactly parallels the fifty days between the Resurrection of Messiah Yeshua and the giving of the Ruach haKodesh on the Feast of Pentecost. When the Torah (Law) was given on Mount Sinai, three thousand people lost their lives through their disobedience and idolatry. When the Holy Spirit came on the Feast of Pentecost and Kefa (Peter) preached the message of salvation through Yeshua, three thousand people accepted Yeshua as their Messiah and Savior and were saved.
I found this regarding Omer ...sorry that I can not seem to get the link to work or find it again after I came back to the forum with it. I was inspired by the thoughts it brought forward and wanted to share.
Question: Did Yeshua spend three days talking to His disciples before returning to His father? as in the three days of separation from the wave sheaf of first fruits before His father to the return to heaven to start the High Priest ministry.????

LOL - on your fingers? nu??
There are two traditions for the count - one tradition is that the count starts after the first day of passover, the other is that the count starts on the first day after the first seventh day Shabbat (therfore always a Sunday) in Passover - this year there is a 4 day difference.
AND then there is the fact that the Jewish day starts at sunset - *most* Jewish calendars are set that the Jewish holiday or event listed on the calendar actually started the evening BEFORE - but you will run into the occasional one (usually designed to be used by observant Jews, where the holiday or event is listed on the day whose evening begins that holiday or event.
So, you *could* conceivably get 4 different "versions" for the omer count if you looked in enough places. This is why, when I post the count I state "after sunset on."
hope that helps *some*

Sorry Henaynei, I am just seeing this. Yes I was asking for the reason why it has to end on a Sunday or first day ( the fiftith day). I don't see how this is lunarly ) is that a word? ) possible.
That's ok- it *isn't lunar*!!!
What it IS is 7 7's - that is 7 full (7day) weeks, and the day after the 49th day is complete - 50. Seven weeks - 7x7=49 - the day following is Shavuot (which means "weeks"). This is one of the reasons G-d commanded us to *count* and this is the ONLY holy day that He did command that we count. IF it always fell on the day after the full moon there would be no reason to count ;)
It is the same with the Jubilee year - 7 "weeks" of years - 7x7=49 - the following year is Jubilee, the 50th year.
Seven is a special number in the scripture - G-d uses the number 7 alot and it is associated with Himself - 7 days of the week He created, 7 branches on the Menorah, 7 weeks to Shavuot, 7 weeks of years to Jubilee.

From the calendar here: http://www.uscj.org/metny/huntinhh/omer.html (http://www.uscj.org/metny/huntinhh/omer.html)
You are counting according to the rabbinic tradition - which is at variance with scripture..... I followed that tradition myself for many years. First I was just learning and followed the sources that abound, all from the rrabbinic teachings; second, even after I discovered the scriptures on this, the rabbi and community where I fellowshipped doggedly kept to the rabbinic tradition, even conceeding that I was right - but they clung to the post Akiva dictum that states that if the community has been doing a practice for a long time that it carries the weight of Torah. I disagree in those few cases where rabbinic tradition is at variance to Torah ;) Now, that we are no longer fellowshipping in that community we follow scripture in this matter :)
Scripture states that we are to count 50 days; "7 Shabbats and the day" after the last Shabbat is Shavuot... The count is to begin on the day after the Shabbat of Passover. The Rabbinic tradition claims that is the day after the first day of Passover, which is indeed *a* Shabbat. The scriptural tradition starts the count from the day after the first 7th day Shabbat during Passover, thus always starting and ending on a Sunday, the day after the 7th Shabbat.
Yeshua, by choosing the year He did for his sacrifice, placed His vote with the scriptural counting method - for He was the First Fruit of the Harvest of Resurrection and He rose on the first Sunday of Passover, the Festival of First Fruits/HaBikkurim according to the scriptural instructions. He was the wave offering.
There was always this disagreement between the Sadukim and the P'rushim - with the Sadukim holding the scriptural view (and while the Temple stood they also held the power to ensure the nation counted that way) and the P'rushim held the other view (which they were happy to enforce when the power shifted to them after the destruction of the Temple and the Dispersion).
Thus this year, as the first Sunday fell 5 days after Passover, the rabbinic count is 4 days ahead of the scriptural count.

You are counting according to the rabbinic tradition - which is at variance with scripture.....
What is at issue is how to interpret tBVhHaShabbat in Lev 23. Rabbinic tradition understands this as "a rest day".
Lev 23:16 To the next day after the seventh sabbath (HaShabbat) shall you count fifty days; and you shall offer a new meal offering to the Lord.
The construction of “HaShabbat” (with the definite article) is used 17 times in Torah.
Ex 16:29 20:8 20:11 31:14 31:15 31:16 35:3
Lev 23:11 23:15 23:16 24:8
Num 15:32 28:9
Deut 5:12 5:15
In every case it is so clear that the weekly Shabbat is being referred to. So why would HaShabbat in Lev 23 be in question?
He was the wave offering.
So they were waving the Omer. I think you might find this interesting....
Each Hebrew letter has a meaning (and a number). Omer is spelled r m [
[ means eye or fountain
m means water
r means head or first
So you could string them together "the fountain of water is first". Yeshua said "I am living water" and he is the "first fruits" from the dead.
