Hi everybody!
What are your thoughts or what does your pastor preach about drums?
I ask, because my preacher has mentioned to me in our discussions that drums are from tribal origins and are pagan in nature. Thus, they are not beneficial in music.
My personal thought is based on the idea that God created all music and that all music can benefit Him. It is the intent and the lyrics that matter.
What are your thoughts?
God bless,
Dave

Has your pastor read Psalm 150 lately?
"Praise the LORD!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD!"
Timbrel and cymbal are both percussion instruments. There is no mention of "drums" in the Bible, but I agree that the motive behind the music is what is important. "Whether you eat or drink [or play the drums or brush your teeth or drive your car or ...] or whatever you do; do all to the glory of God."

Daniel 3:5
"That at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the gold image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up."
I guess we'll have to give up using trumpets, flutes, harps and some other instruments since they were clearly used by pagans for idol worship. :P

Actually, he references that as evidence for his stance. It does not refer to drums, per se, and mentions different types of percussion instruments.
I agree with you, though. :)
This is only one of two small issues that I have found so far that I disgree with my pastor on. He is a great exegete and does a great job living and passing on the Word. :clap:
God bless,
Dave

The "drums are evil doctrine" makes no logical sense to me. They use drums in symphonies, so should we stop listening to the orchestra? How about concert bands, and marching band? DRUMS, big time! Is the only musical instrument that was ever used to conjur up spirits a drum? No. Can a flute be used for evil just as well as a drum can? Yes. They say that a timbrel is not the same as a drum. Well, what is a timbrel then? Hmmm, something you bang on that keeps rhythm and make a really cool sound. Sounds like a drum to me.

Here are a number of times the 'Toph' appears in the Bible:
"Begin the music, strike the tambourine (drum)..." Psalm 81:2.
"Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine (drum) and harp." Psalm 149:3.
"Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister took a tambourine (drum) in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing." Exodus 15:20
"In front are the singers, after them the musicians; with them are the maidens playing tambourines (drums)." Psalm 68:25
"Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise Him with the harp and lyre, praise Him with the tambourine (drum) and dancing, praise Him with the strings and flute, praise Him with the clash of cymbals, praise Him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD." Psalm 150:3-6.
"Begin the music, strike the tambourine (drum)..." Psalm 81:2.
"Every stroke the LORD lays on them with his punishing rod will be to the music of the tambourines (drums) and harps, as he fights the battle with the blow of his arm." Isaiah 30:32
"Let them praise His name with dancing and make music to Him with tambourine (drum) and harp." Psalm 149:3.
"When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with tambourines (drums) and lutes." 1 Samuel 18:6
"After that you will go to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine outpost. As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, tambourines (drums), flutes and harps being played before them, and they will be prophesying." 1Samuel 10:5,6

I don't see anything wrong with the use of drums simply because they may be Pagan in origin. In my opinion, all things can be used for the good of God! :clap:

Don't we have theological problems if things are "pagan in origin"? I thought the Creed said "... through Him all things were made". So where are these other things coming from?

My church has drums as well, I don't see a problem as long as it's glorifying God.

It is good to see the responses. I thought more thought the same as my pastor. I have heard from several others that this was what they were taught as well.
