i think it should be more clear when moderators edit posts. for example, at my site, i am using brackets.
i think that whenever the mods edit a post, any of their own words should be within brackets. otherwise it can look like the original poster said something that they did not.
example to put in place of original user's text:
[edit by (name of mod): whatever the mod has to say]
example:
[edit by Erwin: see rule #6]
then all mods can follow this standard, and there will be no confusion.

Hello Josh ~ whenever a post is edited, the mod's name is automatically printed in italics. And there is an option to add the reason for editing a post by that particular mod.
This is it below:

yes i know, the problem is just knowing what was edited. like if a moderator replaces text, it looks exactly like the original user is the one who typed it. it would be much clearer if a standard were used, such as brackets.

Well, generally, that would be the point. At least in my opinion. You don't really want to interrupt the flow of a message...and have someone reading it trying to figure out why a particular word/phrase/etc. was edited.
If it's something that you've posted, and you see that your post has been edited and no reason is given, you can see who the editor was and can PM them, asking them what was edited and why. :)

Well the thing is you DO want to interrupt the flow of a message in order to say who is saying what. I think that it is ridiculous to make it look like somebody said something that they did not.
Usually you can tell from what is said whether or not it was a mod or the poster, but we shouldn't have to rely on this, should we? Shouldn't it be made clear who's saying what?

Posts will be edited by moderators if the need arises, and proper notice will be give in a way that the moderator feels is appropriate. In some instances, it is necessary to point out exactly where the edit occurs - in other cases it may be deemed unneccessary. If you or any member feels an edit was improper or that it should have been better clarified do PM the mod or myself to sort it out.

If you ever look at MLA guidelines for citations, you'll see that interrupting the flow of the message is the last thing on their minds. They want to make it perfectly clear who said what and where regardless of the ugly brackets or slight interruption in text.
I guess the point is well...you want to know if something you wrote has been changed. You want your reader to know the changes. Words are precious.
