Is being Baptist part of your personal identity?

SumTinWong
11th November 2004, 06:39 PM
Nope, but being a Christian is.

If you're baptised in the Holy Spirit, I'd question if it could not be part of your personal identity.

SumTinWong

You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means ;)

Carrye
11th November 2004, 06:47 PM
Which word?

InigoMontoya
11th November 2004, 06:53 PM
Bud,

Are you referring to Baptised or Personal? I suppose both may be poor theological words to use in this case, but the general idea remains the same. Does it not?

In case there's some confusion about my question, I was wondering whether being a Baptist (not baptized) in some way defines who you are (your personal [individual] identity).

I think being baptist is part of my idenitity, alhough not all I am, but it influences how I percieve scripture and worshiping God.

Your screen name InigoMontoya. From the movie The Princess Bride. Famous line from the movie:"You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means" Perhaps I should have said, "Hello my name is Indigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!" It happens to be my all time favorite movie.

Anyway her question was about being a baptist, not about being baptised as part of our identity. I said no Being a Christian is part of my identity, not being a baptist. I can stop attending a baptist church at anytime. I cannot stop my relationship with God.

LOL, hun sorry. Meant to ask Bud which of those two words, or both, he had a problem with. I'm just "guessing" its one of those two.

I'm still going to say that yes, or atleast should, that ones Biblical interpretations/theology (like being a Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, etc.) should be interwoven in our personal identity. However we must keep Christ first as Christians, but our understanding of him is often partly guided by our theology.

Okay, maybe I'm just being confused

Too many things going on in here for me to keep straight! LOL. :)

Nope, you're not confused at all. That's the kind of response I was wondering about.

:amen:

That's exactly what I would say to such a question. I'm the pastor of a baptist church, but if God led me from here to another church that was not baptist I would go. Who am I to question God's will for my life?

-------------------------
James 4:7-10
"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up."

Rural. It doesn't give it justice does it . Drop your. Sword. It is just classic the way he says it. If anyone wants here is the script http://www.godamongdirectors.com/scripts/princess.shtml so you can hunt out your favorite lines. Whoever did was pretty good.

By the way has anyone ever read the book? It is far better than the movie believe it or not :)

A Book?

That's right. When I was your age, television was called books. And this is a special book. It was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick, and I used to read it to your father. And today, I'm gonna read it to you.

I just told my wife we need to go out and get the DVD. Our VHS is wearing thin. If you see it, get the book on tape. It is read by Rob Reiner and it is hilarious!

Don't bother me with trifles; after twenty years, at last, my father's soul will be at peace.

Not so much being Baptist, but for me SB doctrine defines how I put my faith into action. For example; we believe we are all priest, all have a calling to use our testimony to bring others to Christ. So in a manner, it defines who I am.
