View Full Version : I love being Anglican because. . .

Anyone else think we could use a little more positive fellowship around here, these days?

What do you love about the Anglican Communion? Why do you love being Anglican?

I love being Anglican because...the Book of Common Prayer makes possible a degree of uniformity in prayer while leaving room for diversity of cultures, languages and liturgical styles.

I love being part of a Tradition of scholarship; a Tradition where empirical observations and spiritual truths can be held in tension, as long as necessary until Truth resolves the conflicts, without either one being discounted or condemned. I love great ancient Christian universities where textual criticism and astronomy and anthropology have flourished without leading to secularism.

...Choral Complines, with extra incense!

...the 3-legged stool (Scripture, Tradition, Reason, wheee!) provides stability in unstable, rocky times.

...the concept of Anglicanism being a way of thinking theologically, rather than a cut-and-dry theology.

I'd have to go with the three legged stool aswell....not so comman in other denominations as you might think!

I basically consider myself above all Christian. No church is perfect, but it is a joy to fellowship and serve my local Anglican church. Because:

The theology taught is very much ‘New Wine’ which is sound, it has a lot to do with SoulSurvivor which is radical, there are many cultures and nationalities in the membership. It has a growing mission and social action outreach.

I was baptised and confirmed and married in the CofE and have been taught by many excellent Anglican preachers teachers and pastors and I have already noted the wonderful work of Anglican missionaries in the past so have a lot to praise and thank God for in the Anglican communion.

In the Anglican Communion, unity in the Church is a priority - unlike my first church whose softball team wouldn't play against a Methodist team because of doctrinal error (theirs or ours is what I still wonder  ).

Hi WigglesworthThanks, I forgot that. My local Anglican church has very very strong links with Baptist, Elim, Methodist and denominational churches as well as many other Anglican churches. In our local mission and social action we probably work closest with the RC churches.

Because it's a church centered around understanding God, people, and all those things in between. Because the balance of scripture, tradition, and reason makes for a most engaging and dynamic spiritual, cultural, and intellectual experience. Because I have yet to come across an Anglican Church where all are not welcome at the table.

"scripture, tradition, reason"...yep, that just about says it all.

obviously I can't speak for every Anglican church in the entire world, only the ones that I've experienced. But I love the fact that our congregation is comfortable with ancient traditions as well as with the modern world. Teh people in the Anglican church i sang for last year were so rational and not out of touch with the world we live in, but yet still fully in Christ. I think what I like about the anglican church can be summed up in one word: equilibrium. it's not so liberal as to be out of touch with Scripture, yet not so conservative as to be out of touch with the reality of life.

And perhaps this is shallow, but I adore the music used in the anglican church. Classical music just moves me like nothing else can, and when used in connection with church--wow. It's almost as if God is speaking to me in the language of music. My introduction to the anglican church was when a director of a show I was in said that his church choir needed sopranos...and quite honestly I went there for the purpose of singing some gorgeous Handel music, but I got a lot more, in terms of connection with God. :)

I love being Anglican because...
of Sarum Plainsong and English Chant. Whenever I've introduced outsiders to these musical forms, they've come away amazed that a whole domain of music exists, sung by ordinary people from children to grandmothers, of which the secular world is entirely unaware. Gregorian chant is trendy; Russian chant is fashionably effete; but the lilting strains of English chant are our cultural secret that is not quite "in" the world, and far, far from being "of" the world.

The 39 Articles of Religion are no longer in play. You will find it rather hard to find a Calvinistic Anglican.

Hi,

what do you mean by English Chant (don't know this term). Is it four part Anglican Chant? If that's what you mean, I totally agree

I'm sure I said it already, but it's worth saying again:
Incense! :liturgy:

Also, the Daily Office, Morning & Evening Prayer. I find it incredibly comforting and moving to know, that at any given hour, around the globe, Anglicans are praying Morning and Evening Prayer.
