Just wondering as I re-read "Excellent Women" the other day when I was in bed with a bad cold.

Most of her books were published in the 1950s. They are very funny social comedies. Imagine Jane Austen writing in the 1950s with no obligation to end the book with a marriage. She was a High Church Anglican herself, but that didn't stop her poking gentle fun at the clergy, and women who were heavily involved in church life. Nobody who's read much Barbara Pym can hear the word "curate" without smiling.
