:) You were born in Istanbul, and you are thinking about becoming a monk. Doesn't the EP have to be a native-born Turk? hmmmmm;)

A good place to get some background information if you have the time is a book that came out back in the 90's called "From the Holy Mountain" written by William Dalrymple. The author retraced the journey of a sixth century monk to see what was left of Christianity in the lands in which it was born and grew. The picture is grim and one of the stories he relates is the precarious and often hostile environment in which the current Ecumenical Patriarch sits.

Bulldog,
Good to see you at TAW, which seems to be a regular occurence lately  You ask some good questions.!
The others have already gien the correct answers. The EP is notheld in the same sort of light as the RCC holds the Pope in. The current EP is Bartholemos and you can see a short bio on him,
here (http://home.it.net.au/~jgrapsas/pages/Biography.htm)
His unworthy servant,
Eusebios.
