Could anyone please advise me of the differences between the two?
Also are there any evangelical lutheran churches in South Australia?

I don't know if there is a difference between "Lutheran" and "Evangelical Lutheran". Lutheran congregations and synods that include "evangelical" in their name do it to try to emphasize the fact that they believe in Salvation by Grace through Faith apart from works.

Oops I forgot you asked about church locations...

www.lcms.org (http://www.lcms.org)
www.wels.net (http://www.wels.net)
www.elca.org (http://www.elca.org)

...should all have church locators on their sites.

:D

LOL Lotar. The WELS one has internationsal churches on there, I didn't think to look if the others had them. :o Doh!

We have missionaries, so they might be listed elsewhere.
I should check out the ELCA website.

There are a handful of differences between the ELCA and the LCMS and WELS.

Really--it was a ploy all along to get another member into his synod. ;) Give the poster three options, two sites for US only and then one site that actually does cover her country and the poster will be forced to consider WELS!!! Recht...I always knew you were a bright guy...but Lotar is bright too and caught your scam. :P :D :D

Actually--this can be confusing. At least here in the US we have the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. But I belonged to a church in Iowa that was Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and it was called St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran church!!! I do not know if the descriptor Evangelical in Australia is linked to any synod description or is merely an adjective some churches add to the local congregation.

There are differences between synods...some differences are more significant than others depending upon your point of view. All teach salvation by grace through faith and I can guarantee that when we are called to glory we will find folks from all of the synods represented in heaven. :D

(Hey, isn't one of our own, Breetai, considering seminary in South Australia? Well then we surely know there are good Lutheran congregations there! )

Peace

(Hey, isn't one of our own, Breetai, considering seminary in South Australia? Well then we surely know there are good Lutheran congregations there!) Yup! In Alelaide, with the Lutheran-Church of Australia (LCA).

I'm in Canada. (hello Oz, oye!) I go to the Lutheran-Church Canada(LCC; http://www.lutheranchurch-canada.ca/) division. It is the exact same as the LCMS in the USA. We are also in full fellowship with the Lutheran-Church of Australia(LCA; http://www.lca.org.au/). There is also the Australian Evangelical Lutheran Church (AELC; http://www.aelc.org.au/).

Even though every Lutheran Church is technically 'evangelical', the churches with 'evangelical' in their name are generally always a little more liberal in their teaching. Other than that, I don't know much about the AELC. I do know that the LCA is somewhere between the LCMS and the ELCA (in the US) in how liberal they are. The Church headquarters for the LCA is in Adelaide. The LCA and the LCC routinely exchange pastors for one year periods, so there is quite a bit of communication between the Lutheran-Church Canada and the Lutheran-Church of Australia.

1. It is just a nominal device as stated by Recht.

2. www.lwf.org (http://www.lwf.org) is a good source to find Lutheran Churches in the world. Check out: http://www.lutheranworld.org/Directory/ASI/LutheranChurchofAustraliaAssociateMemberChurch.EN.html for australia.

(I had to post on this thread, I don't think any Lutheran could resist, and from looking at the posts no one else did [wink])

Unfortunately, not all of the Lutheran Churches are part of http://www.lutheranworld.org/Direct...rChurch.EN.html. It is an incomplete list.
