I just bought a Shofar from Israel, but I am unsure of how to use it. Any help would be appreciated!

Why did you buy one? That is the first most important question, then I can answer what you should do with it. My husband finally after three years picked out one this past summer.

Well, the Old Testament and Jewish practices have to be fully grasped to totally understand the New Testament. This is simply one of the ways in which I am trying to discover more.

So you did not receive instruction from the L-RD to buy one? Just a curiousity? And what kind do you have? Ram's horn or Kudu? Do you know what it was used for in the Bible? Do you know what it is used for today? Have you read this thread here Messianic Judaism 101 (http://www.christianforums.com/t692666) -- see post #3.
Here's something else you might want to read Musical Instruments of the Bible (http://fp.thebeers.f9.co.uk/instruments.htm)

I have received instruction to study out the different types of Christianity. The kind I have is a ram's horn, but no instructions came with it. I think it was used to call worshippers together. Reading the links now

Amen Zayit, I'm still waiting for Yeshua to let me get one. Every year around Yom Teruah I ask and he shows me how I am not ready. But it was he who gave the desire to blow it..and it will be he who allows me to do so. Funny I was just talking about this to ishai last night. I told her, "I know when I am given the responsibility to blow the shofar it will be for real....not just to hear it". And when I hear the shofar....something inside moves.

Shimshon I hear ya, if it is blow in the Spirit it can bring me to tears.
Just a word of first hand advice, when you do get the word to blow it or actually even get one, know that the enemy is well aware of this weapon and all it means. You should pray yourself up well as he will try to discourage and find excuses for not taking time to practice nor pray for revealing when to blow it.

Relax your lips, put them together, against the mouthpiece and blow forward, fiddling around with how hard or soft you press into the mouthpiece. Eventually, your lips will vibrate. Catch that and go with it! :)

The shofar blast is comprised of three distinct blasts;
Tekiah; One long unbroken sound
Shevarim; three medium broken sounds
Teruah; short quick sounds (usually 9)
and tekiah gedolah (literally, "big tekiah"), the final blast in a set, which lasts (I think) 10 seconds minimum

As far as the technique to blow. Each Shofar is a little bit different from another but in general it is very similar to a horn mouthpeice or a digerido. Your lips vibrate as if your giving someone a raspberry. :P :D

Do you have any woodwind intrument training or even singing? You need to blow with your diaphram, not your cheeks or you will blow them out and cause a hemoragh! :eek:
