Good Day, All
Need some help with this verse:
ASV
Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith working through love.
KJV
Gal 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Young's Literal Translation
5:6 for in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith through love working.
The phase though / by love, who’s love is this is it God’s love for us or our love for him?
I see two possible senses in which this verse can be understood.
1.Faith works though our love for God.
2. Faith works though God’s love for us.
Thanks for you help.
Peace to u,

i think what i highlighted is what is relevent here.
so in other words, it is:
but faith working because of love.
does our love bring faith? nope. so it must be God's love.
i see it as kind of a parallel passage to "saved by grace through faith". same idea. seems to me the context of galatians 5 is redemption...

I think when we consider the context of those passages it is more likely that Paul is speaking of our love for God. This section deals with the liberty of Christians. Paul was teaching his Gentile audience not to get caught up in the Judaizers profession that circumcision is required for salvation. He exhorts them to "Stand fast..." and continue to rely on the sufficiency of Christ's death for salvation. Claiming salvation by the grace of God through Jesus' death is antithetical to submitting to circumcision for salvation. Those who do so, like those who believe water baptism is necessary for salvation, actually deny the sufficiency of Christ's death and estrange themselves from Christ. Paul is very clear that if we are circumcised because we believe that, in any way, circumcision (baptism) adds to the sufficiency of Christ's death then we make ourselves debtors to keeping the whole law. Such a requirement is actually, as Paul calls it, a "fall" from grace. Those who no longer rely solely on the grace of God actually renounce it.
The "faith working through love" is representative of one who believes in Jesus Christ and relies on the salvitic sufficiency of His obedience alone, and demonstrates the reality of his belief through a sanctified life.
God bless
