I'm having some brain "issues." Stress does weird things to me. I discovered yesterday that I'd completely forgotten about a project which was DUE YESTERDAY! It wasn't a matter of procrastination, it simply did not register in my mind for whatever reason. Anyway, I have permission to turn it in tomorrow. Here's where you guys come in.... I have a list of 12 questions, to be given to one person from each of these age categories: 20-29 yr. old, 30-45 yr. old, 46-60, 61-75, and 76 and older. I realize we probably don't have anyone over 76, so I haven't figured out what to do for that one yet (I have no living grandparents). This is for a Gerontology class, and I will be comparing answers from different age groups and writing a summary about the diffferences.

If y'all could take just a couple minutes to answer these (you don't have to have a long answer or anything), it would be my salvation where this class is concerned! If you think your answers would be too personal, you can PM them to me.

1. Where do you live and for how long? (I don't need your address or anything, just a general location, live alone or with someone, etc.)

2. What is your current/past job or profession? ("past" means if you are no longer working or retired)

3. What activities/hobbies do you enjoy, or used to enjoy but are not able to do them anymore?

4. What's the status of your health? (do you have to take meds. for a chronic health condition?)

5. What is a typical day like for you? (how active are you?)

6. Family status? (siblings, spouse, children?)

7. Educational history? (you don't have to say where you went to school or anything, just whether or not you went somewhere, have a degree, etc.)

8. What is the greatest change/disappointment in life? Any regrets?

9. What are the most important things in your life?

10. What are your goals?

11. What is your earliest memory?

12. List 5 words that describe young adults today.

THANKS to anyone who is kind enough to participate!

PS: Please list your age!:D

I'm having some brain "issues." Stress does weird things to me. I discovered yesterday that I'd completely forgotten about a project which was DUE YESTERDAY! That's the stuff of anxiety dreams. Poor GDE! You know you're too busy when...

1. Where do you live and for how long? (I don't need your address or anything, just a general location, live alone or with someone, etc.) North Carolina Western Piedmont area, in a house (owned) outside the city limits (semi-rural area).

2. What is your current/past job or profession? ("past" means if you are no longer working or retired) Past professions - teaching, church music. Current - homemaking.
3. What activities/hobbies do you enjoy, or used to enjoy but are not able to do them anymore? current - reading, gardening, this discussion forum, photography, needlework, pets. Past - horseback riding. Sold horse just before leaving Texas, and don't have a place to keep one.

4. What's the status of your health? (do you have to take meds. for a chronic health condition?) Vitamin/mineral supplement, St. John's wort for winter blues
5. What is a typical day like for you? (how active are you?) Have prayers, drive teenager to high school, eat breakfast, wash clothes, dishes, catch up on what's going on at TAW, do general housework, eat lunch, sometimes pull weeds, sometimes get groceries, water plants, pick up teenager, cook dinner, eat dinner, sometimes take teenager to tae kwon do, clean up after dinner, sometimes take a walk, feed dogs, fish, have prayers.

6. Family status? (siblings, spouse, children?) Husband (26 years), two sons, 19 and 14.
7. Educational history? (you don't have to say where you went to school or anything, just whether or not you went somewhere, have a degree, etc.) Masters' in church music and education.

8. What is the greatest change/disappointment in life? Any regrets? Our oldest son was born with congenital heart defects, and later was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and depression. He isn't a disappointment, but a blessing (although often hard to handle :) ), but these things are limiting factors for him, and we have an ongoing struggle to help him find a way to stand on his own two feet in life.

Regrets? There are things I wish I hadn't done when I was young and foolish. I'm thankful that I didn't have to suffer serious consequences for them.

9. What are the most important things in your life? Christ and Church, family, friends.

10. What are your goals? Theosis, be a better wife, help my sons finish growing up, stay healthy enough to enjoy life.

11. What is your earliest memory? Being told I was getting a little brother, and being allowed to choose his middle name. He hasn't forgiven me. :D

12. List 5 words that describe young adults today. Intelligent, industrious, materialistic, irreverent, uncertain.

THANKS to anyone who is kind enough to participate!

PS: Please list your age!:D erm, 49.

That places three of us females in the same age category. Perhaps that is the average age at CF?

More surveys are needed from people outside the 46-60 age range, isn't that true?

Sure thing, GDE. :)

1. Where do you live and for how long? (I don't need your address or anything, just a general location, live alone or with someone, etc.)

Northern NJ, with my parents and sisters, 17 years as of tomorrow. :)

2. What is your current/past job or profession? ("past" means if you are no longer working or retired)

Student.

3. What activities/hobbies do you enjoy, or used to enjoy but are not able to do them anymore?

Writing, singing, reading...

4. What's the status of your health? (do you have to take meds. for a chronic health condition?)

My health could be better. I take glucophage for my insulin-resistance, which is related to my polycystic ovarian syndrome (I also sometimes-- when my doctor prescribes it-- take birth control to control my hormone levels and force my periods.) I also take allergy medicine. And vitamins, mostly because my immune system just sucks. I've been on a lot of other medicine in the past as well.

5. What is a typical day like for you? (how active are you?)

I go to school, come home, go online, read, do homework... etc. On the weekends I don't have much scheduled... it is the time for me to hang out with my non-school friends and to just relax. The main exception to this is church which I attend each Sunday.

6. Family status? (siblings, spouse, children?)

I live with my parents and my younger sister. My older sister is at college but I see her regularly. My extended family lives all over the country but I see them all at least once a year.

7. Educational history? (you don't have to say where you went to school or anything, just whether or not you went somewhere, have a degree, etc.)

Well, I am still in high school (a private preparatory school in northern new Jersey.)

8. What is the greatest change/disappointment in life? Any regrets?

The greatest change in my life would probably be my religious conversion. Second to that would be my choice to switch from public to private school in high school-- GOOD CHOICE. I can't think of my greatest disappointment. I have no real regrets about life choices.

9. What are the most important things in your life?

God, friends and family, in that order too, probably.

10. What are your goals?

I want to be a writer. I also want to do something "worthwhile" in my life, and do whatever I can to help people. I want to become closer to God.

11. What is your earliest memory?

When I was around two or so... it was at my daycare. We were all in the gym for some reason, driving around in little toy cars. Awww. Anyway there were just so many children in the room riding around in these little vehicles, including me.. and I remember pulling up to a teacher on the side and saying "Sure is a lot of traffic today!!!!!" She looked at me like I was crazy, haha.

I know, lame memory, but it is the first one I can recall.

12. List 5 words that describe young adults today.

Huh. Unhappy, cynical, sensitive, easily-distracted, searching.

Age: 17 tomorrow.

In IC XC,
Marjorie

Dear GDE

Have you tried the Friendship forum and the other forums for grandparents, etc?

They may have some elderly folks over 60 or over 70.

hmmm......I found the Golden Eagles forum for people over 50. Thing is, one of their forum rules is that you cannot post anything in there unless you are over 50. Crud!:help:

I just wanted to thank everyone again for your help! I just finished the work. I just have to pretty it up a little more, which I can do tomorrow morning.

I was just thinking that since some of you were so willing to share your life experiences, I may as well return the favor by answering these questions, too. Don't know if anyone wants to know that much about me, but I just thought it would make things fair by also giving some personal disclosure.

1. I live with my parents at present, moved back in with them about 3 yrs. ago (feels like 300 years ;) ). Before that I lived on my own in an appartment while going to school full time and working.

2. My only "job" at the moment is being a student. My work situation (or lack thereof) is a little too complicated for me to go into right now. I have a varied work history that includes AOD Counselor (alcohol and other drug), and miscellaneous health care jobs.

3. I like to read (prefer fiction, but I've been sticking with Orthodox related books for a while now), spend time here in TAW, surf the 'net, cooking, listening to music (all kinds!), playing a wooden recorder I bought at a pow-wow (only when no one else is around ;) ), gardening, and planning my future (which is pretty much a joke! A wise friend just told me "when man makes plans, God laughs."):D .

4. My health is not as great as it should be for someone my age. I need to exercise more (just need to figure out when and how!), and should be getting physical therapy for my back (all sorts of problems there, pinched nerves, arthritis, you name it....). I have a problem with my autoimmune system (it's been attacking my thyroid gland as though it's some kind of foreign invader for a few years now  ), but it's being managed at least somewhat with medication. Nothing life threatening.

5. Gosh.....a typical day for me....depends on if I have classes. If I do, I get up between 7:30 and 8:00 am, get coffee, see what's going on in the news world, check my e-mail and see what's going on in here, eat breakfast, take meds, shower, primp, and head out for classes by 10:30am. Return home anywhere between 6:00pm and and 10:30pm, depending on what day it is. On days I don't have classes, I get up at about the same time, do my usual morning stuff, and then at least pretend to study at various points throughout the day.

6. I'm still single (DUH! :P ), I have 3 older brothers. All 4 of us kids are between 31 and 39 yrs. of age. I have no children, as I am waiting for marriage before I begin that part of my life.

7. I've been in college forever. About 6 yrs. worth, and nothing to show for it yet.<sigh> Currently studying Nuclear Medicine.

8. Two things have changed my life dramatically: My first encounter with Christ at age 17 (making a "decision for Christ") and a job I took working for students with severe disabilities. The first one changed the way I saw myself, the second changed the way I saw the human race.

9. The most important things in my life are my relationship with God, the Church, family, friends, and my dogs.

10. My goals are to find a nice Orthodox man to marry, have children, and have a decent career. Also, of course, to be officially recieved into the Church by baptism/chrismation, and to continue to grow in theosis and learn to live a life of love.

11. Earliest memory? Laying on an examination table in the emergency room of a hospital, I think. I don't remember how old I was, but I think it was one of the times I ran through a glass storm door (I actually did that more than once!). I stillchave some fond memories of kindergarten, too.

12. 5 words that describe young adults today: Materialistic, uninvolved, unsatisfied, seeking (but no knowing what they're looking for), and friendly (had tothink of at least 1 good thing!).
